Glad you got a scan of this. I had seen it back when I got this issue, and let Tim know, but didn't have a scanner to get an image of it myself. I still have to read this one, and hope it's not another 4 years until the next issue (assuming there is one).

Also, I need to find a copy of issue 2, as apparently that got missed when it came out back whenever it came out.

SPOILERS FOR BONE

I'd followed Bone for a while, then lost track before eventually picking up the One Volume excited to see how the whole story ended. It was disappointing, the tale going from a charming comedy with some fantasy elements and an interesting villain in the Hooded One to a generic fantasy.

I preferred Grand'ma Ben when she was this super-strong & fast farmer, not some secret nobility. For my taste, I'd have preferred the story to remain on a smaller scale, not culminating in some big end of the kingdom/world conflict but one involving the village that the readers slowly got to know and care about.

Anyway, Bone was a disappointment despite the high quality art.

This arm wrestling match is fun though, using the Jaka Distraction was clever by Ryan and Simpson.

Though not that I think about it, I wonder if it's a reference to Dave challenging Jeff Smith to a boxing match; if that's the case, it leaves a bit of a sour taste.

But maybe it was just a random idea by these artists, I'd prefer to think it some innocent fun versus some kind of insult but who knows?

Agreed on Bone, AFN. Of course, I can't complain too much, as I got my copy of the all in one volume for a quarter. Yes, really. (It was a library's copy, and the spine is cracked about a third of the way into the book. All the pages are there, though, so I don't care.)

As to this page, I think it might be a sly reference to the boxing match challenge. However, on another page, there is an editor's note with a url for the Petition. So make of that what you will.

If it is a sly reference, then it's interesting to me that Bone wins by basically lying to Cerebus, considering the origin of the boxing challenge was because Dave said Jeff lied. Mr. Sim, as far as I can tell, has an excellent reputation for being honest.

Yeah, that's another reason it reads (heh) to me as a winking reference to it, that Bone has to lie to overpower the reigning aardvark.

If you will.

Quarter well spent.

For my part, not only did the One Volume's size make reading awkward, but the art had been shrunk down to fit it all in. The Cerebus books are a good example of fitting in a lot of story with an easy to read format, the soft covers help with that as well.
