Dave had to do a great deal of it without Gerhard's backgrounds and Dave ended up doing so in very much more inventive ways than he did in those first 64 issues before Ger joined on. In case you haven't heard the story, Ger's ulcers were so bad at that point (especially by the time of The Last Day) that he was physically unable to keep up the work schedule that they had accomplished for the previous 15 years or so.
