Notebook 21: Viktor Davis With Gerhard

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

We’re continuing our look at Dave Sim’s 21st notebook used during the creation of Cerebus #164 to 187. We’ll be looking at this notebook, which there were 260 out of 300 pages scanned, until we’ve seen every single page of it. Well, the pages scanned. Lots of walls of text. It is interesting if you can read Dave’s handwriting. Always makes me chuckle that the best letter in comics has handing writing that while better than a doctor’s is to the point that some folk could have trouble parsing it. 

But I digress (RIP Peter David). 

Notice on this next page in the notebook in the second paragraph Dave crossed out Reid and wrote Davis. Viktor takes the audience down a concealed flight of stairs and we see ‘Gerhard’:

In case you can’t read it:

At the bottom of the stairs he had paused and was looking to his right. 

‘Gerhard’ he said in a whisper, pointing across a darkened living room studio in the direction of the dining room area. There was a squeaking sound of someone shifting his weight on a chair that badly needed oiling. Discernable on the wall were four rows of pages. The seventh, and the fifteenth through the twentieth were blank. ‘He’s doing the background on page seven of the part you just read.’ Pointing to the bottom row he added. ‘That’s us down there.’

He flashed another grin. ‘Weird, eh?!’

Down the bottom of the page – the crossed out material – is Viktor talking about how he thinks it was Neil Gaiman who said that all writers are liars. Or all stories are lies. The crossed out material continues onto the next page of the notebook:

Down the bottom of the above page, the material that isn’t crossed out is Alan Moore’s thoughts on stories. This continues onto the next page:

A Weird Fake Cerebus...

This is the message I sent the seller:
FYI, while this art is amazingly similar to what Dave Sim and Gerhard drew years ago, it does not match what was published.
The differences are subtle (the look of the three 'stomps' for example, position of the stars, thickness of the bricks Cerebus is on).
Also the Cerebus figures themselves would've had a 20% screen overlay and there was a type of border tape used between the panels.
For reference: page 811 of the "Church & State Vol. 2" phonebook.

Well, I asked Dave as part of the 44 page Faux I sent with the 11/2025 Please Hold For Dave Sim questions, but I won't get an answer for a week or two, but then I remember I can email Gerhard:

Question: Does this look like something you've seen before?

Tundis's boss got it, and he asked me if it was a recreation by Dave (which I'm asking Dave), but then I thought this might be another of those photocopied pages from the crazy 80s, like that not the cover to issue 80 I got sent to me. Like, maybe you at some point (possibly with alcohol or cannabis involved) mounted the copy on a piece of board and finished it?

It's a long shot, but if I don't ask, the world will never know...

Say "hey" to Shelley for me, and for God's sake don't expend too much energy on this!

Hey Matt!

Retirement is GREAT. I think I've finally found my true calling.
I have my To Do list. Each morning I look through it and say, "I don't feel like doing ANY of that."
And then I don't.

I just saw that "art" for the first time a few days ago. Charles Costas (my Art Guy) sent me a heads-up about it being a counterfeit page.
As I said to him:
It's far too poorly executed to be considered a forgery
but if somebody is trying to pass off fan-art as a genuine page
then it's definitely fraud.

While it KINDA looks like page 15 from issue 91 there are glaringly obvious differences.
Not the least of which (and I didn't see the back of this before) is that we NEVER would have used Bainbridge 80 illustration board. It's too textured and is meant for pencil or pastel work. We used Bainbridge 172; smooth surface for inking.

If somebody did this just for fun and because they liked the page, then it's great.
If they, or someone else later is trying to pass this off as genuine Sim/Gerhard art, then rot in hell, pal.

I hope Tundis's boss didn't pay too much for it.

It's all the goofy details (that are wrong) that fascinate me (as a guy who has poorly copied Dave and Ger before). The weird Non-crosshatching on the bricks. Cerebus' spinning arms. The odd colouring choice on Cerebus.

Hi, Everybody!

So I heard back from Gerhard about  yesterday, and he sent this photo:

Ger's the one who is not in a dress, and doesn't take a dump standing up... usually.

Mondays!

And then This.

Then, you can disagree with me if you want, but at the end of issue #5, Cerebus is heading to Iest. The next issue starts with him in Iest. Which means this story can only take place after #5, and before #6. Dave, years ago on the Yahoo Group, said that this takes place after #6, but Cerebus LEAVES Iest at the end of #6, and in this story (as you're about to see, when I finally shut up) Cerebus is on his way TO Iest. This is where the series starts to become seriously less episodic and has less holes in the continuity. (And the holes there have been up to this point aren't that big. Dave has always said he was VERY aware of the holes in Conan continuity, and consciously kept Cerebus' continuity as tight as possible, which meant that if he finished an issue and was asked to do another story, he would set it on the heels of the previous story and continue it into the next issue, see how Passage fits in between #3 and #4... Something he stuck to until around issue 80 (when Gerhard showed up, I think Dave had enough continuity that he felt he could play around without screwing everything up.) Plus, at the end of #5, Cerebus DOESN'T have the black vest, and in #6 he does. And as you're about to see, here he DOESN'T have it. THis story has to takeplace between #5 and #6...

I'll probably ask Dave about all this when we talk on Thursday to record the first Please Hold For Dave Sim of 2025. Unless everybody sends in a mountain of questions to momentofcerebus@gmail.com before I send the fax up Wednesday night...

It was twenty years ago today...

No Imaginary AMOC Reader who lives rent free in my head, Sgt. Pepper's came out in 1967, so twenty years before that is 1947, and Math isn't my strong suit, but 2023 minus 1947 ain't in the twenties...

So, I just celebrated the 12th anniversary of AMOC, and the 6th anniversary of my taking over, but I realized that next month is the 20th anniversary of you and Dave finishing Cerebus (I believe yours's is around Christmas.) With that in mind, I thought I'd make a big deal out of it. My question is what is your favorite page (or series of pages) from issue #300? (Bonus points for why?)

And Ger said: 

I guess my favourite (or least hated) part of #300 is the 'falling out of bed' sequence.
This panel in particular:

Why?
I like the balance of black/white/grey
and it has this real 'frozen moment' quality.


Least favourite/most hated part was the fifty-seven versions we went through of the cover trying to get the rays of light to look right.
Never really nailed it. Just ran out of time.
