Vacation Sketches Part Deux

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Dave Sim's notebook #10 covered Cerebus #112 / 113. It also has some planning for Jaka's Story - see Jaka's Story I, Jaka's Story II, and Jaka the Dancer. While I loved seeing the behind the scenes stuff for Jaka's Story (as issue #114 was my first Cerebus issue), I thought the Dave sketching random people that we saw in Vacation Time: San Jose was fun to see. It was something different, that with Dave having to focus on mostly Cerebus, we didn't get to see a lot of.

Well, those vacation sketches from Dave were later in the notebook, pages #57 and 58. Earlier in the notebook, there are some more "vacation sketches". At least that is what I think they are - as it appears we get to meet Lorraine the flight attendant on page 5.

Notebook #10, page 5

On page 6 there is a loose and fast sketch that looks a bit like Mary Ernestway. On page 7 there is another fast sketch, takes up most of the page:

Notebook #10, page 7
On page 8, we have a sketch of a woman with large earrings smoking on a small (pool side?) chair. Quite the pants she has on. Goes with the hair and earrings. On the same page another loose and fast sketch.

Notebook #10, page 8

Neat sketches. Thanks as usual, Margaret!

Here's the latest on the Cover book -- according to the Previews site, it's coming out October 26.

However, oftentimes IDW lists stuff 2 weeks out that disappear the next week.

Travis - DO they? I didn't know that.

It's actually quite a process for Diamond to decide when what ships, I think. With the CEREBUS IN HELL? mini-series Sandeep's getting the issues into final form (he's got #2 finished and it's off to Sean for full vetting) and then we're sending them to Marquis with Diamond's ship dates. I have a sneaking hunch that isn't going to work. We'll get bumped by what we get bumped by for whatever reason. BUT! We can at least tell you a) the issue is finished and b) it is at Marquis. Hopefully all four issues by the end of this month.

Margaret - Yes, the pants really rocked that outfit!

Well, it seems to be IDW in particular -- every Wednesday, the list for the next Wednesday is posted in full, and the list for the BIG 5 publishers goes up for 2 weeks out from then. It seems to me that IDW listings in particular change from the "2 weeks out" list to the list for the "next Wednesday" stuff. I don't know if it's IDW stating things are due out and then have to backtrack, or if Diamond lists the stuff and then IDW tells them, no, that's not coming out yet.

So even though the Covers book is currently on the "two weeks out" list, until the Covers book is on the list for 10/26 that comes out on 10/19, I'm not quite believing this.

Of course, Diamond also has some trouble keeping some of the Top Shelf listings under the IDW aegis at times. I've emailed Chris Staros a few times to let him know that Diamond was still listing TS stuff in with the "riffraff" ;) (my word, definitely not his!)
