New old Dave art?

Hi, Everybody!

Last week when I ran the anniversary of Gerhard finishing his work on the monthly Cerebus book, I ran an image that Ger was particularly proud of. Damian said he couldn't see it. I fixed it, but here it is again:

Say, who wants to see some new old Dave art?

There's old Dave. And his new art.

What are these?
So, that's a thing that's gonna happen.

But just for Margaret and Jen:

That's right, those are Strange Death of Margaret Mitchell The Strange Death of Alex Raymond pages.

And look at Dave's feet:

Okay, see ya tomorrow for the AMOC year end round-up...

Anxiety Society (Dave's weekly update #519)

Hi, Everybody!

It occurs to me that not everybody checks AMOC daily (sometimes hourly)...

So, I'm going to start a new format for the Friday posts (since I believe people check these more often). Like it says on the Logo:

It's Friday, so that means:
Dave's Weekly Update:

You can NOT get a copy from Lee's Bandcamp. Lee how can they get a copy?
_______________________________________
A Moment of Cerebus runs Saturday through Friday. If you DON'T check AMOC daily

The Week in AMOC:
  • Saturday: I talked about the ending of Form & Void
  • Sunday: I celebrated twenty years since Gerhard finished his work on the Cerebus monthly book
  • Monday: Christmas! (No Monday Report because it WAS Christmas.)
  • Tuesday: Jen's got personal issues, so a quick update on The Strange Death of Alex Raymond Go Fund Me. $200 until the next page is unlocked. And Dave's finished drawing page 578. (Maybe even 579. THAT I haven't heard yet.)
  • Wednesday: Hobbs has a personal issue, but he let everybody know that MarvelManVark is in stores

This is the LAST monthly Cerebus in Hell? book. Due to Hobbs' issue, and David Birdsong having a person issue (yeah, it seems like we ALL have issues these days...) Cerebus in Hell? is changing to a "When-an-issue-is-done-it's-going-on-Kickstarter-and-we'll-throw-it-at-Diamond-when-we-get-a-chance" format.

Speaking of which, Akimbo is getting Kickstartered in January (the 17th, I believe). You can read the issue here, if you wanna see if it's your cup o' tea.

As far as Aardvark-Vanaheim and Diamond goes, you can order a copy of the New AV Book:

Just so you can't say I never told you.
  • Thursday: After Dave's answer in the last Please Hold For Dave Sim, Margaret continues looking at Notebook #1 (AKA Albatross One). Speaking of Thursdays and Please Hold For Dave Sim, Dave and I are going to be doing the FIRST Please Hold for Dave Sim of 2024 on Thursday of next week. If you want in, please get your questions in to momentofcerebus@gmail.com by Wednesday when I send the fax.
  • Friday: that's this post. You're reading the Friday post right now. This is like that bit in Spaceballs.
Okay, so that was the past week in AMOC. You're welcome.

Notebook One - Cerebus #20 Material Part Two?

MARGARET LISS:

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

As we continued on our journey of looking at the pages from Dave Sim’s first notebook, aka Albatross One, last week with pages 4, 5, and 6 this week will not be page 7 as you might of think.  We’ve already looked at page 7 in Notebook Pages on Mind Game. While page 6 only went over some of page one of Cerebus #20, it did mention Perce the Cirinist along with some of what Cirinists believe.

And with all this talk of Mind Games look what starts on page 8 of the notebook – if you guess Mind Game’s planning, you’d be correct (and yes, click the pictures to enlarge them):

Notebook 1, page 8

And Cerebus #20 does start like this – with the two Cirinists discussing how Cerebus will see things in the form of symbols and how they need to be reading the card while talking to him. The line ‘Cerebus didn’t meditate Cerebus has been drugged’ made it in the issue as well.

On page 9 the dialogue between Cerebus and Po shows up:

Notebook 1, page 9

As you can see, near the middle of the page, the dialogue splits on the two sides of the page. On the left is the dialogue between Cerebus and Po and on the right side is the dialogue between Pearce and Wenda, the two Cirinists. This mimics the layout of the dialogue in Mind Game with the different characters. The dialogue is very similar to the finished dialogue as well.

And as you’d expect the next page is just another wall of text. More dialogue for Cerebus #20:

Notebook 1, page 10

It starts at the top with Po’s dialogue about looking for a book that would help Cerebus talk with the Cirinists. The line “The rebirth is at hand” makes it into the final pages. The bit about the color being gold didn’t show up as far as I can see.

Merry Christmas!

Hi, Everybody!

So Birdsong sent me:
Hey Matt,
Ever wonder what Beer looks like in a Christmas sweater? Wonder no more.
Birdsong

 I sent him back this:

Merry Christmas Everybody!

Sunday 24 December 2023

It was twenty years ago today...

Hi, Everybody!

Guess what?

It was twenty years ago TODAY!

"Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play?"

No Imaginary AMOC Reader who lives rent free in my head, Sgt. Pepper's came out in 1967, so twenty years before that is 1947, and Math isn't my strong suit, but 2023 minus 1947 ain't in the twenties...

THIS happened:
I asked Gerhard about it:
So, I just celebrated the 12th anniversary of AMOC, and the 6th anniversary of my taking over, but I realized that next month is the 20th anniversary of you and Dave finishing Cerebus (I believe yours's is around Christmas.) With that in mind, I thought I'd make a big deal out of it. My question is what is your favorite page (or series of pages) from issue #300? (Bonus points for why?)
And Ger said:
I guess my favourite (or least hated) part of #300 is the 'falling out of bed' sequence.
This panel in particular:
Why?
I like the balance of black/white/grey
and it has this real 'frozen moment' quality.

Least favourite/most hated part was the fifty-seven versions we went through of the cover trying to get the rays of light to look right.
Never really nailed it. Just ran out of time.
And patience.

As always, Thank You Gerhard!

And Boys and Girls, tonight is the night!

I hope you've been good. Otherwise The Big Guy won't be heading your way, OR bringing the Missus:

The Strange Death of Cerebus part 2: Form & Void

Hi, Everybody!

So when I was filling in for Jen on Tuesday, I talked about Cerebus' death and Square One.

Well, at the end of Form & Void, this happens:

Now in the notes, Dave talks about how Cerebus is performing the traditional Hebrew mourning rituals of rending your clothes and covering your face in ashes.

And I'm not denying that, but there's other layers going on as well.

On one level, Jaka is enacting Cerebus' march from Minds when he was on Pluto:

(Which Cerebus reenacted in Going Home:)
On another level, as the Cerebus/Jaka relationship goes the way "Dave" prophesized it would in Minds, Cerebus covering his face with dirt is also an inversion of the Square One Motif. Cerebus is trying to go into silhouette. And of course he keeps "going blank" which leads to WHITE panels instead of Black silhouette.

I guess I'll ask Dave about it for the January Please Hold For Dave Sim...
