You Don't Know... Jack!

CARSON GRUBAUGH:
Right when I thought I was getting an extended vacation from the world of Dave Sim...

...we decide to go ahead and do You Don't Know Jack! as a mini-series. Dave is churning out the gags at a rate only Dave can and I am slinging ink to produce the extra images we need as fast as I can manage.

My hope for the tones of the series, as stated to Dave is, "Like the best of Plato's dialogues, where no side of the argument wins, but short and funny." I intervene any time a gag is too one sided. Jack has final say on everything. A fine line, but one I think is worth toeing.

Here is a bit of script that Dave added on to the end of a story that I felt needed better back and forth. The lead in is a discussion about having sex with women on their periods.

As with SDOAR I will post scans of all my art as it is finished over at Dave's Patreon page. A donation of as little as $1 a month will buy you access and help us keep going.

Originally serialised within the pages of the self-published Glamourpuss #1-26 (2008 to 2012), The Strange Death Of Alex Raymond is an as yet uncompleted work-in-progress in which Dave Sim investigates the history of photorealism in comics and specifically focuses on the work of comic-strip artist Alex Raymond and the circumstances of his death on 6 September 1956 at the wheel of fellow artist Stan Drake's Corvette at the age of 46.

Carson,

Some feedback on Sunday morning before a cup of coffee:

---I'm glad to see more Dave Sim work out there while waiting for The Strange Death of Alex Raymond so I'm glad you all are doing this.

---Does that say "Two-Fisted Store manager?" If so, I like that, it's funny.

---What is the shape saying "Grrrr."?

---Commentary on the unrealistic female feels a bit flat (no pun intended).

---The Hand of the Patriarchy is funny. I don't know why it's funny but it is. Especially having it in a circle right underneath. And the clapping. There's something funny about a static reoccurring image. I've a feeling you're going to get a lot of good jokes out of that thing (not a reference to the Addams family).

---The dialogue at the end is alright, I liked the "star field" line.

---I realize this hasn't been the most encouraging bit of feedback so I'll stop with this: I'm excited for a new Dave Sim (and collaborators) project and think something good will emerge from the chemistry between "the spirit of Dave Sim", Carson and Jack. This feels like watching a band tuning up or having a soundcheck. I think unexpected, unplanned ideas will happen and work to make something funny, interesting and perhaps thoughtful, too.

You're a talented artist Carson, and I'm interested in this going forward. If something else occurs to me I'll post it.

---Good luck!

Dictionary Lad here: "INCLUVISE"?

Or, maybe Dave did that on purpose, since I missed his annual birthday call on Saturday...just him throwing me a bone.
