Next Time: Something Cerebus related, I'm sure...

Sunday 29 May 2022

Where were YOU in 1982? (Specifically between October 1st to November 7th.)

Hi, Everybody!

So, I've mentioned the Waverly Press' latest book, Bobby Grossman’s LOW FIDELITY, the Kickstarter for which ends in 59 hours (so two days and eleven hours...), well, the next* book is another Dave Sim/Aardvark-Vanaheim collaboration.

"Yeah, we know, The Last Day..."

Sorry imaginary A Moment of Cerebus reader who lives rent-free in my head, but you're wrong:
*as far as I know. I mean The Waverly Press might be doing another book that ISN'T Cerebus related...

ANYWAY, this is a book that DAVE started putting together in 82/83 and eventually decided to shelve.

Dave has sent everything he has on file to the Waverly Press, and they're starting to go through it and see what's there.

So, as the title up there says: Where were YOU in 1982? Me? I was three. But, if you weren't a small child, The Waverly Press would love to hear from you if have:
  • Any drawings Dave made in 82
  • Any promotional material from the stops like flyers, posters, etc.
  • Anything interesting that can go into the book.
Anyone who gives them scans will receive a note of thanks in the book.

They are also looking for:
  • Any comic shops that are still in business that hosted stops to see if any firsthand accounts can be had.
  • Also, any Cerebus readers that attended any of the tour stops that can share their memories
What AMOC has, is:
And then doing a Google for Dave Sim 1982 turned up:
So, if YOU have anything that'd be of interest, shoot me an email at momentofcerebus@gmail.com and I'll get it to the Waverly Press.

And here's a little preview:

PoT8.2 Update: the Next.

Hi, Everybody!

Last I heard about Pieces of Turtles 8.2, Dave was gonna have Birdsong make up some Certificates of Authenticity.

Well:

Here's a bigger crap-version:

Okay, okay. Here it is in color:

Heritage, pretty much has the best Cerebus Original Art deals available...
Including Death's Dark Tread. My little band of Rebels are still looking for people to join us. The CURRENT deal is:
How it works is you tell me what you wanna kick in, $2000 GUARANTEES you a page, less gets you a page if we have less than 23 people kick in (currently we're at 6 or 7.), the amount you kick in (under 2K) is how you rank for picking a page if we win. IF we win, I'm going to get all the art scanned and have a set of prints made for everyone who chips in. And then we run the list of who gets what. If we manage to pull this off, with LESS than 23 people, the leftover pages either go to the higher pledgers, or go back to Dave. (The high rollers get to decide that when the time comes.)

If we end up with MORE than 23 people, highest money in gets first pick, followed by everybody else until everything is gone. In case of a tie in amount chipped in, whoever chipped in first gets first shot at the page. (This part is wonky and will probably change as the situation does. We currently have less than 23 people, and I'm not taking a page no matter what, so I don't think it'll be an issue.)

And there is a buyer's premium that gets added on to amount bid, so that's a factor in how much gets bid.
If you wanna get in on this, momentofcerebus@gmail.com or thevarkwars@gmail.com

We WERE winning for a little while there... BUT, there ARE 18 days left before this thing is over...

Dave Talking with Cerebus from Cerebus #229

MARGARET LISS:

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Way back in July 2015 in a post called Cool’s Right we saw a couple of pages from Dave Sim’s 26th Cerebus notebook which showed the dialogue between Dave and Cerebus at the end of Rick’s Story. The pages were #44, 46, and 47. I mentioned that the dialogue continued until page 49 and I also mentioned the contents of page 45.

I figured it is about time we saw those pages. Page 48 picks up the dialogue right where page 47 left of. The dialogue on page 48 starts on page 193 of Rick’s Story, or Cerebus #229 page 7:

Notebook #26, page 48

The dialogue matches up word for word until after Dave’s bit “(interrupting) Thinking.” Cerebus still rants a bit, but some of the verbiage is different, and then Dave’s line “(going along for the ride) All the voices in your head” is left out of the finished page, 194 of Rick’s Story.  We do get to a the missed line about the voices in Cerebus’ head down the bottom of page 194, but instead it is Dave saying “(allow me to wedge myself into his monologue) Nothing to do but listen to all the stupid voices in your head. . .”

In between we get some dialogue that didn’t make it into the notebook, this being part of it: “(trying to restore him to my wavelength) It as the same with me at Peter’s Place. At the time I was convinced that I was. . .”

The dialogue on page 49 continues the from page 49, but it doesn’t match up precisely with the dialogue on the bottom of page 194 and on 195. This almost ½ page of dialogue appears to have additional dialogue put into it on page 195.  On page 195, it is just Cerebus talking at Dave, and Dave just has one line at the top of the page and at the bottom of the page.

Notebook #26, page 49

The rest of the dialogue between the two doesn’t make it into the notebook.

And on page 45 of the notebook, a couple of pages before the dialogue is finished, we see a couple of sketches of Cerebus opening up the package that Dave left for Cerebus to find.

Notebook #26, page 45

PLAZA by Yokoyama Yuichi Kickstarter Pre-Launch Link and Diamond ordering live!

Hello LTL friends, Sean here.

At long last, the new book from Living the Line is almost here!

PLAZA, by the great Yokoyama Yuichi, is almost ready to preorder! Our Kickstarter for this maniacal manga magic trick will be live in just a few days, and the Diamond Comics order period just opened as well!

PLAZA is translated by noted manga scholar
Ryan Holmberg, and includes a revealing interview with Yokoyama.

Bigger, bolder, and louder than ever before, neo-manga artist Yokoyama Yuichi is back with PLAZA! Inspired by Carnaval in Brazil, PLAZA offers a maniacal extravaganza of marching, dancing, leaping, firing, cheering, smashing, and exploding over the course of 225 eye-and-eardrum-confounding pages. Originally published in Japan in 2019, this oversize English edition of PLAZA brings to full, hyper-animated life the spectacular graphic art of this genre-defying work of avant-garde comics.

If you want to get a sneak peek at the art for the book, check out this tech video with both Carson and I, where we discuss Adobe Lightroom in the context of book production, and accidentally give an overview peek at half of the book as teeny tiny postage stamps! An interesting birds-eye view of Yokohama’s design process that undergirds the entirety of this singular, inventive book.

Paper to Pixel:Art Reproduction in the Digital Age— Using Lightroom Classic for Image Prep

And be sure to check out the newly-updated Living the Line site for new videos, new book announcements and sample images, lineup changes, and more!

If you backed the Form & Void Kickstarter, you might be one of the TWO lucky people who haven't filled out your surveys, thus preventing me from getting my copies when the numbers from the Mass Market Edition come in and the books get printed. So, maybe take care of that huh?

Speaking of the Waverly Press, I posted a bit ago about their latest book, Bobby Grossman’s LOW FIDELITY, the Kickstarter for which ends in 10 days, and somebody asked what a book with photos of Debbie Harry had to do with Cerebus. Which is a good dang question. What DOES Debbie Harry have to do with Cerebus?
This. Duh!
