Well...*that* was interesting. I can't wait until I get all of the printed out pages in the mail. (My old eyes can't read those itty-bitty pages, here.)

I only get a coupla paragraphs on this month's question?!?

Well, then, here's question #2. (I was going to save this to next month, but...):

Okay, Dave, so ... last night, I said to my cat, out loud, because, you know when you live with a cat, that's what you do:

"CAT! You get free food and fresh water every day, a relatively fresh litter box every week, free rent, a warm place to live, a soft place to sleep, high perches, more toys than you can count, and free rein (reign) of the apartment. Yet:

"Why do you feel compelled to bite and scratch me several times, daily."

So, Dave, does that question to my cat remind you of anything in particular? As an analogy, I mean?

And, yes, it's a softball question. You're welcome.

But, really, a year and change in to this social contract with my cat (I adopted him; I'm responsible), I can't *wait* for him to grow up. Again, a familiar analogy?

number two

Q for Dave: As an artist who believes in and strives towards absolute creative freedom what are the challenges you see today for artists who attempt to create and thrive in an increasingly conformist and corporate culture, both in the comics field and society as a whole?

Thank you, Matt.

RSS, if Dave ever does critique an MJ song and/or video I would suggest he do Black or White or History over Thriller, maybe even Childhood or Man in the Mirror. those selections aren’t as popular as Thriller or Beat it, but to me speak more to Jackson’s social concerns than any of his work with Quincy Jones ever did or could.

Brian West said...

One of my favorite lines about MJ was from comedian - and the late Richard Pryor’s comedy writer - Paul Mooney. He always had one good joke about MJ, saying “Mike didn’t molest that boy!”, before hitting the punchline with “Mike ain’t a pedophile, he’s X-Files!” That joke makes me chuckle to no end.

As a another public figure who was celebrated early in his career, yet unfairly maligned later on in it, Michael Jackson might be an ideal subject for Dave to talk about. A critical analysis of Scream or Remember The Time by Dave would be very intriguing to read, I think. Still, that’s of course Dave’s call, not mine.

He might have better ideas about how to use his time than to study or talk ‘80s - 90s pop.

If Dave ever tackled Black or White he should view the UNCENSORED version, with the “Black Panther” coda. I could be wrong but I would guess that Dave might detect the influence of YHWH over MJ in that segment.

RSS, all the cool cats know that Jeffrey Daniel was the innovator and originator of the dance to the moon.

As to Dave imposing his will onto others? Naw, I don’t think he’s a guy who does that. He shares what he thinks about things and let’s individuals decide for themselves how best to engage with what he writes, what he argues. So syncing to his rhythm, though he might suggest it, is not a requirement to engage with him I don’t think. Case in point: https://youtu.be/hnYWCIfMdB0.

- Brian

P.S. You don’t want me to be the guy to lead the dance. This black dude has got no rhythm.

I respect your viewpoint and duly note your observation about not taking things and people entirely at face value, RSS. Good advice that.

Brian West said...

I don’t subscribe to your “situation is good for everyone” scenario, RSS. To use Dave’s aphorism that sentiment is more akin to thinking like Beijing than like Washington, D.C. Everyone has his own approach towards engaging with Dave and his work. Implying that there is one right way to engage with the aforementioned seems more like the Demon Bear mentality than anything that resembles personal liberty.

Even if I were to agree with your scenario, RSS, where does that leave personal liberty, personal responsibility?

I disagree there. My stakes are not your stakes, even if you think they are. Still, I wish you luck in finding what you are looking for yourself.

That’s a 14th Amendment question to the 1st Amendment discussion we’ve been having so far. So, your question, at first glance seems irrelevant here. That being said, I realize that the 14th Amendment has been interpreted more broadly in the past six years by the courts in the USA, to include the LGBTQ community. So, if that is what you might be relying on in your line of reasoning I understand such logic.

First of all, RSS, if you're going to be as obtuse, incoherent, and, generally obnoxious as you have especially been in this thread (and elsewhere), then I would suggest that you have the cajones to post under your real name.

Everyone knows my name and where I reside. Well, in which city. If anyone takes exception to any of my comments (Hi, Damian!), they are welcome to come after me, either online or in person.

Many others here post under their real names (presumably). You (IIRC, and excuse me if I don't) purport to be a "comics insider" and hide behind that to disguise your identity.

I don't mind it when the occasional passerby uses a pseudonym, as he or she is just passing by.

But, here you come, mucking up the comments on a near-daily basis, with your (what I can only assume is) free-form doggerel. It is tiresome.

Secondly; RSS, please stop trying to take over the comments section. And, please use proper punctuation. This is not (or shouldn't be) a forum for experimental prose or poetry.

Third; Brian, please stop indulging him. By engaging with him, you are indulging his bad behavior.

Fourth; Matt, aren't you supposed to do something about bad behavior here?

Just sayin', to all y'all. I held it in as long as I could.

Hi Jeff, these are my real initials and Dave is well aware of my real name.

RSS said...

Also: not a problem, will delete my text comments.

RSS said...

Jeff, I'm not sure Matt (automatically) agrees with you.

RSS said...

Brian, sorry for the disappearing context

Brian West said...

That’s alright, RSS. You had to do what you thought was right. So, there’s need to apologize to me.

Brian West said...

There’s NO need to apologize to me, I meant to type, RSS.

Edit: Actually I had to do what was in line with "have it your way"
Which often works

RSS said...

Behaviourists, sigh

RSS said...

None of which is helping Dave; there's some irony for you...

Jeff said...

RSS? Even if Dave is "well aware" of your identity, that doesn't mean that he necessarily agrees with you. Probably doesn't.

My problem with you is not that I necessarily disagree with you (which I mostly, but not always, do), but that you are trying to take over the comments section.

I once tried that, during a dry period, but I learned my lesson.

RSS? Try being (relatively) on point instead of just bloviating. It makes for a more lively comments section. IMHO.

"Comments that veer uninterestingly off-topic will be deleted.
The site administrator's decision is final and not up for discussion."
Me, I trust that the administrator has it well in hand...
Was going to say "sorry for flooding" but my impression is that Matt is pretty cool/easygoing/flexible/etc.
Switching to drawn comments anyhow (again, my own suggestion), which should be fun (good practice), which can/will be found at the usual spot

Alas, for graphics I gotta wait for the new drive to arrive (some time next week)
Meanwhile, posted a couple more batches of oldies (mouse drawings) at the blog
Not going to link it since that's pulling traffic away from here (link in my previous comments)
