"Dash his-little-fly brains out..."

Hi, Everybody!

If only we could remaster ourselves

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that the extra prints from Cerebus No 1 (Pages 2, 3 & 9) will be available for purchase on Saturday. That's also a good day to head over to:

https://momentofcerebus.blogspot.com

and give a listen to the monthly talk between Dave Sim and "Manly" Matt Dow. They call it "Please Hold For Dave Sim". We call it two and a half to three hours of unfiltered Dave Sim answering questions submitted each month by readers of the blog.

What? Yes, this month's deadline to submit questions has passed. What? I am not a jerk, it was a holiday. And. And... I forgottomentionit. But I'm sure Dave will mention this Kickstarter campaign. I'm just sure of it.

Cerebus No 1 Bonus Prints now available

Hi Everyone, just a reminder that the bonus prints from Cerebus No 1 are now available as Add-Ons. As mentioned previously, anyone purchasing the $900 version of a Cerebus No 4 CAN Portfolio will automatically recieve these prints free of charge. Everyone else can purchase them individually or in one convenient bundle. Free Worldwide Shipping.
And, Hey! if you still got money, There's a Kickstarter for Will Eisner: A Life in Postcards.

Can I just run some of the pages I had to format yesterday?

Please Hold For Dave Sim 7/2022

Hi, Everybody!

Three HOURS. Two minutes and twenty seconds.

Let's hope I can get the thirteen parts assembled as videos before midnight tonight...

Anyway, the "As" get first:

And now the "Vs":

Part 1: we remember Jeff:
And Steve has a Jeff related question:
And everybody else had questions about Steve's birthday gift to me:
And Steve was wondering about Fred, Ethel, and the little fella with the hair:
Part 2: Dan wanted to know:
Matt,
How many of the 6,000 pages and 300 covers exist?
How many of them does Dave possess?
Is Dave “satisfied” with scans or is there a reason to pursue the actual pieces?
If you’d like, you can forward these questions to Dave.
Dan

Part 3: Mike Sewall asks:
Hey Dave and Manly Matt –

On A Moment of Cerebus Blog in 2017, there is a listing for Collected Letters 1990, Collected Letters 2004 Vol 3, and Collected Letters 2006. Do these still exist as digital files or (gasp!) real honest-to-goodness books?

Also - Why was letters 2 so much different than Letters 1 – trim size, no title page, etc.?
Thanks for all you do!
- M J (Mike) Sewall
P.S. – Thanks for the copies of Letters 1 and 2! My Cerebus/Sim bookshelf is pushing out lesser works by those little-known-hacks, Miller, Moore and Watterson. I am busily shoring up from underneath to accommodate the “Sim Wing” of my house.
Part 4: Easton, PA’s resident troublemaker, Michael R. asks:
Hi Matt!
Hope you are enjoy/enjoying the Fourth of July weekend. My questions for Dave.

Hi Dave!
Thank you for the " Quick and Dirty Portfolios " of Cerebus No. 4 6-7/78. Are any differences between the one you sent me and what is being offered on this Kickstarter?

My other question pertains to the last "Please Hold". You and Matt were discussing about video editing and the difficulties of it. Has there been any outtakes on your Weekly Updates which maybe you can put together to make a bloopers segment? It might be fun to watch.

Michael R

Part 5: A guy wants to print Dave's stuff.
Part 6: Coin Upton said:
Oh yes, I got the letter a couple days ago... It usually takes me awhile to compose my thoughts.

I am most grateful for the cheque and yes, doing a "digest" (could you ask Dave what he means by "digest"? Does he mean a mini-comic - 4 1/4 X 5 1/2 inches? A digest to me is 5 1/2 X 8 1/2 inches.) sounds like fun. I have actually thought a lot about the enigma that is Dave Sim. It would be about my relationship with Dave, starting with the reprinting of my story "Chris" in the back of Cerebus. "Chris" was an attack on Woke culture before it even had that name. It would be in part about how it's possible to fundamentally disagree with someone while remaining on friendly terms, a lost art I'm afraid in these days of cancel culture I fear. I imagine we can find things to agree about. Thank Dave for giving me this opportunity. However, I do consider my abysmal spelling to be part of my comics homey charm... :)

Thank you
Colin
PS I don't think Peter Birkamoe (I don't know who he is) is arranging my trip to TCAF but rather the publisher of Conundrum Press. He will fly me there but I will have to find a place to stay while in Toronto.
Part 7: Nick wants Dave for a podcast (specifically to talk about Tangent), and Justin is a pothead (maybe):
Part 8: and we answer the questions you guys had on Margaret's Notebook post:
Okay, the rigamarole is down below.

Have fun!

Next Time: Fuck, man i just spent all day making THIS post...

Cerebus #43 Sketches and Dialogue

MARGARET LISS:

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Last week we looked at page 21 of Dave Sim’s fourth Cerebus notebook, which had 99 pages out of 108 scanned, and it covers Cerebus #41 through 44.  On page 71 of the notebook there is an issue box number 43 and a story title “The Day After Election Day”. However, Cerebus #43 wasn’t called that, but “Election Night”.

Notebook #4, page 71

Dave said this about the issue’s original title “The story was originally called ‘The Day After Election Day’ taking into account the length of time for election results to arrive and the tabulated in a pre-electronic media civilization. It just didn’t ring true: it would probably have taken a week or more. ‘The Week After Election Day’ had even less immediacy to it, so I sketched a point until it broke: ‘Election Night’ and somehow all of the results were tabulated in a few hours.”

The Suenteus Po dialogue at the top of the page wasn’t used. Some of the other dialogue was. The rough sketches of the hall during the tabulation of the results are pretty closed to some of the panels in Cerebus #43.

CIH? Trading Cards: Series 6 Preview

Benjamin Hobbs:

This week I've been working on the trading cards for the upcoming Kickstarter for Swords of Cerebus In Hell? Volumes 11 and 12.

The Hermann card is in progress:

The border was briefly orange, but Hermann is an Aardvark, so he should have a black border.  (Unless I decide to give him the title of ARTIFICIAL CHEESE-DUST COVERED AARDVARK. Then the border could be orange.)

I was trying to see how long it would take to do sketch cards of Batvark and Dr. Varkhatten.  Batvark always takes a long time to draw. I filled in the left side of the figure with mostly black, which looks alright, and saved some time. The grey was added with a water-based marker, the same as the previous Cerebus sketch card. Water-based markers draw mostly smoothly over India Ink.

The first take on Varkhatten looked a bit off.  The nib was dying, and the sketch cards are unforgiving with ink anyway, leaving a less than precise line.  Additionally, the blue marker is Alcohol-based, which, apparently, smears India Ink badly.

The next Varkhatten card was drawn with a Micron pen and colored with the Alcohol-based marker.  The ink didn't smear, except in the large black circle on his chest.  The Alcohol-based marker bleeds through the card. The Water-Based marker does not.  I'll be looking for a blue Water-based marker soon.

Next Week: The Watchvark card, assuming I can find the original art scans. Blue Water-Based marker update?

Colin Upton, and a whole #$%&-LOAD of Cerebus trades...

Hi, Everybody!

Yesterday, I left the house early and had a fun date "night" with the wife that included a trip to the bookstore where I got Monsters by Barry Windsor-Smith, and a Brewer game where they beat the "World Chump Chicago Cabs", in Ten innings, so I didn't get home until late. And THAT'S why I didn't do a post.

Anyway,
Mondays(?):

Colin's email is there at the top. Feel free to send him a message and buy one of everything he's got...

And then since I didn't "Moment" yesterday...

Nate "THE GODDAMN BATMAN" Oberstein

"Who?"

Nate "THE GODDAMN BATMAN". That's how he's listed in my phone sent me his collection of Cerebus Trades and said, "Not complete, but getting close.":

"Yeah, but who the @#$& is Nate "THE GODDAMN BATMAN" Oberstein?!?"

Ah, poor Imaginary A Moment of Cerebus Reader who lives rent-free in my head, what kind of Cerebus Fan DOESN'T know Nate "THE GODDAMN BATMAN" Oberstein?

Nate's collection includes (almost) every printing of every trade. To the point that Dave and Gerhard used to contact NATE to see what printing they were up to for various trades.

Nate a G-DD-MN hero, like THE GODDAMN BATMAN...

Anyway let's take a closer look:
Not sure what's on the left, but here's the High Society DVD, Collected Letters 2, the foreign reprints, and Swords of Cerebus in Hell?

More foreign reprints, A (I assume custom) cover collection, Hardcover Swords of Cerebus in Hell?, The Regency Edition of High Society, a red lil' book that's probably neat as @#$&, the Official Covers book, Swords of Cerebus, and more Swords of Cerebus in Hell? on top.

Swords of Cerebus, Volume 1 (Who knew that the trade dress changed so much?
Nate "The GODDAMN BATMAN, That's who!)

The last of Nate's 15 Volume ones, and High Society

Church & State volumes 1 & 2

Last of Church & State 2, Jaka's Story, Melmoth, Flight, and Women.
(Who knew that the "spineless" series ran up to Melmoth?
Nate "THE GODDAMN BATMAN" THAT'S WHO!!!)

Women Reads Minds Guys. Rick's Story, Going Home, Form & Void, Latter Days, The Last Day, and Collected Letters 2004.

Now, as impressive as that all is, Nate's still missing a couple of volumes.

Riggy-riggy-marole!:

Total guesswork, the real ones will look so much better
Hello Backers,

First up are 5 and 10 packs of both versions of Cerebus No 4 Remastered, now available in the Add-Ons section.

5 Pack of CEREBUS NO 4 REMASTERED $75 (save $25)
10 Pack of CEREBUS NO 4 REMASTERED $100 (save $100)

Additional postage is added for these copies.

Keep watching your inbox for more specials.
Update the second:
4th of July Special #2
Just sold on Heritage Auctions for $$$
We all know about the recent sale of the original art for Cerebus No 4. That is the reason we're all here (duh), but there was another auction that ended just a couple of weeks ago on June 19. That auction featured 3 pages of original art from Cerebus No 1 and those pages sold for incredible sums. These pages were sold by Dave for $10 each back in 1978. 44 years later they sold for:

Page 2: $24,960 ($31,200 with Buyer's Premium*)
Page 3: $23,040 ($28,800 with Buyer's Premium)
Page 9: $28,800 ($36,000 with Buyer's Premium)

*Buyer's Premium? Heritage Auctions charges a 20% fee on all transactions.

The good news is that any one that purchases the CEREBUS NO 4 CAN PORTFOLIO - Option 4 ($900) will receive prints of these pages for Free. These prints will be Single-Sided and added to your shipment at no extra charge.

But what about the (as of this writing) other 98 backers? All backers will be able to purchase these plates individually for $15 each during the last week of the campaign, July 9-16. No additional shipping costs will be added for these plates.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support and stay tuned for one more special offer tomorrow. We'll also let you know if Pieces Of Turtles 8.2 US Edition will be available in 5 and 10 packs.

The ol' AMOC Mailbag is bursting because I'm lazy...

Hi, Everybody!

My buddy Steve sent in:
Hiya Matt -

Here's one for the "it's a slow day in AMOC land" drawer.
Bought the portfolio set because it has a great Aragones Groo print; turns out it also has two Moebius prints and some other nice things - and dreck like this too, unfortunately.

Happy fodder day....more grist for the mill....
Steve

So, that's a thing...

And Spatula sent in:
Greetings. Hope all is well at the Manor.
Dave sent me some SDOAR mockups and some Cerebus tracing. Don't think I will toss them up on the Facebooks like I normally do. You can leak the Hell?bot or any of the goodies at AMOC if you so desire.

Vootie,
Spatula

I dunno what "BH" got, but MD got this.

Well that's something...
