Openmindedness (Dave's Weekly Update #251)

Hi, Everybody!

Friend to the Blog and guy who's looking for some moola (so, ya know, maybe give him some?), Steve Peters is doing a Kickstarter to restore his Rabbit Hell Digest books, (which celebrated it's 27th anniversary on August 17th.) The first one was issues 1 and 2. Now he's doing 3 and 4.

What's that got to do with the Weekly Update? Nothing, but I wanted some "good" news before I watch this.

Heeeeeere's Dave:

Well, gee, I thought I was gonna get my butt chewed out.

Alright, Comics Link. September the Thirteenth (so, like six days from now) (Nothing is up yet, but because you've been such GOOD boys and girls (okay, you've been horrible little shits, but the meds just kicked in so I DON'T CARE!!!!), here's some previews:

Now when I post the images for this blog, I make 'em 640 pixels wide. The originals of these are 14640 pixels wide. If anybody wants copies of the ORIGINAL UNALTERED BIG AS F@#$ scans, large envelopes of unmarked bills would help to loosen my grip on them...)

Also, Dave wants this by his name on the blog:
So, um... here ya go.

Next Time: Back into the SHITSTORM!!! F@#$ my life...

Ok, I haven't read every piece of scholarship or review or message board comment about Ditko, but I've read a lot and I don't recall "Nazi" ever, EVER being applied to him or his work, nor can I recall seeing anything in his work that would invite that comparison. It's certainly not common, if so. Nothing turns up in a quick Google search of "Steve Ditko Nazi" besides works depicting Nazi soldiers as villains in commercial comics.

I have seen "fascist" used occasionally to describe his work, but that's an unfair overreaction (IMHO) to his objectivist philosophy on display in those works. I find that work interesting, not always appealing, but not "fascist" and certainly not anti-semitic. In any case, despite the overuse/misuse of "Nazi" to describe severely mean or cruel people, e.g. "Soup Nazi", I still can't recall any use of the word in that abused sense to Ditko or his work. So I guess I'm saying Dave needs to cite his evidence on that one.

Dave may be stinging still, and rightly so, from the way the Comics Journal & Jeff Wong portrayed him as a Nazi in their teardown of #186, and thus could be projecting his perception of similar criticism onto his fellow pariah-king (but not really) of comics.

Also, unless Dave has other Ditko correspondence regarding his work in glamourpuss (which, sadly, we'll never read, if so) then I speculate that Ditko's silent open-mindedness about Ms. A might have been due to close-bookedness and disinterest. I'd like to think he might have read gp for its comics strip-illustration history & commentary, but I assume Dave's approach to tracing those strips to re-present them would, for Ditko, be a put-off, and the fashion model stuff to be completely beneath notice.

So synchronistic - comic art metaphysics? - that Dave should feature Ditko this week, as Ditko - whose work I absolutely love, love, love - was the first name I thought of when Carson and others were talking about how we can all read and enjoy work by creators whose ideology we disagree with. I mean, I'm about as far as Libertarian as you can get; FDR New Deal liberal on economics, Christian conservative on social issues. Yet something about Ditko's post-Marvel work is so pure, so thrilling in its conviction, that it makes me want to stand up and cheer for something I don't even believe in. Now THAT'S art!

The best plate in this auction, by far, is Ms. A's tattoo, by the way.

As far FROM Libertarian. Don't post after 2 beers, folks.

Who called Steve Ditko a Nazi? I'd like to see that claim supported as well.

Matt,

Can you tell me if any of the "Comicsgate For Dummies" material you've collected was sent to Dave before he shot this video? Or the reader responses to Van Sciver's announcement?

It just seems odd to me that Dave failed again to answer our questions, but took the opportunity to lecture us about "real" open-mindedness, while at the same time he launches an auction of his original art that would likely appeal more than any other art in his archives to the average comicsgate enthusiast who has just recently heard of Dave Sim, the number of which likely dwarfs us regular old run-of-the-mill fans.

It's just more fuel for the fire that is my suspicion that Dave's willing to play ignorant re comicsgate for as long as it's possible in order to capitalize on a new and possibly temporary revenue stream.

Or maybe I'm just starting to see connections where there aren't any. Call it "Comic Book Opportunism Conspiracy Theory Metaphysics."

Ah, well, Matt. At least you didn't get your ass chewed.

Isn't anyone going to comment on the oh-so-obvious eleph ... er, penis ... in the room?

...leave it to Jeff to draw attention to the penis...

My previous comment had an internet girth of 6.5 inches, which savvy AMOC readers will realize was my recognition of the elephantine penis in the room.
