VARK WARS: CYAN HARVEST

Benjamin Hobbs:

If you haven't heard, VARK WARS is available to order from Diamond NOW! Make sure to let you LCS know you want a copy!

The original version of this cover had Jingles, WOB, Dante, Virgil and Francis in Black and White:

One of Dave's notes for the cover was: "Don't forget that Dante, Virgil, Jingles, WOB and Francis need to be CYAN colour holds instead of BLACK so Batvark stands out."

David tried a CYAN colour hold...and it didn't look right. We think the blue glow radiating from within the figures looks MUCH better.

It looks awesome! You guys really make it feel like a Star Wars cover without there being anything Star Wars in there at all. The blue from within makes them look like Force Ghosts. Very clever.

Hyphen should go between "infernal" and "realms", not between "realms" and "fantasy". What say you, Jeff S.?

Well, but I'm pretty sure the original cover to Marvel's Star Wars #1 read "...space-fantasy" in the top banner. (I bought it when it came out...must've been stolen when I was burglarized in '89. I can't imagine I would've sold it.)

Damian T. Lloyd, Esq. said...

Tony D.: It did -- and "space-fantasy" is grammatically correct. As is "infernal-realms fantasy". But not "infernal realms-fantasy".

The hyphen on the original cover is grammatically correct. The hyphen on the CiH cover is not. To parallel the original, it should be between "infernal" and "realms", turning the two words into a compound adjective.

Ah, Tony, you used a hyphen instead of a comma!

Amazingly, in an exceedingly rare event, I agree with Damian on principle, but I can see why aping the original cover is important.

If aping the original cover is important, then "infernal realms" is one word too long.

P.S. I'm sure BS there thinks he's made some sort of point, but I must admit I'm failing to see the comparison. Has Dave died recently?

Jeff said...

No, Damian, because "infernal" is the long-accepted modifier to "realms", as is "Heavenly". Furthermore, last I checked, "infernal" is an adjective, and not a noun. "Realms" is vague, thus requiring the modifier.

Unless you mean that it should be "infernal-realms" (which is not exactly *one* word), in which case, "Nevermind!" 🤗

No, Jeff, because you said that "aping the original is important". You and I both agree that CiH is not aping the grammatical correctness of the original. So it must be aping the physical position of the hyphen in the sentence (a dumb thing to do that makes the comic look as if it were assembled by illiterates, but hey -- if that's what they want to show the public, that's their right). As such, the adjective needs to be one word, not two.

Or they could make it grammatically correct and use "infernal-realms fantasy", as you have twice now admitted. (Nobody except you ever said anything about "infernal" and "realms" being one word; you made that up out of your head for reasons of your own.)

If they really want to parody the original precisely, the tagline should read something like "The greatest infernal realms-fantasy comic of all!", with "comic" substituting for "film" as the noun in the original and "infernal realms" and "fantasy" as the compound adjective joined by a hyphen.

Thanks for playing!

Wow, this is the longest "down-the-rabbit-hole" pointless thread to appear on AMOC for quite some time. Keep going, guys!

Damian T. Lloyd, Esq. said...

Thanks, Tony! You should have put a comma after "down-the-rabbit-hole", and I'm not even sure the quotation marks were necessary, as you used hyphens to construct the compound adverb.

Damian, you rock - pedantically, speaking. Hyphen-placing, is not my strong-suit.

As for using "quotation marks," what can I say - I'm a "huge Kirby fan."

All of you guys need to start putting punctuation marks inside of your close quotes unless you’re going to adopt British grammar/spelling across the board.

Damian T. Lloyd, Esq. said...

All of us guys who are Canadian properly use the punctuation in the British manner.

Damian, a quick web search seems to indicate that Canadians use punctuation in the American manner (the “Globe and Mail” appears to do so, for example). Also, wouldn’t you use single quotes if you were going by limey rules? I’ll admit that I’m not very familiar with your exotic land and strange ways, so apologies if I’m missing something here.

Canadians know that The Glib and Stale is not a reputable newspaper, but a propaganda organ for the Conservative Party. It has been since the death of Israel Asper.

Can you point me to something that confirms Canadians place commas and periods outside of quotation marks? I’m a copy editor and may need to know this in the future.

This is the first thing my Google search turned up (from https://proofreadingpal.com/proofreading-pulse/proofreading-and-editing/rules-of-canadian-english/):

The best news for American proofreaders is that Canadian punctuation works the same as American. Two quotation marks outside the comma and period, a period after abbreviations like “Dr.’ and Mrs.,” and a comma before the conjunction joining two independent clauses. So that’s a relief, eh?

Damian T. Lloyd, Esq. said...

Oh, I see! I think you have mistaken this for a serious thread. Proofread however you think best!

Man, for a minute I thought Jack and Damian were talking about something I wrote.

Whew... that's a load off my mind.
