Cerebus Archive Portfolios/Waverly Press Cerebus Offerings

Hi, Everybody!

So, I got an email for Dave from Dan Eckhart:
It seems like you are involved in some way with the Kickstarters. I have come (very) late to the game and missed out on everything. Is there a way for me to acquire these portfolios with the money going to Dave? Or do I just have to give my money to the comics speculators on eBay? I’m not a “comic book person”, but I’ve got money and I want to do what’s right by him.

Dan
P.S. If you’re the right person with whom to communicate, I’ve got more questions and some ideas of my own.
P.P.S. Your blog inspired me to start my own yesterday.

I sent it up to Dave, and he responded thusly:

This is how the Kickstarter versions look.

This is how the Diamond versions look.

Speaking of the Waverly Press, limited overflow of the rewards are available at cerebusoverload.com. Including the two new trading cards:
This is a preview for High Society: The Regency Edition, free with any purchase. (Also, Card #8)

This is Card #9, printed on heavy-weight 18pt. uncoated card stock. Suitable for just about any kind of pencil, ink or watercolor. You get 5 cards for $10

They're running a 15% discount on anything ordered thru tomorrow night: Code is "Cerebus15"

And in preparation for High Society: The Regency Edition (coming before the end of the year, details are being finalized, as soon as I'm told to tell you guys, I'll tell you guys.), there's a CONTEST:
Funniest quote from High Society. Limited to TWENTY-FIVE (25) words OR LESS
One entry per person.
Email your entry to momentofcerebus@gmail.com
Put "High Society Regency Contest" in the subject line.
Two (2) winners will each receive a secret gift bundle and Dave will incorporate the quotes into two new illustrations that will be utilized in the 40th anniversary campaign.
Contest ends in three (3) weeks (so, on September 12th.)
And anybody that enters gets a special surprise from the Waverly Press
So get your shiny metal thinking helmets on...
______________
Speaking of You Don't Know Jack, there's an Indiegogo. So go go Indy.
______________
Since nobody mentioned "Merch":Cerebus masks and whatnots with all the money going to Dave. Until the end of the month, there's also "Cerebus in Hell? 4 Sell". With all the profits going to Aardvark-Vanaheim. Speaking of Cerebus in Hell? There's a new one: Spider-Whore! And this Wednesday, The Amicable Spider-Vark should be in stores, which is the lead in to Spider-Whore, which was SUPPOSED to be the immediate sequel, but Batvark: PENIS ended up taking Spider-Whore's slot when COVID-19 threw everything up into the air.

Speaking of Spider-Vark, A Moment of Cerebus is facilitating Aardvark/Vanaheim's auctioning of a signed copy of the mis-stapled The Amicable Spider-Vark #1. As soon as I get pictures, I'll show you what it looks like, but it's signed by Dave with a silver sharpie that was dying. It's a "Atwall 1 of 5". Bidding is at $30 American dollars (plus shipping) to Jeff Seiler.

And Signed copies of Vark Wars: Walt's Empire Strikes Back (Signed by Dave, Signed by Dave and me, Signed by me after I scribble out Dave's name, Pretty much available Signed only...)
__________________________
But getting back to the Portfolios, I have the first seven (I was broke during number eight), and can attest that the packaging is pretty top notch. I've no complaints.

If you want to take Dave up on his offer (if you missed any/all of them,) you can email me at momentofcerebus@gmail.com, or contact Dave directly P.O.Box 1674 Station 'C', Kitchener, Ontario Canada N2G 4R2, and we'll/he'll work something out.

Next Time: Oliver and the Links (Say, what was the name of the record label that produced their albums?)

In case I didn't make it clear, DAVE SIM is judging the High Society contest.

Having two of each of the portfolios, I can certainly attest to the invulnerability of the shipping packaging. Hell, the first one took me 20 minutes to open (learning curve).

Aw, come on Jeff. Ya shoulda let Larry have this one. Yer number is 301.

One aspect of these CAN portfolios I'm curious about is Dave's commentaries on each of the pages included. What do people who've read them make of these? How much new information and/or insight would they offer for someone like me who's already familiar with AMOC, the Swords essays, Dave's various press interviews and the prose pages of Cerebus 1-300?

Thanks.

Hi Paul,
Having all the CANs and read the all the commentaries,Dave have provided from his memory what he was thinking when creating that individual page or a sequence of pages. So yeah, they're a lot different from what he has written in the past.

I second Michael's take. I found little to no repetition in the CAN commentaries, but there is some interesting back story, both from comics history (and I love reading Dave's take on comics history) and from his own personal and professional history.
Caveat: I did stop reading "the stuff in the back of the book" sometime before "Tangent" ended.

It’s also possible that the later/newer stuff doesn’t sell as well as the old stuff is because there is little to no advertising outside of this site for the CANs, or the SDOAR fundraising edition, etc. I happened to luck out and spot them in the short window they were offered and managed to get orders in for it, but if you’re someone who’s lapsed even more on keeping up with this site than I have, there’s no way to know when things are coming out. Didn’t CAN8 come out a couple years after CAN7? That might explain the low orders as much as anything else — no regular schedule.
Anyway, I try to purchase all the latest Dave Sim/Cerebus stuff, even if I don’t manage to get around to reading it right away. Or to reviewing it over at the Atomic Junk Shop (hopefully this will change in the near future).
Is that High Society Regency Edition you mention in re the contest the one we ordered from Diamond Previews earlier in the year and that had the Red/Blue/whatever bookplates?
Where are we on the remastered editions of the phone books, either? Is it most of the second half that hasn’t been released yet? I think we got Reads, but have any of the rest of the second half books been remastered yet?
Anyway, just my two cents on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Hope everyone is doing well!

Oops, just realized the remastered books are on the side. Have we gotten two remastered versions of book 1 and/or any other books?

Travis: I'm trying to share more posts on the Cerebus Facebook group, and Brian West shares stuff on the Tweeters. And even though he throws more shade than the Golden Age Flash villain, Dick Johnston posts about Dave on Bleeding Cool. (Of course, I keep hearing how Bleeding Cool is an unreadable mess, what with all the Pop-up ads...) So the information is out there, but with five thousand other fandoms promoting their new stuff, it's a signal loss issue.

The Regency Edition is a new limited High End printing from The Waverly Press, with all sorts of bells and whistles, it's less a new printing, and more of an object de Art.

I believe the first volume has been printed twice since the Remastering, and High Society's 12th printing was the most recent one you mentioned, which is the second printing of the Remastered version.

Isn't The Regency Edition supposed to be hardcover?

Travis, I have proofread nine volumes, three of which are from the second half, one of which has been remastered (Reads). Going Home and Form & Void have not been, though I proofed them. IIRC, Dave told me that he thought that F&V might be the next one, based on Diamond numbers of "books in inventory" ( my term). So, yes, seven books to go.

Jeff said...

Check me. Eight books to go. Melmoth has not been proofread by me or remastered.

Tony again said...

"Going Home" has definitely been remastered - I have it!

Hi, Travis! Manly is correct. You can drop by my feed anytime at https://www.twitter.com/bigbwest to receive the latest news. I try my best to disseminate items of interests for fans of AARDVARK-VANAHEIM and A Moment of Cerebus.

Ya know, Tone, as I age and since it's been quite a while since I proofed a book of the little, grey, bastard's adventures, it's easy to forget.

Plus, my home office filing system/cloud consists, primarily, of Post-it Notes taped to the wall within easy reach of my home-office desk. Which is my Laz-y Boy recliner, a metal clipboard, and a cat (make that two) who won't leave me alone when I'm scribbling.

Ergo, caveat empty. Or, something like that. The Romans said that. You could, as the great philosopher, Yogi, once said, "look it up."

P.S.: It just occurred to me: (Continuity [or, Sim] warning), Dave repeatly called Cerebus a bastard, but he also showed Cerebus growing up (in Going Home, I think) as the child of a married (I presume) couple.

But, of course, family (or Family, or "family") dynamics being what they are, he may have actually been, literally, a bastard.

By definition, I am a bastard, as is my twin ba--, er, brother. From when we were conceived (out of wedlock) and, then, adopted.

But, there's more to Cerebus being a bastard, I'm sure, and I'm too lazy and tired to look it up tonight.

Okay, guys, have fun with this comment.
