This stuff is so far & away better than CIH? I miss getting this monthly, and every few months re-reading the current story so far. The comics parody plays so much better in the service of the greater story than when it's almost the only point of the gags.

I think CiH was always intended to be a trifle -- a cash-grab from the fans to fund the Cerebus digital-restoration project. Dave, bless 'im, always wants to give the fans something for their money (eg. the backup stories in Swords), so he spends some time and some effort on it. It's not to my taste (let us say ...), but not everything has to be for me.

I was discussing this period of comics just the other day, and opining that we have to remember how fresh things like Miller doing Dark Knight and Moore & Bolland doing The Killing Joke. They begat the whole grim 'n' gritty trend that still dominates today.

To that I'll add here that it was a shriek-of-laughter moment to see Dave right there on the scene, mocking it before the paint was dry. "Mustn't. Black. Out," -- hee hee hee!

OK, but let's be honest; Frank Miller's "Batman" stuff does a pretty good job of mocking itself.

And I think one could argue that "Grim 'n' Gritty Batman" was relaunched in the early 70s, in reaction to the campy Adam West version; Frank just cranked it up to 11. Of course that just out it in "so grim it's campy" territory.
