And if you're looking for Dave's Stuff, search for "Cerebus Archive

And if you have any left afterward...

Anyway,
Heeeeeere's Dave:

CerebusDownloads.com is where Dave wants the money. (But you can't donate $0.77, or $7.77, or $77.70). So just donate $7, or $10 (which is what I did (I suppose you COULD donate $7.77 at the Patreon site...) and call it a day...)

Next Time: I'll not work a 16 hour shift so I don't have to try to do this on my phone...

Or, you could just check the Youtube stats on number of times the video has been watched....

David beat me to it. Once again Dave "You Kids Get Off My Lawn" Sim is stymied by modern communications...

@David Birdsong....

Do a $1 donation 7 times in the quantity field.

that's what everyone else is doing.

But that won't give $7.77, so it won't count. See, I was paying attention!

Jake said...

I watch them. But sometimes I miss a few, and play catch up.

Jeff said...

I called Dave and left a message that people could not donate the way he specified, but that he should look for people who donate sequential $1 bids seven times in a row. So, he should recognize those when he looks--presumably next Tuesday or Wednesday.

What if I donated a 5 and two 1's. Nyuck. Nyuck.

Glen said...

I watched them on a regular basis but I get the feeling that no matter how many people donate Dave has already decided he doesn't want to do these video updates anymore.

Life goes on.

Remember Dave's promise to to make public appearances again if he reached a certain number of signatures on his petition?

How did that go?

I already donate monthly to the Patreon site. Asking people who watch the update to donate will not give an accurate number for who watches it regularly. I watch it every week. Some people who watch won't have Paypal. Some people simply won't pay to make it known that they watch the update. Dominick has the right idea. Just watch it on You Tube and click the like button and count up the views and/or 'likes' at the end of the week.

David,

I faxed Dave about all this, and suggested that he could just fax an update and I'd run it.

Haven't heard back yet, but I'll keep everybody posted.

There's no way this will turn out meaningful in any sense other than justifying Dave to do what Dave wants to do - in which case, hey, Dave, just do it anyway, it's all good.

Maybe I feel that paying over the odds as I have to do as a UK buyer for each issue of CiH is enough of a support, without chucking another $7 (plus the exchange rate fee I'd be charged) to meet some arbitrary criteria of support, which doesn't make any sense anyway.

Seems like just a petulant way to find a reason to stop doing the videos.

Hmm. I think most of you have guaged this fairly accurately, in that Dave may be getting tired of his weekly Wednesdays being taken up by thinking of something interesting/entertaining to record, and then recording it (which takes up, probably, at least a couple of hours out of his workday). And, clearly, SDOAR is priority #1.

BUT. After ten years of regular correspondence with Dave, I think that I can say with a great deal of certitude that the man is never at a loss for words. He very much likes to make sure that his points are stated, for the record, and with (as best he can) the exact mots juste.

So, David Birdsong, I strongly suspect that, if Dave were to make just bi-weekly or monthly Weekly Updates, then the lengths of each would increase to fill the void, so to speak.

If he wants to quit, so be it. BUT:

He'll be baa-aack.

Anonymous,

What's the email address?

We can cut out the middle man and just donate the $.77, $7.77 or what have you.

Like Jeff said, I think it’s because Dave’s been going full on pedal to the medal, working relentlessly on SDOAR, (researching, mocking up, and even drawing pages as much as his hand will let him. And let’s be honest, knowing him, he’s probably overworking the hand more then he should be), in addition to working on CIH?, that he may be looking to see what the most valuable and productive use of his time is, and which avenues he’s best off putting in time and effort on in order to keep everything going. And this probably seemed like a reasonable way to him to gauge if the weekly updates were a valuable and worthwhile use of his time. Again, remember, he isn’t tech savvy. And I’m not sure if the Youtube channel would reflect the number of views on AMOC for the weekly updates.

I have to admit, it looks like his method of gauging viewership and comments on the future of the Weekly Updates seems to have provoked the largest response to a weekly update for the shortest amount of airtime in quite a while (ever?). Wannabe Youtube Stars take notice!

I'd like to see a completed SDAOR to Dave's satisfaction with 100% Sim art or as close to that as possible; if it means less updates that's fine with me. It doesn't have to be an either/or but if it is, better to have a completed SDAOR than a bunch short update videos, catchy jingles or no.

I concur with our Faker; I really, really want to read "Strange Death." That's way more important to me that seeing 15 minutes of Dave talking...unless he can get Raoul to say "Yeah!" again.

George Peter Gatsis It's where the payment goes when you use the $1/$5/$10 donate buttons, check your own payment receipt in your paypal account history after donating $1 to verify. The paypal account is set to have the same email address for support and payment, the email receipt paypal will send you shows the support email, paypal history for the sent payment also shows the actual 'sent to' email (and paypal can't magically divert it to a different account). The paypal account can have many different email address to receive payment in the one account (I had 3 or 4 on mine at one stage), this is the one set up for the $1 donation button.

You are correct!

I had been in this for SOOOO long... I forgot what awesomeness I am for setting it up in the first place.

GIVE ME YOUR MONEY!!!! ARRRGGGHHH!!!!

I usually download "Dave's Weekly Update" and watch it on 1.5x speed so it doesn't take up so much of my time, but not necessarily on Friday. I'm not gonna donate to this, though.

And David B., I admire your ESP! Not only do you know there are lurkers, but you know their motivations! Such wow!

Tony again said...

I don't know how to do that, Damian, and don't care to take the time to learn - but I bet it makes Dave sound a little like Alvin the Chipmunk, which is probably worth the effort.

Damian T. Lloyd, Esq. said...

Tony: Ha! I hadn't thought of that. The app I use changes only the speed, not the pitch (wonderful what we can do these days!), but that would be pretty funny. I watch a lot of tutorials and video essays and such, so as I said the practice has really saved me some time.

Eddie, you said, "I’m not sure if the Youtube channel would reflect the number of views on AMOC for the weekly updates." Yes, the count reflects that. It counts all views. Now just ask what counts as a "view" ...

The "Dave's Weekly Update" videos aren't as valuable as the period when Dave was personally commenting on the blog -- both from a marketing and an entertainment perspective. Tim W. would know (and might be willing to confirm or deny, if I may please ask?) that the number of visitors to the blog was higher when Dave was active than afterward. Certainly the activity in the comments decreased. It seems that what Dave's (and anyone's) fans value is engagement with the author.

So if I'm right about that, and if Glen, David, and Jeff are right that Dave doesn't want to do the weekly videos any more, perhaps he might do a Friday "Dave's Weekly Comments". I am surprised that these videos take a long time to make, but Dave's methods are his own to choose. But if he took an equivalent (or even reduced) period of time on a Friday to live-comment on the blog, that might be a draw for an audience. Dave might accept it as being like the old "Yahoo Chat" thingies.

The format could be various (or even varied). If Dave doesn't want to do a commenting session, it could be something else. We readers could nominate questions on Monday, select them on Wednesday, Dave could jot down a quick answer on Thursday, and it goes up on AMoC on Friday. Dave doesn't have to spend time and effort coming up with a topic each week; we get to explore areas of Dave's comics or other work; Dave saves some time on the update (quick answers, Dave!).

Jeff said that Dave "is never at a loss for words" -- or, put another way, really likes to run his mouth. (I'm sure both people who eventually read Dave 'n' Jeff's correspondence will find a diamond or two in there -- some further clarification of Dave's "thoughts".) He often comes across as not addressing his correspondent, but speaking for posterity -- "reading into the record" as he puts it (does he really think there's a "record" that he can read into? Like, Societal Hansard or something?). Dave has always preferred a one-way communication. So "Dave's Weekly Question" might suit him.

Maybe Dave could borrow DC's "hardcover / softcover" strategy from The New Teen Titans in the '80s, and give the video updates to his Patreons a week before the public YouTube release. That might drive (paying!) traffic to Dave's Patreon, and he needs the money.

Or if Dave feels that he is spending too much time on these videos, he could simply reduce the frequency of them. Would "Dave's Monthly Update" be significantly less of a draw than "Dave's Weekly Update"? Even if he spends twice as long on a "Monthly Update" as on a "Weekly Update" (and Dave is always good about giving value for money), he's still saving 50 percent of the total production time.

I maintain that the best use of Dave's time is not appearing on this blog or writing letters to Jeff (as Dave once said, "You don't owe your fans a correspondence of Victorian proportions; you owe them the next issue of your comic,") or even doing Cerebus In Hell, but producing pages for The Strange Death of Alex Raymond.

The problems are he's so slow, and he keeps going into all these digressions! It's like Barry Windsor-Smith's Robin Hood -- "I was spending a couple of pages on a point that could have been addressed in a panel." Hurry up, Dave! We wanna see it! (Lord, give me patience, but soon!)
