SDoAR 3.24?: Matt Takes Manhattan!

Hi, Everybody!

Jen's living the High Life in Edinburgh.
Jen's doing her One Woman show Woman in the Arena, pretty much all month. If you go, "swordfish". And send pics...

Before we get to me filling in for her, I got a message from Rolly:
Hi Matt,
Please post on the website. As Larry Shell needs our help again, he is really struggling to make ends meet these days.

Please post as soon as possible. Thanks.

The email is below:
Dear Dave & All Cerebus fans,

I hope you are both doing well and I am sorry to bother you, but I urgently need to raise $450 to pay my Homeowner’s insurance premium to renew my policy on July 30th or it will be cancelled and given the present condition of my house, I would be unable to get any other insurance company to cover me.

I am also still having problems raising funds for my property taxes as well.

I can NOT afford much these days. I do not have any of the funds to pay for it and I am very stressed about this situation.

If you can help me with any amount, $25 - $50 - $100 - and so on, please send it to me asap, so I can get it into my bank account sooner than later to make the payment that is due.

You can send it via Zelle, Venmo or PayPal to lawrenceshell@comcast.net and let me know you’ve sent me an email.

You can also use the Go Fund Me page that is still active and taking donations at https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-larry-save-his-home-repair-it .

Any amount would be appreciated and I would be extremely grateful. I am to put it bluntly, desperate at this point.

Please share this with your friends and on any social media you belong to.

Thank you in advance,
Larry Shell

Thanks for your help Matt,
Rolly
So, if you can spare a few bucks to help a guy out. Please do.

SPEAKING of donating a few bucks to help a guy out...

Just the GoFundMe Facts, Ma'am

  • $18,500.00 raised to date from 326 donations
  • 116 pages released so far as mocked up and/or drawn by Dave Sim through 21 Jan 2022.
  • $100.00 away from unlocking page 117

As Jen has copy/pasted from her last post:
3) The next raffle is for a full-page Silverspoon strip from The Buyer's Guide for Comic Fandom #321, January 11, 1980. These are really hard to come by so, I hope everyone considers joining the raffle. Speaking of which ...
4) Last time I posted, I discussed raffle tickets were going to go for $5 a pop and no one complained, so let it be written, so let it be done. I also mentioned that all donations since the last raffle will be included, meaning we have 97 raffle tickets sold so far. If we break 150 tickets, I'll toss another Silverspoon page into the bucket.
And Jen always says:

The Strange Death of Alex Raymond New Mockups Preview

If you haven't read The Strange Death of Alex Raymond before, we have an eight-page trailer that Dave did back in 2018: Part One | Part Two

Then the Dave Sim portion of the hardcover, presented four pages at a time:

And this.

If you want to see how Carson Grubaugh finished the hardcover, well, you're going to need to purchase a copy of your own. HOWEVER, if you want to see how Dave Sim continued the story in the blue pages -- bring me the blue pages -- mockups that appeared in blue ink in final section of the hardcover can be found here...

This,
This, and this.

Then in June 2021, Dave picked up the story again and it continues herehereherehere, and here.

If you enjoy the journey, you can join us for all the new pages on Dropbox by donating $5 or more.

Well, I mean that COULD be a "Moment"...

Let's see what else I got...

Cerebus in Hell? has an Instagram:
https://www.instagram.com/cerebusinhell/

Cerebus In Hell? has arrived on Instagram. Weekly strips will begin in August. Expect the Dave Sim technology effect to shut down Instagram very soon, but in the meantime we hope to make you grin a little with a weekly strip to keep Cerebus In Hell? in front of your face while we strive to put out physical issues as the economy allows. Yee Haw, folks, if we can't sell this shit we'll just give it away online.

Aardvark Vanaheim, annoying you with comics since 1977
More on this on the other days I don't have to post...

What else is there?

Sean Robinson (remember when Sean was teaching us how to remaster Cerebus?) sent in:
In a letter to Joe Matt (!!), Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo calls Cerebus the Fugazi of Comics and refers to his current Pinkerton writing as the Peepshow of music!

And for 1998 or whatever, he ain't wrong!

His handwriting looks like someone who has labored over a few hundred pages of journeyman indie comics...
I dunno, looks like Joe Matt lettering to me...

Sean explained to the Braintrust who were discussing this:
Fugazis Ian McKay famously ran his own label and even distributed his own label. Was a huge advocate of DIY for both ethical and financial reasons. I would imagine that's the aspect he's referring to although I could see some hidden aesthetic comparisons as well.

At the time of him writing this letter there was a current Weezer album named Pinkerton which is in my opinion they're very best work. Includes a song that has the chorus quote "I'm so tired of having sex so tired.". Super confessional album compared to their other stuff, I'm sure that's the point of comparison here.

Okay, it's my day off, and these tacos ain't gonna make themselves. Be nice to each other. PLEASE help out Larry Shell if you can. And because she'll go "full Kurgan" if I don't say it again:

Next Time: Hobbs. Because I don't "do" Wednesdays...

Chester Brown: "Daniel Read"

Paid For It (2016)
by 'Chesty Matt' aka Joe Matt
(being a satire of Chester Brown's "Paying For It")

Daniel Read
by Chester Brown
(first posted on Patreon, 27 May 2017)

In response to my Sex-Work Pride piece (April 15th, reposted on A Moment Of Cerebus on April 17th), Sean Michael Robinson posted (on A-M-O-C) an anti-prostitution article by Daniel Read. I posted a short assessment of the article on May 1st, which was reposted on A-M-O-C on May 2nd. Read saw it there and responded in the comments section.

I noted that one of his sources — Melissa Farley — has been discredited. Read half-heartedly defends Farley — who is an academic — by putting down the source I linked to: Maggie McNeill. Read tries to invalidate Maggie’s perspective by noting that she’s not an academic. That is correct; while Maggie did receive a university education (and worked for a while as a librarian), she is not an academic. She’s a sex-worker and has been one for many years. Thinking that Farley knows more about sex-work than Maggie is just ridiculous. Farley’s interviewed some sex-workers, but Maggie knows the business inside-out and has many sex-worker friends (and fans) all over the world. Maggie is obviously going to be much more knowledgable on the subject than Farley. As for my charge that Farley has been discredited: once the courts start to dismiss an academic's “research” as being too biased to be useful, I’d say it’s fair to say that that academic been discredited. (Here’s the link again to Maggie’s piece on Farley, which includes a quote from Justice Susan Himel of the Ontario Superior Court on why she considered Farley’s work to be of little substance.)

Apparently Read worships academics and doesn’t recognize that they’re humans who are capable of being biased, making mistakes, and even lying. Do academics know more about the professions they study than the people who are in those professions? If an academic claimed to understand cartooning better than I do, I’d be sceptical.

As for Read’s other sources: point-for-point, Read’s statistics are countered by Maggie’s. Anyone who thinks Read’s partisan stats are convincing really should look at the other side’s numbers.

“Vapid” and “semantic” are the words that Read uses to characterize the idea that there’s a difference between legalizing sex-work and decriminalizing it. It’s not a semantic matter to prostitutes.

All of the legalization systems that I’m aware of have required that prostitutes register with the government for a licence. All people engaged in the work without a licence would be breaking the law. In the 1960s homosexuality was decriminalized in Canada — one didn’t need a licence to engage in gay sex, one just needed the consent of an adult partner. What if, instead of decriminalizing homosexuality, the government had legalized it, requiring gay people to acquire licences to have gay sex. Homosexuality was heavily stigmatized. (It still is stigmatized, but the stigma was much more intense in the 60s.) A lot of gays would not have wanted to go to a government office to admit their private sex-life to some bureaucrat. Could they trust that the law wasn’t going to change? Could they trust that the information would be secure? No, if the Canadian government had legalized homosexuality in the 1960s, most gay people would not have registered for licences, and so they would have continued to be criminals for engaging in consensual sex.

Sex-work is as stigmatized now as homosexuality was back in the 1960s. In regions where governments have legalized sex-work, the majority of the workers have refused to register for licences. The result is that a few workers are legal and the majority are still working illegally and are subject to the dangers of working illegally, including the greater likelihood of encountering violence.

Many years ago I asked Denise if she would get a licence if sex-work was legalized. Of course she said no. And why should she? It’s none of the government’s business what she and I do in the privacy of her bedroom — we’re not hurting anyone. The negative consequences of requiring prostitutes to have licences outweigh any potential benefits. Indeed, I don’t even see any benefits.

Decriminalization would allow any adult who wants to engage in sex-work to be able to do so without needing anyone’s permission. And it would allow anyone to pay such a sex-worker for consensual activities. In other words, sex-for-pay should be like all other sex — you should need the consent of your sexual partner (or partners) and that’s the only person (or people) you should need consent from. On the other hand, legalization requires sex-workers and their clients to also get the consent of the government. That’s a big difference, not an inconsequential one as Read seems to think.

Read chides me for ignoring the part of his article that dealt with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the supposed widespread “trafficking” of eastern European women that resulted. I ignored it because, from a 2017 Canadian (and American) perspective, it’s irrelevant to the subjects of decriminalizing sex-work and the morality of the profession. The majority of sex-workers in Canada are not from the former U-S-S-R and have not been forced into the work. Criminalizing ALL prostitution because a small number of prostitutes have been forced into it makes no sense. Police should endeavour to identify who has been forced into the work, punish whoever did the forcing, and leave willing sex-workers and their clients alone.

In my May 1st post, I wrote this about Read’s piece:
“Read’s article boils down to a familiar argument: because SOME prostitutes SOMETIMES encounter violence, ALL prostitution is wrong. Why is it wrong in instances where there’s no violence or force? Read avoids that question, no doubt because he doesn’t have an answer for it.”
Read avoided answering that question in his article, and he avoided answering it when I directly posed it, even though he saw that I’d posed it. I’d say that pretty much proves that he doesn’t have a rational explanation for his negative opinion of sex-work.

/////////////////////////////

In my May 1st post I asked the A-M-O-C anti-prostitutionists who think all prostitution is morally wrong to explain what’s morally wrong about about my sex-for-pay relationship with Denise. Most of the A-M-O-C anti-prostitutionists ignored the question. Perhaps they’ve gotten bored with the discussion, but I suspect that they don’t have an answer to the question. Only the individual going by the name A Fake Name addressed the question. He-or-she writes:
“[I]f you and her [sic] have found a way this works and are both happy, then I’m glad for you, as glad as I can be for someone I’ve never met. I’m not condemning your relationship.”
On April 20th at 19:38 A Fake Name wrote that “paying/charging for sex is pathetic/scummy.” On May 4th at 19:58 A Fake Name wrote that sex-work is “damaging in the long term for both men and women.” A Fake Name WAS condemning my relationship with Denise — he-or-she called it pathetic, scummy, and damaging. If A Fake Name genuinely thinks there’s no problem with my sex-for-pay relationship with Denise, then he-or-she is either contradicting him-or-herself or he-or-she has changed his-or-her mind on the matter. (And, of course, there’s nothing wrong with changing one’s opinion, but A Fake Name doesn’t seem to be acknowledging that that’s what he-or-she is doing.)

If someone wrote that gay people are pathetic, scummy, and damaged, almost everyone would recognize that person as a homophobe. If someone wrote that black people are pathetic, scummy, and damaged, almost everyone would recognize that person as a racist. A Fake Name has a prejudice, and so do the other anti-prostitutionists on A-M-O-C, and so does Daniel Read.

Getting Riel With Chester Brown: Postscript

Getting Riel
Chester Brown discusses his graphic novel, Louis Riel, with Dave Sim

Mary Wept Over The Feet Of Jesus
by Chester Brown
(Drawn & Quarterly, 2016)

DAVE SIM:
(from comments posted on AMOC, 19 April 2016)
There was a full-page article/review of Chester [Brown]'s new book [Mary Wept Over The Feet Of Jesus] in the NATIONAL POST that I was going to make reference to at some point, at the end of the first column of which David Berry announced that Chester is the ONLY person to do religious commentary in a comic book. But then, I just thought, Why bother? I already know how the discussion is going to go on AMOC. Chester Brown GOOD Dave Sim EVIL as opposed to the tenor of the article: Chester Brown GOOD Dave Sim NON-EXISTENT.

Yes I do think that demonic possession exists and that it's the same as it's been since Biblical times, "we"'ve just decided to call it by other names. It's particularly noticeable for someone like myself who prays five times a day, reads Scripture aloud and fasts most days (and 24 hours on Sunday). For ME, that's just basic self-protection. It's pretty apparent what a complete LACK of self-protection looks like. I definitely don't look at people who don't protect themselves and go "Wow! They're so carefree and happy! I must be seriously deluded!"

There comes a point where you just accept that you're not getting a fair hearing and that you won't get a fair hearing in a world where a major cartooning presence like Chester Brown is, basically, saying that Jesus agrees with him that prostitution is a good thing. Canada has certainly opted for Chester Brown's view of prostitution THAT isn't considered misogynistic or... anything pejorative.

I think two things worth pointing out: 1) Chester, according to Joe Matt, mischaracterized Joe's disapproval of Chester's whore-mongering as "Joe is too cheap to pay for a prostitute". That may be true, but in all of the conversations that Joe and Chester and I had, Joe's objections were always on moral grounds. Chester did the same thing with me: mischaracterizing my disapproval as being "Dave doesn't believe that women should have jobs." [Interview: A John's Gospel, TCJ.com, 9 May 2011] I definitely don't believe that 86% of women working outside the home is a sensible... or sustainable... percentage but -- like Joe Matt -- I just think that prostitution is morally wrong. And that's certainly what I always said to Chester. "You CAN'T believe that prostitution is harmless or, even worse, beneficial." He definitely did. I would clip and mail articles to him about prostitution when they appeared in the NATIONAL POST -- pro and con -- because I wanted to help with his research. What he did with it was up to him.

The 2) thing is that Chester is definitely one of the most -- if not THE most -- unique whore-mongers on the planet, as far as I'm concerned. I infer from the reviews and commentaries on PAYING FOR IT that people sent to me that Chester is continuing in his relationship (or "relationship" or Relationship) with his favourite prostitute and that they have now become virtually an old, settled, married couple.

I know at the time that Chester and I were hanging out that she would bake him cookies for Christmas, so it isn't a COMPLETELY one-sided thing.

Personally, I wouldn't be wanting to defend that on Judgement Day, but I'll be very interested to see how that does "shake out" on Judgement Day.

And I can certainly admire Chester for his advocacy (as I understand it): that if more men treated prostitutes the way they do a girlfriend or a wife that they cherish -- as Chester definitely cherished and cherishes his favourite prostitute -- the world in general and the world of prostitution specifically would probably be improved. Or be made less unhappy (not necessarily the same thing).

I don't agree and, as far as I know, Joe Matt doesn't agree, but there you go.

From The Archive: Joe Matt's Poor Bastard

DAVE SIM:
Treasures of the Cerebus Archive -- THE POOR BASTARD by Joe Matt. This was during the period after I broke up with Susan (2/98) and I thought it would be interesting to go to Toronto and hang out with Joe, Chester and Seth (this was before they made it clear that they thought I was a misogynist).

And it WAS interesting: like walking into a live version of a Drawn & Quarterly comic book. Joe isn't really a drinker but I was buying (because I was the only drinker at the table) so there was a genuine conflict for him there: not really being inclined to drink alcohol vs. getting expensive things to drink for free. It's like the old Jack Benny routine where the hold-up guy says, "Your money or your life" and you have the longest silence in radio show history. Then the hold-up guy says, "WELL?" And Benny says "I'm THINKING! I'm THINKING!"

Silverspoon

Cerebus: Silverspoon #1 of 11
(Buyers Guide For Comic Fandon, 1980)
Art by Dave Sim
DAVE SIM:
(from the Q&A at Cerebus Yahoo Group)
...Joe Matt... suggested that he and Chester Brown should re-read all of Cerebus because I was coming down to visit reasonably often and, basically, Joe's just like that. Pull out a chessboard at lunch. "Let's play chess." Uh, I'd really rather just talk, Joe. "No, let's play chess. C'mon. I'll let you be white." Most of the time you just give in because it's easier than discussing it for an hour or something. So, they both re-read Cerebus. And one of the things Chet wanted to know about was "Why aren't the Silverspoon strips reprinted in the Cerebus volume?" And I said, they are. And he said, mm, not in my copy. Really? And I went home and checked and sure enough, he was right. They weren't in there. One of those "I must've dreamed that last part" moments (apologies to Fat Freddy's Cat).

So, I made a note to put them into the next reprinting, having wrestled with whether or not to promote it as such, since that would seem like I was conniving to find a way to get everyone to buy another copy even though I was aware that a certain number of people would buy another copy. The Silverspoon strips I tend to see as being in a different category because without them Lord Julius just suddenly appears in the story with no explanation...

Photorealism: "Why Would You Even Bother Doing This?"

Glamourpuss #20 (July 2011)
Art by Dave Sim
DAVE SIM:
(from the 100 Hour Tour: Comics Village, 21 February 2008)
...Even as I was conceiving of glamourpuss, talking it over with Chester Brown particularly, there was a definite sense of "Why would you even bother doing this? Go with the flow. Do a cartoony Dave Sim autobio graphic novel." And I don't mean just from Chester, Joe Matt said basically the same thing about the COLLECTED LETTERS 2 cover when he was up from LA for TCAF and I showed it to him at The Beguiling. He couldn't have hated it more if it was a guy's face in one of his dubbed porno tapes. But when he saw the Kirby Monster I did as a benefit for the Doug Wright Awards? "See, you're really good at this...you should do more stuff like this." I had talked to Chester about it on the phone ("I told Seth I'm doing a Kirby Monster and he's doing one, too") so I got off the phone and three hours later I had a full colour 11x17 Kirby Monster. Coming off all the photorealism stuff I was doing it was like leaving the NHL and playing road hockey for the night. No precision necessary. Going from a situation where a few microns difference in placement of a model's eye can be the difference between "Sweet!" and "Dude, yechh -- what's up with her left eye" to "This is roughly where the eye goes -- could be off by an eighth of an inch but, hey, it's a Kirby Monster. If it's too symmetrical, if the ink line is too clean or sharply defined, if the feathering all goes the same way it's going to look like an illustrator trying to "fix" Kirby.

Joe Matt

Cerebus #287 (February 2003)
Art by Dave Sim & Gerhard

DAVE SIM:
(from the notes to Latter Days, November 2003)
These are all Mia Farrow's kids, except the last one, Joe Matt Pharaoh. Joe Matt, who appears in several panels as one of the kids (traced from his self-portraits in his comic book, Peepshow, published by Drawn & Quarterly whenever he gets one done - which is a favourite of mine and Gerhard) insisted that I had to put him in the book because I had already done Seth (in Church & State) and Chester Brown (earlier in this book). I mentally slated him to be one of Mia Farrow's kids, whereupon he went off to the San Diego Con last year and met an Asian girl he fell madly in love with, thus putting an "edge" on his appearance in the serialised instalment that I had in no way intended. Fortunately, soon after he moved back to the States to be with her, they broke up, thus removing the "edge" in time for this collected volume.

Chet and Joe were, evidently, talking on the phone when the first appearance of Joe Matt Pharaoh came out:
"Dave put you in Cerebus."
"He did? Why did he do that?"
"You asked him to."
"I did?"
"Yes and he told you you were going to be in the book last time he saw you."
"He did?"
Always a rewarding pleasure to go "out of your way" on Joseph's behalf.
