CEREBUS IN HELL? strip #1:

It's gratifying to know that the COMICS JOURNAL -- now celebrating THEIR 40th anniversary -- unbeknownst to them is a part of this historic moment (the moment, I mean. I think they're aware that it's their 40th anniversary): CEREBUS IN HELL? strip #1.

Although we wander in a different wilderness from Gary Groth and Co., forty years is forty years. May we all find our Comic-Book Promised Land and not have it turn out to be the shock-surprise EC twist ending of the century!

"Damian T. Lloyd" is an "A Moment of Cerebus" insider reference. We figured we needed one of those if we were going to launch CEREBUS IN HELL? here in Tim W.'s virtual living room without telling him ahead of time. Tim! We're going to need more ice!

NOW you're entering Max Ernst (UNE SEMAINE DE BONTE), Harvey Kurtzman (MAD, HELP), Norman Juster ("The Dot and the Line"), David Lynch ("The Angriest Dog in the World"), and digital comics (choose your favorite online comic using 'paste up' borrowed art) terrain, Dave. Very curious, seeing these two pages, the comics lineage you're tapping into with this project...

David Lynch's 'Angriest Dog In The World' was what first sprang to my mind too after seeing these. Looks like it's going to be a lot of fun (at Cerebus' expense!) Go Dave and Sandeep!

Agreed, Lee, but I also think immediately of David Malki's "Wondermark" (which I first saw in FLAK magazine and THE ONION, bought the collected book edition some years ago)—but for Dave's and my generation, it's Ernst and Kurtzman it brings immediately to mind!

I'll be sure to check those references out!

Hi Steve - Actually this all started with David Malki's WONDERMARK collection THE BEARDS OF OUR FOREFATHERS which (I think) Margaret sent to me. I had a weird flu over Christmas and I wanted something FUNNY!!! to read. Not funny or "funny". FUNNY!!! By the time I got to the cat with the online blog I was thinking "I need to do something like this."

And then when Dave Fisher was scanning the first box of my correspondence -- picked at random -- there was David Malki's first collection and a nice letter from him asking for a quote.

Didn't even remember it coming in!

I think of it as breaking down the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth walls simultaneously.

The NINTH Wall, Dave.

One per circle.

I mean, this IS the Inferno and all.

Actually after I knocked down the Sixth wall it turned out I was metaphysically coming in behind the toilet in the downstairs washroom at the Off-White House. Okay. That's far enough for me.

I'm sure Alan wouldn't have let that throw him.

I must say here somewhere that it's a high compliment indeed that Gerhard's labors over the decades match only the kind of "backgrounds" provided herein by the great Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré.

And that's all I've got to say about that.

After seeing the first two, I believe this is going to be an interesting ride!

Kirby used collages too, in his later Marvel work.
