A Hell of a Gardener

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

In February of 2018 we saw pages 26 and 28 from Dave Sim's ninth notebook. That notebook covers Cerebus #80 through 86 and those pages covered the bit from Cerebus #83 wherein the Countess teaches Cerebus how to use a dustpan.

So what does page 27 show us? It has small sketches of 2 pages leading up to that joke and the first page where that dialogue begins.

Off topic, but I've noticed in the last couple of Kickstarter e-mails that the great Peter Hook, formerly of Joy Division (maker of one of the best rock albums ever made, Closer) and New Order, is a fan. He's my second-favorite bass player, after the late Chris Squire (of Yes).
I just think that's totally cool and everything.

Hey, Tony. I saw that too. I had no idea Hooky was even a comic book fan, let alone a Cerebus fan - really cool. He's my second favourite bass player too, after Jah Wobble (PiL, Invaders Of The Heart).
