Dave's Calling who's got questions?

Hi, Everybody!

Dave's calling me on Thursday (I thought the first Thursday of October was NEXT week.)
If Roy Lichtenstein can rip off comic art, then David Birdsong can rip off Lichtenstein...

So anybody got any questions?

Maybe your Fundraising Edition of The Strange Death of Alex Raymond raised New and Interesting questions...

Maybe your Remastered Cerebus #1 raised New and Interesting questions (like what kind of socks Dave was wearing while he drew it in 1977...)

Maybe you've been traumatized by Batvark: PENIS and demand satisfaction. (Also, you're a 19th century Southern Gentleman?)

Anything?

Just comment here, or email momentofcerebus@gmail.com

ITEM: Update from Carson and Sean on the Kickstarter for Dave and Carson Grubaugh's You Don't Know Jack, (which has an Indiegogo, still):
Hello friends of Jack! I come to you today with a grave message.

Ten percent of you have still not filled out your surveys!

Without the data on your survey (i.e. your address!) we will have no way to get you your pledge rewards. Carson will box them up, write your backer name on them, and then they will sit under his desk, sadly, forlorn, collecting dust until the day you fill it out or otherwise contact us with your address.

Please. Pretty pretty please. Fill out your survey as soon as humanly possible, so we can get you your rad stuff!

Okay. Running out of options. Only one. LAST. CHANCE.

THE POWER OF AUNT SADIE COMPELLS YOU!
A, ahem, lighter message will follow tomorrow :)

Thank you all again for your support! We can't tell you how much we appreciate it!

[Emphasis mine -Matt]

ITEM: Batvark: PENIS is in stores (The "Censored For Grandma Variant" Batvark: XXXXX, might be in stores... I haven't heard anything either way. The VIRGIN Batvark: PENIS variant is available if you know a guy who knows a guy. (I'm a guy...))

ITEM: Cerebus masks and whatnots, I added the Cerebus in Hell? Logo, the THIRD Amicable Spider-Vark design (this one has the logo and Spider-Vark on the same side), and the Approval Is An Authoritarian Construct logo. Unless someone demands them, I'm leaving Joe Cerebus and Donald J. Cerebus out...

ITEM: Signed copies of Vark Wars: Walt's Empire Strikes Back (Signed by Dave, Signed by Dave and me, Signed by me after I scribble out Dave's name, Pretty much available Signed only...) (I only mention it because I still have them...)

ITEM: The Wilf Jenkins Collection available from Looking For Heroes, for $10 (CAD) plus $4 dollars shipping to Canada and $5 dollars shipping to the USA. All the money goes to the Food Bank of the Waterloo Region. I haven't heard if these have been processed and are available for purchase, but I haven't heard that they're not either...

ITEM: Limited overstock of SOME of the items from the Remastered Cerebus #1 Kickstarter campaign are available from cerebusoverload.com

Next Time: Penis and Hobbs...

Speaking of, today's Moment of Cerebus comes from the fine folks at the Waverly Press who sent in:
Good morning Matt.

Since the Cerebus No. 1 Kickstarters have been fulfilled I thought it good time to show how Dave's original art sketchbook covers turned out.

He made 6 total.
They look great:

If you're one of the lucky bastards who got one of these, know that I hate you. I hate you so damn much...

The Waverly Press continued:
There are 2 extras which have the art as wraparound covers but I'm not yet sure what we are going to do with those.
Click for bigger:

They continued:
We might offer them on the XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX.
What's that blacked out bit?

That's for me to know and you to wildly speculate buddy...

Thanks to everybody who e-mailed me so I didn't have to really write a post today!

Next Time: Hopefully something comes into the Ol' AMOC Mailbag like it did today...

Cerebus Around the World and Web #47 by Oliver Simonsen

Hi Everybody!

Order HERMANN #1! (The NEW CiH?), buy Batvark: PENIS on the 30th, check out the new Cerebus masks and whatnots, Signed copies of Vark Wars: Walt's Empire Strikes Back (Signed by Dave, Signed by Dave and me, Signed by me after I scribble out Dave's name, Pretty much available Signed only...), don't forget cerebusoverload.com the Wilf Jenkins Collection available from Looking For Heroes, for $10 (CAD) plus $4 dollars shipping to Canada and $5 dollars shipping to the USA. All the money goes to the Food Bank of the Waterloo Region

Good news about the Kickstarter for Dave and Carson Grubaugh's You Don't Know Jack, (which has an Indiegogo, I guess...):
Helllooooo Backers!

The moment we have all been waiting for is here. The books are in and they look awesome!

Thank you all so much for helping us make this possible.

I have been signing and prepping books as they come in so when YDKJ itself arrived on Friday me and Torie were able to jump right into packaging, printing labels, etc.

The first batch of packages should go out Monday.

Those of you who we have already generated a label for should be getting, or have already gotten, an email with your USPS tracking number. Hopefully all the shenanigans going on with the USPS lately do not affect the speedy delivery of everyone's books. Keep an eye on your shipment and please let us know if there are issues.

The international orders and more individualized orders should start getting labels in the next couple of days.

HEADS UP:

As I was signing copies of YDKJ I customized a small amount of copies at random, so keep an eye out for these one-of-a-kind, hopefully entertaining, customizations.

Thanks again and please do let us know what you think of the books as you get them!

Carson Grubaugh

Hi, Matt--Appropos of yesterday's AMOC entry, here are a few pix of tracing papers that Dave sent me for my 50th birthday. I think you may have seen these before, since I lived in Manitowoc then. Feel free to post them.

Best you and the ladies,

Jeff

Now I only have eight unread emails in my inbox...

Stylin' 'n profilin' (Dave's Weekly Update #358)

Hi, Everybody!

Heeeeeere's

Well, that was short...

But Dave also sent me:
23 September 20
Hi Matt!

Finally crossing this off my "To Do" list. Story written by Gene Day in 1970 when he was 18 or 19 years old that appeared in the first issue of DARK FANTASY in 1973. I got into the habit of reading it aloud on his birthday (August 13) and the anniversary of his death (September 23), always thinking "I really should type this out someday" (I couldn't photocopy it out of DF without causing serious damage). It certainly resonates with a YHWH-centric "older than God" viewpoint. Which suggests to me that Gene had been "picked to click" in that end of things from an early age.

I've fixed the misspellings but left most of the grammatical glitches and eccentric phrasing alone.

What would it be like to have been
when nothing was,
and be,
when something isn't

THE IMMORTAL
Howard E. Day
"How long has it been, Sun, since you and I knew birth?"
EONS, HARD ONE, the Sun answered. But I no longer had any knowledge of how long an "eon" was, so I left his reply at that. I had more words to speak of with that dim ball of gas and fire.
"I tire, Sun, my old companion. My days are so numbered that there remains no number in existence to count them with. Can you remember the wind, Sun? Can you remember its soft caresses?"
DO NOT SPEAK TO ME OF THE WIND, HARD ONE. I HAVE NEVER FELT IT.
I was heartbroken to think of him never having had the soft touch of the breeze tickling his chin, or the rage of a spinning typhoon blasting his fiery eyes.
"But, you do have knowledge of the flowers?"
I HAVE.
"…and of the trees…"
I HAVE.
"…and the rivers and mountains?"
I HAVE.
"Ahh! Then you must long for their presence once again."
I DO NOT.
"Then you are not of my being, old Sun…nor of my soul! I loved the dancing of the sweet, green, dew-dripping leaves of the giant oaks and firs. I rejoiced in the swaying of those rainbow flowers in the grip of that frolicking breeze, about which you know nothing."
WHAT MADE YOU THINK OF THOSE ANCIENT THINGS, HARD ONE?
"I really don't know, Sun. Perhaps it was something I recalled in the tail of that last shooting star? Perhaps a stirring dream in the vision of a distant nova. Every now and again, I recall some memory of my long, long life.
"I remember a boy named Eddie. He was small and he played for hours upon my hard, grotesque skull, one day. He fell-jumped off and rolled in the fresh spring grasses. His name was Eddie and he was nice lad with a golden voice and a mane of fiery hair. A beautiful lad. A wonderful lad…"
THE GRASSES ARE GONE AND THE BOY IS DEAD, HARD ONE. ROTTED INTO WORMS. DRIFTED INTO DUST. THINK NOT OF THOSE DAYS LOST TO US. THEY WILL BRING ONLY LONGINGS AND DISCONTENTMENT TO YOUR HEART.
"Perhaps, but I enjoy them…those dead memories of dead things. You might call them my companions in thought, I suppose. No matter. They give me comfort and that is far enough.
"Are you growing dim, Sun?"
AYE, HARD ONE. YOU HAVE SEEN MY BIRTH AND SOON YOU SHALL SEE MY DEATH, I WOULD WAGER. MY GASES -- THEY DISPERSE, FADE AWAY. MY GLOW IS SLOWLY, PAINFULLY DISAPPEARING. I felt the pangs of fear at Sun's maddening words. I knew them to be truthful. And in knowing, knew what would then transpire.
"I cannot remember well any longer, Sun. I can just barely recall your birth, but not clearly. I know I was here long before that. Who am I, Sun? What manner of creature am I to have seen so much?"
YOU ARE THE ANCIENT ONE, THE HARD ONE, THE IMMORTAL ONE, THE TIMELESS ONE. THAT IS ALL. NOTHING MORE. NOTHING LESS.
"I am the Immortal? I like not the ring of that word. It sounds as timeless…as forever!"
IT IS.
"Then I like not what I am. I would much rather be like the boy in my memories. I have forgotten his name. I would rather be like him and the others before him. Mortal. Then I would be dead also, Sun.  Rotted into worms. Drifted into Dust."
SOMEDAY, PERHAPS. IN A MILLION, MILLION EONS…OR MORE, YOU SHALL. BUT NOT TODAY, HARD ONE. NO, NOT TODAY.
"It is senseless being immortal! It isn't good enough to remember all that I have witnessed and overheard! What good is it to be immortal and yet not remember?"
I DO NOT KNOW, HARD ONE.
"I remember the day the first star came out, Sun. Stars so huge, they encompassed the space of what some call galaxies. Huge, lovely spheres of flame blistering the very molecules of space,
"Why did I recall such a thing? It is such a trivial memory?
"I recall the birth of the planets, balls of molten rock, spat out of the stars, whirling, twisting, flashing until they finally stopped and became as they were to be.
"Funny, isn't it, that I can bring that back to mind."
I DO NOT KNOW, HARD ONE. I CANNOT TALK MUCH LONGER NOW. I GROW DIMMER WITH EACH PASSING MOMENT. MY BELLY IS EMPTY. MY SOUL IS DYING. I WOULD CRY, BUT I CANNOT.
"I will miss you, Sun, when you are gone. There will be no one to talk to.
"I remember God."
HOW IS THIS SO?? DID NOT GOD CREATE THE UNIVERSE?
"I recall seeing him materialized from nothingness. Yes, I recall that quite clearly.
"Where is God now, anyway, Sun? It seems such a long time since last he spoke to me."
GOD HAS BEEN DEAD THESE PAST THOUSAND EONS, HARD ONE. YOU DO RECALL AND FORGET STRANGE THINGS, IMMORTAL ONE. YOU REMEMBER THE OLDEST MEMORIES, YET YOU CANNOT RECALL THE MOST RECENT PAST. I BELIEVE YOU SHALL FORGET MY EXISTENCE A SECOND AFTER I AM DEPARTED.
"I realize what you say, Sun. But you I shall never forget…never.
"I still wish I could feel the wind upon my face, and see the twirling leaves fall from the trees, burnt brown by your hot breath. I wish tiny lads would dance upon my brittle skull."
PERHAPS YOU SHALL, HARD ONE. SOMEDAY AGAIN…SOMEDAY TWO THOUSAND EONS FROM NOW. PERHAPS…P..E..R..H..A..P..S…..
The light has vanished. It is cold and black in every direction. The Sun has died and I am alone once more.
I can feel nothing. I can see nothing. I am nothing.
I remember the day the Universe was created from nothing.
I remember...

Odd Transformations 4. . .part 4

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

This past February in The Thing on Cerebus’ Head we saw a page from Dave’s eleventh notebook. The notebook book supposedly covered Cerebus #96 though 102, and had 114 pages scanned. I noticed we haven’t seen page one of this notebook on AMoC, so I took a look at it.

Notebook #11, page 1

So there is a thumbnail for the cover to Cerebus #96, but the text that goes along with it? That is for issue #95, page 12 and 13. Which we looked at the rough page layouts from Notebook #10, page 109, in Odd Transformations. . .4 way back in May 2016. There were only 115 pages scanned in notebook #10, so page 109 is pretty closed to the end of that notebook. I can see how the dialogue would flow over to this notebook.

Page two continues the dialogue, most of which makes the finished page, but there is some unused dialogue as well.

Notebook #11, page 2
