Today is Dave Sim's 64th Birthday!!

Legendary Colleen Doran says Dave Sim "... broke the million dollar self publishing barrier breaking the comic distribution supply chain with his GN back in the 1980's. For those who don't know."
https://twitter.com/ColleenDoran/status/1259549454048378886
adding: "He's one of the most innovative layout/designers in comics history, IMHO."
https://twitter.com/ColleenDoran/status/1259648545650548739

From humble beginnings.
Me and Max Southall of "Cerebus TV" fame still stay in touch periodically. The picture of Dave Sim near the top of the page of his current Cerebus Kickstarter campaign was taken by Max a year before Cerebus #1.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/brianjones/cerebus-the-aardvark-no1

Max goes way back with Dave Sim and we corresponded a bit last week and he said I could reshare here for those who enjoy "Cerebus Archive" kinda stuff.
So before there were comic book stores ("Captain George" Henderson did already have his Memory Lane in Mirvish Village in Toronto, opposite the iconic Honest Ed's emporium, where he sold Golden Age and Silver Age back issues, but no current comics) Max came up with the idea that he, Dave Sim and Harry Kremer would buy the comics directly from the distributor "Kitchener News", before the comics hit the newstands. Weekly Max drove them as he was the only one with a car and while he and Dave bought for their own supply "...Harry had just gotten laid off from the chocolate factory closing down, and decided to make a business out of his comic collecting around that time, like the infamous Howard Rogofsky. Quite a few of us had all been friends and collectors at the time. We promised to help Harry." Harry, of course, would become the founder of Now and Then Books, the oldest comic store in North America - making good use of their comic book buying experiences when he became a distributor himself. A way of doing business that would spread to all the specialty comics stores to come. This predated Cerebus by some years.
And Max still has the same car they drove, which he also used driving when he lived here in Los Angeles, but is now with him in Oregon.
The other day we continued our talk where Max shares the story on the above picture: I was a cub reporter for the local paper (like Jimmy Olson?) The Kitchener-Waterloo Record, and I decided to promote him around the time of Dave Sim's The Beavers comic strip development which characters also appeared in Harry's Oktoberfest comic book, drawn by Dave. I touted the strip to the editor, and Dave later made a deal with them to publish the strip. That's the origin of the photo.

Legendary Steve Lafler is backing the new Cerebus kickstarter saying Dave Sim "...inspired me to become a publisher in 1981 and showed the way to a generation of cartoonists. Thank you Dave."

Cerebus film done Disney or Bakshi guerrilla style?

We've tested the waters with our work-in-progress guerrilla efforts (if we play our cards right we may get Britney Spears to sing a song in it!:))

Here's from a big comic artist and Cerebus fan:
what a joy to watch! I suspect its still a wip as there are a couple audio cues missing and I saw some unfinished animation, but what a joy to see. The lighting was fantastic! this is a great work, sir! Thanks for sharing!

Cerebus fan:
The video looks so real. You have done a great job on both videos (tried two versions) and animation of the video looks great. Great job!!

Another Cerebus fan:
The sound is uneven, too loud then too quiet, but I assume there will be a final sound mix? As a Cerebus fan it is fun to see some of the scenes come to life the way they do. Elrod is really great, he sounds almost exactly like I hear him in my head. The effort is outstanding. I thought it was fun and obviously done with respect to the original story. Thanks for sharing it.

And yet another Cerebus fan:
Watching The Fractured Destiny of Cerebus was an enjoyable experience. The delivery and animation of Elrod works well. There were definitely some laughs to be had there. The bit were Cerebus becomes 2D was a great moment as well!

You were magnificent! (And btw nothing against Britney - if anything that whole thing with Bone might play differently in today's climate. In any case looking forward to the upcoming series on Netflix.)
