My Visit To Escape Pod Comics

302 Main Street, Huntington, NY 11743

MICHAEL RAGIEL:
On Friday, September 29 I was able to visit Escape Pod Comics comics store for the first time. If it wasn't for Dave or Gerhard mentioning the store I would have never even thought about coming here. It also happened to be by chance. We live in Pennsylvania. My wife and I were going to a wedding in Huntington, Long Island, New York.

It was discussed that she would go shopping and I would go visit. It worked out perfectly. It was about 20 minutes from the hotel we were staying. When I arrived at the shop, I took a few photos outside and went in. I recognized Menachem immediately. I flubbed my introduction trying to explain who I was and why I came. I think he sorta recognized me. If you go to Gerhard's Blog and search at the end of April/May when Gerhard visited Escape Pod Comics and his trip to the East Coast Comic Con, I was the one with a beard with Gerhard.

The store is small and we walked around a couple of times focusing on the Cerebus wall. Even though the store is small, it is super packed and has something for everyone. Even children. It was hard for me to focus on everything. Menachem is extremely knowledgeable on all things comics, books of comics, creators of comics and even comic book stores. He knew about some of the comic book stores where I'm from in Pennsylvania.

Despite our pleasant and rapid conversations and me possibly interrupting Menachem constantly. Sorry Menachem. I don't always get a chance to speak with someone about Dave/Gerhard/Cerebus. Menachem did give me a brief history how Dave came became involved with Escape Pod comics.

I couldn't stay as long as I would have like, but I am grateful that I did have the opportunity to go. If anybody does get a chance to go, do it. You won’t be disappointed. There really is something for everyone.

My LCS: Cave Comics

57 Church Hill Rd. Newtown CT. 06470 USA

JIM SHERIDAN:
The photo I sent you of a sketch of Cerebus as Batman was taken at Cave Comics in Newtown, CT. This is a store that has been around since 1989 and even just built a new building next to the old one, which is a good sign. I have purchased most of my Cerebus, Glamourpuss, and also back issues of Epic comics there. Judenhass too.

The owner loves Batman, and Cave Comics has a nice collections of sketches from different artists offering their vision of the Caped Crusader. There is a Bernie Wrightson one, a Michael Kaluta one, a John Byrne one, a Walt Simonson one, and of course Dave's! It LOOKS like Dave was working with a pastel or chalk pencil rather than the usual sort.

Here is a link to Cave's website. The photos it has of the interior are of the new building. The wall of sketches had not been fully set up at the time they put the pictures on the website; you can see the wall behind the cash register looks empty in those photos, but now, that is where the Cerebus Batman hangs, staring you down as you stand at the cash register.
