Sketch: Bat-Vark (2002) Art by Jim Lee (Click image to enlarge) |
(via Twitter, 7 December 2013)
A Bat sketch of sorts for @themightylayman around the time he left WildStorm editorial to return to writing.
Jim Lee first broke into the comic books in 1987 as an artist for Marvel Comics, illustrating titles such as Alpha Flight and Punisher War Journal and The Uncanny X-Men. In 1992 Lee and several other artists formed their own publishing company, Image Comics, to publish their creator-owned titles, with Lee publishing his titles through his studio, Wildstorm Productions, such as WildC.A.T.s and Gen13. Lee sold Wildstorm in 1998 to DC Comics, where he continued to run Wildstorm as a DC imprint until DC ended Wildstorm in 2010. On February 18, 2010, Jim Lee was announced as the new Co-Publisher of DC Comics with Dan DiDio, both replacing Paul Levitz.
John Layman was an editor for the DC Comics imprint, Wildstorm, before writing comics full-time in 2002. He has written a number of creator-owned titles at Image Comics, including Chew with artist Rob Guillory. He is a huge fan of Cerebus.

I'm caught between hating Jim Lee's art, and being glad that someone as relevant (well, that's finally fading away but whatever) as Jim Lee doing a fun fan piece of Cerebus.
I'm also vexed by memories of early 90s me buying comics just because Jim Lee's name was on them.
It's a weird cascade of emotions I'm dealing with here.
