SDOAR GFM #32: Jim Steranko Sends His Regards...

"Please give Dave my regards!"                                                                     - Mr. Jim Steranko to Jen DiGiacomo (still no relation) at PulpFest in Pittsburgh

Yup. That just happened on Sunday. I do panels and a dealers room table at PulpFest every year, and this year, Mr. Steranko had a dealers table, not far from me. I've seen him at these events over the years, but I've never been able to work up the courage to say hi. And this year was no different. That is until Sunday afternoon when everyone was packing up. I spied a moment when he was not being pestered by anyone, screwed up my courage and said, "Mr. Steranko?'

Crickets.

I tried again, only louder, "Mr. Steranko?" He finally turned around, and we ended up having a delightful 30-minute conversation. He even asked for my card after I showed off some original pulp art that I'd acquired. Admittedly, not everything was wine and roses as I used the past tense is describing his career, which he called me out on. Flustered, I responded with, "I'm sorry, I'm just really nervous. It's taken me years to work up the courage to say hello."

But after that, it could not have gone better. I mentioned I was helping Dave out on The Strange Death of Alex Raymond, and his face lit up. "Please give Dave my regards." I also mentioned their last phone call when Mr. Steranko was mid-brushstroke on a painting, so I asked if Dave could call him back at some point. "Not right now -- I'm dealing with a lot of things, but once those clear up, I'll let you know. Is that okay?"

Grinning, I countered with,"Of course!"

It's not everyday that we get to meet our heroes. And for me, that hero is a living legend.

Alright, enough about me, let's see what'd going on with the ol' tote board...
