HEY! Speaking of Kickstarters, Steve Peters' has Dave's Sparkybus as a Variant Cover:

Limited to 50 copies.

But if you don't want a comic, MY prints have been printed, signed, & shipped:

And James Windsor-Smith's Papa Balloon & Cactus #3 ALSO has a Dave Sim Cover Variant:

Both my friends are about halfway to being funded, so if you want some neat comics with a Dave Sim connection, here ya go.
_____________________________________
This ends on Sunday, and I've gotten TWO entries, so they MIGHT both get Original Dave Sim Art...
It's not that hard of a contest to enter, much less win...

New Contest: Fill out the word search, send a copy of your completed entry to momentofcerebus@gmail.com by October first, and you'll be entered into a drawing for a Little Orphan Aardvark prize back! (What's in the prize back? I dunno. I haven't figured that out yet, but it's GURANTEED to have at least one piece of paper with Daddy Varkbucks signature on it (it'll say "Dave Sim", not "Daddy Varkbucks", but you get the idea...) (The piece of paper could be anything. A vintage Cerebus comic, a promotional postcard, original art, anything! Ya know...that Dave has sent me and is in the AMOC Prize drawer...). Plus a L.O.A.S.S. entry kit for those not in the wordsearch. Maybe FIVE American dollars... The possibilities are nearly endless (the actualities are not.). )

RULES (Read these carefully, ya don't want to be a Seiler and end up disqualified...):
  1. Fill out the wordsearch.
  2. Send it to momentofcerebus@gmail.com
  3. 1 (one) point each for each name on the list found
  4. 5 (five) points for any word NOT on the list found. (MINIMUM THREE LETTERS! "BE" won't get you shit. Ya gotta put in a little effort. ALSO: Real verifiable words only. (Although ya may get extra points if you find "Kwyjibo"...)
  5. Bonus 50 (fifty) points if you can identify WHO these people actually are (10 (ten) points for a partial list since you guys probably will never guess who Empennage and Sundrop are, I don't even think THEY know...)
  6. Get your entry in by October (10) 1st (first) (That's 10/1/2023 for you guys living in the future...)
  7. After that I'ma take the entries, calculate the points, and highest point total wins the Big Prize, everybody else gets entered into a drawing for a 2nd (second) place prize. Depending on turnout, EVERYBODY might get a prize. Or, if this one actually takes off and more than Zipper and Dodger enter, there might only be 3 (three) prizes.
  8. My decisions are final.
Good luck! And Remember" Aardvark is counting on YOU!

Cerebus #53 - Thumbnails for Pages 16 - 19

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Over the last couple of months we’ve looked at Dave Sim’s notebook pages that have the thumbnails for Cerebus #53. These pages come from Dave’s sixth notebook which covers Cerebus #49 through 59. Today we pick up with page 48 as that has the thumbnail for page 16 of Cerebus #53.

Notebook #6, page 48

Last week we left off with page 45 of the notebook. I’ve skipped, for now, page 46 and 47 as they mainly Wolveroach issue stuff. So they’ll wait until we’ve looked at all the pages with thumbnails for Cerebus #53.

The dialogue surrounding the thumbnail for page 16 is pretty much the same on the finished page. Except for seeing Cerebus’ writing we just get Dave’s note “Writing ‘On Governing’”.

Cerebus #53 page 16 and thumbnail, click to embiggen

A sketch of Artemis Strong as Wolveroach with some really elongated boot thingies. If you’ve noticed, Dave has been writing down the pages he has left in the issue on the page as well, with the numbers for pages 17 – 20 visible.

We skip page 49 as it is more Wolveroach issue items, and go to page 50 which has three page thumbnails: pages 17, 18, and 10:

Notebook #6, page 50

The dialogue along the side of the page is what appears on the finished page. Well, except the Countess saying ‘Terim’s blood’ on page 19.

Lining up pages 17 and 18 to their thumbnails from the 6th notebook, we can see the panel breakdown is the same and the character placement is just a bit different. For so few lines in the thumbnails, it amazes me how I can still follow along and know which character is which and get a sense of what is happening on the pages.

Cerebus #53 page 17 & 18 and their thumbnails, click to embiggen

Same with page 19 and its thumbnail. Dave penciling in CRASH in the thumbnail helps, but we can still see the flow of the page just from a tiny thumbnail in the notebook.

Cerebus #53 page 19 and thumbnail, click to embiggen

And yes, next week will be our last look at the thumbnails for Cerebus #53 when we look at page 51 and the thumbnail for page 20. Which also includes a thumbnail for Cerebus #54’s cover.

SDoAR 39: Researching Georgia License Plates from 1949

While September has been an extremely quiet month for the Strange Death of Alex Raymond GoFundMe campaign, it's been pretty busy for me whilst I conduct research for Dave on upcoming SDOAR pages.

  • Georgia license plates circa 1949.
  • The view from the backseat looking through the front windscreen of a 1949 Ford Sedan.
  • Options for the car in front of Hugh Gravitt on the day Margaret Mitchell was struck by his car.
  • Multiple angles from behind of aforementioned car in front of Hugh Gravitt.
  • The street view, visibility and horizon of Peachtree Avenue NE from 13th Street facing 14th Street.

Good thing I'm as OCD as Dave is! That said, I'm still on the road for another week (see what I did there?), but have computer, will continue reviewing files for the Giant-Size Ashcans.

On the bright side, I added four more preview pages below for folks to see an extended preview of what is on Dropbox for people who do support the GoFundMe.

How can you support this effort? Well, by donating here >> https://www.gofundme.com/f/sdoar-2023 and helping to unlock the next page, only $129.00 from the next $200 goal.

SDOAR Pages, Part V

21 preview pages in toto. Part IPart IIPart IIIPart IV; and Part V is below!

Reminder: These images are *neither* the restored *nor* the remastered pages, just what I cleaned up as lo-res files for Dropbox. Philip R. Frey's cleanup work for the Giant-Size Ashcans is SO much better!

GFM Tote Board

  • *ZERO* new pages unlocked since last week.
  • $9071.00 raised from 143 donations (plus $62.08 outside of GoFundMe).
  • 49 new pages released as mocked up by Dave Sim from 11 June to 26 October 2021
  • 70 total pages available on Dropbox, including Dave's 2019 mocked-up pages
  • Only $129.00 away from unlocking page 71
  • If you have not donated >> $5+ donation grants access to all 70 pages and all pages moving forward!
  • If you have donated (thanks!!) >> GoFundMe does not have an option for monthly subscriptions. So if you want to donate on a monthly basis, please do so as we at the end of month #9.

Last Chance for Classic Cerebus Shirts?

Hi, Everybody!

So, yesterday when I posted this photo:

I meant to make a comment about the early Cerebus shirt.
Yeah, that one.

Anyway, I was gonna post a link to where you can get one of them, but apparently Graphitti Designs website is only for high end books now.

I DID manage to find backdoor links to where you can get the Cerebus merch Graphitti Designs produced:
Cerebus For Dictator (Small and Medium only)
Cerebus He Doesn't love you (Small and Medium only)
Young Cerebus pin
It'll let me put them in my cart, but since I own all the pins, and I'm not a Small or Medium, I don't need any of this, but if you do, and you try to buy them and it fails miserably, let me know at momentofcerebus@gmail.com.

I'll probably ask Dave if he's even heard from Graphitti Designs (or gotten paid) in the last few years, when we talk next week for The October 2023 Please Hold For Dave Sim, which is being recorded on the day Steve Peters Tails of Sparky #4 Kickstarter ends (Oct. 5th).

James Windsor-Smith's new Papa Balloon and Cactus issue with the Dave variant cover, currently getting Kickstartered.

Look at Dave...He sits there alone...An abject figure. "I abject!"

Hi, Everybody!

So, unless something drastic happens, Dave's gonna be calling me next Thursday.

"Wait. Before October? Two times in a month?"

No, not THIS week Thursday, Next week Thursday. October, fifth. Which is when Steve Peters' new Kickstarter for Tails of Sparky #4 ends. Will we be discussing that? Probably, unless you send questions to momentofcerebus@gmail.com, I have a few questions, but not two hours worth. So Steve will most likely get a bit of the call. Again, unless you step up with YOUR questions. We'll talk about anything. Maybe James Windsor-Smith's new Papa Balloon and Cactus issue with the Dave variant cover, currently getting Kickstartered. I mean, ANYTHING could happen.

We'll most likely mention DJ Inzeo who managed to nap this The Last Day panoramic remarque for $10 CAD

He emailed me:
Thank you,

and sorry to steal this so cheap

How would you like me to pay? Donation to the cerebusdownloads page?
DJ Inzeo
Yes DJ, you can pay the TEN CANADIAN DOLLARS you won it for there. And YES, you did kinda "steal" it, didn't you?
I mean...think of POOR Dave.

Think of Poor Dave:
Who didn't even own a shirt until issue #7 was published...

Yes...spare a thought for Poor ol' Dave...
Who didn't even have pants before that...

Poor ol' Dave, who's apartment was at a forty-five degree angle like on the sixties Batman:
LOOK! He's hanging onto that counter for dear life!

The whole damn apartment:
Thank God for that heavy chair...

Yes, life was rough for Poor Ol' Dave. Why if a famous Writer wasn't hustlin' his chick:

Ted Baxter was:

Yes Poor Ol' Dave. Who SLAVED to make his funnybook, and deal with the unintended consequences that wrought:
"We're ALL a little BUGGY here..."

Poor Ol' Dave...who even after he could afford a shirt and pants still didn't have SHOES!
"Shoeless Dave Sim" it's how he was credited in all his NON-Cerebus work until 1987.
(It's TRUE, you could look it up...)

Poor Ol' Dave, who had to supplement his income ANY way he could...
Interpretive Dance paid surprising well...

Yes, please DJ, think of Poor. Ol'. Dave. And the tragedy that is his life. And maybe throw a couple of extra bucks his way when you pay for your The Last Day at cerebusdownloads.
I mean it wasn't ALL bad, sometimes there was cake. (Of course, it slid off the table thanks to the forty-five degree angle...)

Yes Dj, think of Poor Ol' Dave, with his bum hand and 900 plus unsold copies of The Last Day.
And his many mouths to feed...

Think back on the Good Times (when he was making $75 Canadian Dollars a month (Sixty-five MORE than the measly $10 you've pledged for a book he was selling for $90.) selling records in the basement of Harry's book shop):
"Hi, are you Harry?"

Yes, spare a Moment (heh.) for Poor Ol' Dave, if you could...
