Notebook 21: All Stories Are True

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Notebook 21: Skulls and Alan Moore

Last week it was pages of text of Viktor just rambling, and guess what? Yes, more of his rambling. What is he thinking? We don’t need to ask, he just won’t stop rambling on and on. . .

Anyhoo, yes, you guessed it, more of Viktor’s ramblings. You can see Dave’s edits of crossing stuff out, writing more thoughts in the margins, et al. And like you, I don’t have the energy to go through it this week. So instead of me rambling, you’ll get five – yes FIVE! – pages for the low low price of nothing.

Another outline for Cerebus #182, but at least it isn’t a wall of text – don’t worry, more of them coming up. Looks like Dave did some shuffling of the materials for Cerebus #182. Though if you’ve noticed, this list is only for the materials in the Viktor Davis’ story, and not the Cerebus vs  Cirin fight that starts off the issue. Well, technically the issue starts with the Roach in his Destiny Forty Thousand Eyes Roach ™.

Well, except item number 5, “Cerebus just had his right ear cut off”. That happens on the last page of the fight in Cerebus #182 page 14, aka Reads page 160.

Though Cerebus’ ear getting cut off also appears in Viktor’s text, on page 16 of that same issue. And that text is what starts off page 208 of the notebook:

While that is close to the finished text on page 162 of Reads, it isn’t the same. Most notably, Viktor mentioning that Elrod never really existed is missing, along with a bunch of discussion about the audience. What are you thinking?

Another “quick” – well, for me. If you’re reading all the small text on these notebook pages, which yes, you can click on to enlarge them and read Dave’s notes yourself, then it’ll take you a while – notebooks post as it has been a heck of a 1.25 year. 

If that 182 issue box number looks familiar, you’ve got a decent memory for it appeared already in this same notebook, on page 186 shown in the post from last month called Notebook 21: Cerebus 182 & Viktor Davis.

We can see that Dave is continuing to edit Viktor’s diatribe about whatever is on his mind because “What are you thinking about?” And Viktor sure loves to tell us what he is thinking about. Including TMNT? Well, perhaps they don’t exist in Estarcion. Or at least Viktor’s version of it.

Got all excited last week with that Minds logo. . .and then just more Viktor Davis lamenting about how people want to know what he is thinking so he proceeds to ramble at length. . .which we’ll be getting more of. . .and so I got to thinking: just how much more?

Since we starting the “nothing but Notebook #21” last June (yes, it has been a year!), there are now 199 pages of this notebook posted to AMoC. That is 77% of the notebook. . .how much of that has been just over the last year? Yah, yah, ask me to do math. Ugh. Lets see. . .I dunno. It is more trying to separate out the prior stuff from the “since June of 2025” stuff and that is too much work. 

So lets just focus on the positives: only 23% of the notebook’s pages left to see here on the bloggity blog. That is 61 pages left to see and if we do 4 pages a day, than that is 16 more weeks of posts. 

I think I’ve. . .WE’VE got this. And this week’s four pages are more of Viktor rambling on about his audience some more:

The formatting is taking on more of the Reads look with the first letter a bigger and boxed in, the paragraphs!, and the fun swirly mark separating sections of text. And yes, it is a rehashing of the text we saw in last week’s post.

Viktor asking Estarcion’s Neil Gaiman: “Do you believe in magic, boy?” And Neil’s response: “There’s . . .something . . .there.” 

Such a perfect time to mention the magic of aardvarks. . .I’d like to hear Estarcion Neil Gaiman’s thoughts on the magic in Estarcion. . .I know I know “autobiography”, not really, but yes.

Well, what do we have here? A Minds logo? An issue box number for Cerebus #187? Are we finally done with Viktor Davis?

The text below the issue number box seems to be tilted towards the content of Minds, the "only gradual absorption into a powerful orbit of mindless decay.” The text above Minds also seems geared towards Minds, “The best a creator can do is to try and understand his own creator.”

The next page has what appears to be some thoughts and connections being made. Though, “Men are furnaces”? Umm.

And since only two pages of barely any content. . .I know you’re all clamoring for more walls of text. So without further ado, more Viktor Davis – “what are you thinking”, well, Viktor won’t stop talking about what he is thinking about:

That is an interesting quote on the above page, “You’ve known instinctively that there is nothing certain in these pages for some time now. . .You don’t know where I’m taking you. . .Cerebus is an hermaphrodite. Elrod never existed. Cerebus just had his ear cut off. Cerebus be all right, right? His name’s on the cover, right? A hundred and eighteen issues to go, right?”

July. All the way out in here. I ended up spending a couple of days in the Psych Ward at K-W Hospital. Couldn’t sleep. Speaking in strange voices. One word at a time. One word at a time. Can you stop? Stop reading I mean.”

“Maybe the question isn’t what sort of person would do this. Maybe the question is what sort of person follows a person like this around for years on end.”

Lots of walls of text. It is interesting if you can read Dave’s handwriting. Always makes me chuckle that the best letter in comics has handing writing that while better than a doctor’s is to the point that some folk could have trouble parsing it. 

But I digress (RIP Peter David). 

Notice on this next page in the notebook in the second paragraph Dave crossed out Reid and wrote Davis. Viktor takes the audience down a concealed flight of stairs and we see ‘Gerhard’:

In case you can’t read it:

At the bottom of the stairs he had paused and was looking to his right. 

‘Gerhard’ he said in a whisper, pointing across a darkened living room studio in the direction of the dining room area. There was a squeaking sound of someone shifting his weight on a chair that badly needed oiling. Discernable on the wall were four rows of pages. The seventh, and the fifteenth through the twentieth were blank. ‘He’s doing the background on page seven of the part you just read.’ Pointing to the bottom row he added. ‘That’s us down there.’

He flashed another grin. ‘Weird, eh?!’

Down the bottom of the page – the crossed out material – is Viktor talking about how he thinks it was Neil Gaiman who said that all writers are liars. Or all stories are lies. The crossed out material continues onto the next page of the notebook:

This week’s post is labeled #600 in my list of posts. Yes, I’ve done 600 of these notebook posts. One a week – nearly, I probably skipped a week or two or posted something else instead – since 18 June 2014 and the first post, Dave Sim’s Notebooks: Hunters & Gathers.

Nearly 12 years. 600 posts. And we’ve only seen 733 pages out of the possible 3,281 pages. So 22% of Dave’s notebooks. Well, good news is we’ve made it through 72% of Dave’s 21st notebook. Partially because we’re now look at four pages at a time instead of one or two pages. So lets get to it, eh?

First page up is a continuation of the previous page, more of Viktor Davis’ monologue. The stuff crossed out at the end is Viktor sitting in his upstairs office in the quiet watching the snow, the long march across the blank page:

The next page of the notebook has the issue number box for Cerebus #182. Right above it is a list of issue numbers, #180 through 186, and a number to the left of it and some text on the Cirin versus Cerebus fight that runs through those issues. I thought the number corresponded to the amount of pages dedicated to the fight, but it doesn’t hold up except for Cerebus #180 does have 17 pages of the “comic book” part of the issue, while the remaining pages are for the Viktor Davis dialogue.

Guess what is continuing in the notebook? Pages of text for Viktor Davis. We’re getting to some sketches. At some point. Really.

Dave must’ve finished page 176 of his notebook and put it down, for the handwriting style has changed from the prior page. Well, at least at the top of the page. This text is closer to the text that appears in Reads. And this actually shows up on page 161 of Reads, aka Cerebus floppy issue number 182 page 15.

This next page I found interesting because I find it to be True. Not true, but True. I could more pages like this one. Just like I could read three hundred issues of material like Cerebus #244. Well, maybe not 300, but a novel’s worth.

 We finished last week’s entry with some of the last text for Victor Reid and the first text for Viktor Davis. Now we’re continuing with Viktor Davis’ section of Reads. This starts on page 144 of Reads, aka page 18 of Cerebus #181. The following three pages are the preliminary writing for that introduction of Viktor Davis. Yes, it is very different than the finished work. 

In the notebook pages we get a Viktor Davis that is more akin to Dave as we see a story of Viktor hanging out with Gene Day. The text continues on with Gene’s death, the trip to Marvel’s New York city offices, and makes mention of the players there.
