High Noon

Cerebus #294 (September 2003)
Art by Dave Sim & Gerhard
DAVE SIM:
(from the annotations to Cerebus Vol 16: The Last Day, June 2004)
Page 118  - High noon. For those of you keeping track, the sunlight has been moving through the room as the day goes along. See, when you're Gerhard, those are the kind of things that are going to make your stomach hurt a) because they're darned difficult to do and b) because no one notices. By way of emphasizing the point, I had Cerebus fall into his reverie about the music festival [on pages 116-117] on one side of the room and told Ger to have him awake from it on the other side of the room. If you compare the shadows on page 115 with the shadows on this page, that will tell you how long he was "gone" for.

There were many times, particularly during the last year, that Ger and I would ask each other why we bothered to make things that complicated. There really was no good answer, apart from We might as well and That's just how we are.

STUNNING. It's been ten years and the impact of what Dave Sim and Gerhard did artistically is still not close to being matched and I doubt it will be soon. When I first saw the image I thought it was a commission, but it is merely a page in a monthly comic book.

Amen to that brother.

"We might as well" and "That's just how we are." Yep, it was that mindset that made for THE best collaborative effort in the history of comics.
It's like James A. Owen said (and I paraphrase), not only does Dave do other people's characters, but he does them BETTER. Just take a look at Dave's Elephantmen effort, to take a recent example. (Find it in Elephantmen, volume 6, just out and with an intro by Dave.)
And, then, of course, Gerhard took the notion of backgrounds in comic panels and turned it on its head. No background artist will ever come close to his accomplishment.
