Dave: I ...Matt: I got a 'please hold-um' -

Dave: I realized just a little while ago that "Glamourpuss" and Crumb's "Art & Beauty" are, on a fundamental level, twinned enterprises. Both feature their respective creators doing their best pen & ink work of women, using photographic resources, and in both cases these pin-up drawings are paired with a somewhat ironic narration as if written by a third-person for a traditional lifestyle publication (ie, these aren't personal essays, but commentary written from the POV of a fictional or distanced persona).

And as near as I can tell, the inspiration was similar for both artists - wanting to just do 'pure' drawing, and then contextualizing it with text and marketing it as a comic publication.

It's a little difficult to figure out exactly when the two stand-alone Art & Beauty issues were released or even if that was the first iteration, but I think it was in the early 2000's (2002-2003). Were you aware of it when you conceived of Glamourpuss or at any point during the lifespan of that book?

And on a higher level, as someone who really REALLY knows how to analyze linework, what's your take on the differences in approach between yourself and Crumb?

Thanks!Dave Koppermanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09292071349686573917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837001751311078781.post-81386192085945572142021-02-03T05:29:32.182-06:002021-02-03T05:29:32.182-06:00Don't like being vilified when that was not my...Don't like being vilified when that was not my thought.

But, your last paragraph? As usual. I mean, there's a reason why the stack of letters from him (back in the day) is 2-feet tall).

But. All I asked was, "what do you think Chris and Bill were trying to do with NM, religiously."

I wasn't trying to subvert religion. That is sound moral reasoning on your part.

Speaking from personal experience corporate entertainments can be fun, even lucrative, in the short term, but potentially demoralizing and spiritually limiting in the long term. So, your comment on the potential shortcomings of corporate products geared towards teens holds water. I think that they are even more pernicious for adults to consume, if they are not careful.

Brian Westhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12861778771076926455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837001751311078781.post-27715406184099973482021-02-01T20:25:54.288-06:002021-02-01T20:25:54.288-06:00Oh, and I'm sure we can expect Sean R. to be a...Oh, and I'm sure we can expect Sean R. to be along any minute to lecture Dave for calling the Cerebus audience miniscule and declining.
