"Dash his-little-fly brains out..."

Hi, Everybody!

If only we could remaster ourselves

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that the extra prints from Cerebus No 1 (Pages 2, 3 & 9) will be available for purchase on Saturday. That's also a good day to head over to:

https://momentofcerebus.blogspot.com

and give a listen to the monthly talk between Dave Sim and "Manly" Matt Dow. They call it "Please Hold For Dave Sim". We call it two and a half to three hours of unfiltered Dave Sim answering questions submitted each month by readers of the blog.

What? Yes, this month's deadline to submit questions has passed. What? I am not a jerk, it was a holiday. And. And... I forgottomentionit. But I'm sure Dave will mention this Kickstarter campaign. I'm just sure of it.

Cerebus No 1 Bonus Prints now available

Hi Everyone, just a reminder that the bonus prints from Cerebus No 1 are now available as Add-Ons. As mentioned previously, anyone purchasing the $900 version of a Cerebus No 4 CAN Portfolio will automatically recieve these prints free of charge. Everyone else can purchase them individually or in one convenient bundle. Free Worldwide Shipping.
And, Hey! if you still got money, There's a Kickstarter for Will Eisner: A Life in Postcards.

Can I just run some of the pages I had to format yesterday?

Please Hold For Dave Sim 7/2022

Hi, Everybody!

Three HOURS. Two minutes and twenty seconds.

Let's hope I can get the thirteen parts assembled as videos before midnight tonight...

Anyway, the "As" get first:

And now the "Vs":

Part 1: we remember Jeff:
And Steve has a Jeff related question:
And everybody else had questions about Steve's birthday gift to me:
And Steve was wondering about Fred, Ethel, and the little fella with the hair:
Part 2: Dan wanted to know:
Matt,
How many of the 6,000 pages and 300 covers exist?
How many of them does Dave possess?
Is Dave “satisfied” with scans or is there a reason to pursue the actual pieces?
If you’d like, you can forward these questions to Dave.
Dan

Part 3: Mike Sewall asks:
Hey Dave and Manly Matt –

On A Moment of Cerebus Blog in 2017, there is a listing for Collected Letters 1990, Collected Letters 2004 Vol 3, and Collected Letters 2006. Do these still exist as digital files or (gasp!) real honest-to-goodness books?

Also - Why was letters 2 so much different than Letters 1 – trim size, no title page, etc.?
Thanks for all you do!
- M J (Mike) Sewall
P.S. – Thanks for the copies of Letters 1 and 2! My Cerebus/Sim bookshelf is pushing out lesser works by those little-known-hacks, Miller, Moore and Watterson. I am busily shoring up from underneath to accommodate the “Sim Wing” of my house.
Part 4: Easton, PA’s resident troublemaker, Michael R. asks:
Hi Matt!
Hope you are enjoy/enjoying the Fourth of July weekend. My questions for Dave.

Hi Dave!
Thank you for the " Quick and Dirty Portfolios " of Cerebus No. 4 6-7/78. Are any differences between the one you sent me and what is being offered on this Kickstarter?

My other question pertains to the last "Please Hold". You and Matt were discussing about video editing and the difficulties of it. Has there been any outtakes on your Weekly Updates which maybe you can put together to make a bloopers segment? It might be fun to watch.

Michael R

Part 5: A guy wants to print Dave's stuff.
Part 6: Coin Upton said:
Oh yes, I got the letter a couple days ago... It usually takes me awhile to compose my thoughts.

I am most grateful for the cheque and yes, doing a "digest" (could you ask Dave what he means by "digest"? Does he mean a mini-comic - 4 1/4 X 5 1/2 inches? A digest to me is 5 1/2 X 8 1/2 inches.) sounds like fun. I have actually thought a lot about the enigma that is Dave Sim. It would be about my relationship with Dave, starting with the reprinting of my story "Chris" in the back of Cerebus. "Chris" was an attack on Woke culture before it even had that name. It would be in part about how it's possible to fundamentally disagree with someone while remaining on friendly terms, a lost art I'm afraid in these days of cancel culture I fear. I imagine we can find things to agree about. Thank Dave for giving me this opportunity. However, I do consider my abysmal spelling to be part of my comics homey charm... :)

Thank you
Colin
PS I don't think Peter Birkamoe (I don't know who he is) is arranging my trip to TCAF but rather the publisher of Conundrum Press. He will fly me there but I will have to find a place to stay while in Toronto.
Part 7: Nick wants Dave for a podcast (specifically to talk about Tangent), and Justin is a pothead (maybe):
Part 8: and we answer the questions you guys had on Margaret's Notebook post:
Okay, the rigamarole is down below.

Have fun!

Next Time: Fuck, man i just spent all day making THIS post...

Cerebus #98 page layouts

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

We last saw Dave Sim’s eleventh notebook used in the production of Cerebus this past January in Posey, Bishop Powers, and Tracing Paper. The 129 pages of the notebook cover Cerebus #96 through 102. Some of those pages have page layouts in them. Of course, those pages layouts don’t have Gerhard’s beautiful backgrounds. So it is fun to see what Dave sketched out in his notebook – if anything – for backgrounds, and what Gerhard did on the final page.

So here is page 49 of notebook 11, notice up at the top it has a 4 and a 5 in the upper left corner of each of the sketches:

Notebook #11, page 49

Those sketches are of pages #4 & 5 of Cerebus #98, aka Church & State II pages 940 and 941.  Both page sketches are done with pencil and then black pen on top. So if you make with the clicky and look at the larger picture, you should be able to see what Dave had sketched in for a background as he didn’t put ink over those. . .except for two tall panels on ‘page 5’.

Then looking at the finished pages from Church & State II:

Cerebus #98, page 4 & 5

Whoa. While the notebook sketches and the pages look similar enough that I was able to match them up, they do have some differences. Both with the characters that Dave put on the page and then Gerhard’s backgrounds.

Hey, there appears to have been a word balloon on page 4’s top panel, but on the actual page, the only word balloon on these two pages is Bishop Powers on page 5.

One Small Step...

Hi, Everybody!

Hey, it's Monday!:

I hope you got your orders in for:
Batvark PENIS! and the "Censored for Grandma" variant: Batvark XXXXX.
And if you want Signed copies of Vark Wars: Walt's Empire Strikes Back (Signed by Dave, Signed by Dave and me, Signed by me after I scribble out Dave's name, Signed by my kids, Signed by my mailman, Signed by neighbor, however you want...) click for more information.
And AND, in stores now: Attractive Cousins

Of course if you find Cerebus in Hell? to be juvenile and insipid, you can get The Strange Death of Alex Raymond/glamourpuss art as well as a Gerhard sketch from Heritage.

And speaking of The Strange Death of Alex Raymond, the Fund Raising Edition is a-coming:
Hi everyone , I wanted to give an update on your purchase of the SDAOR FE books.

1) Sean Robinson has done the pre-press on the files which have been sent to the printer, and have been approved. I’m waiting to hear back from the second printer who will be printing the 123 FE personalization / dedication pages for Dave to sign (BIG THANKS to Sean for his generosity in helping me navigate my way through all of this. I wouldn’t be able to do this without him, and his assistance is very much appreciated).

2) Carson and Sean have launched the KICKSTARTER for YOU DON’T KNOW JACK! Spread the word far and wide!

As well, there’s a very fascinating and engaging interview on AMOC with Carson by Matt about working on SDOAR, YDKJ!, photorealism art styles, and working with Dave. The post is for Saturday Jul 18, 2020.

3) There’s been some confusion about the SDOAR copies being offered through the YDKJ! Kickstarter, so I’d like to clarify:

The FE copies and the ones on kickstarter are part of the same print order, but the ones offered through kickstarter are not SDOAR FE copies (i.e. they will not have the personalized page at the front with your name, numbered out of 123 and signed by Dave). The KS copies contain the rest of the same contents.

Since the printer has a minimum print run for an order on sheetfed presses, the left-over copies after the FE copies were printed were going to be used as promo copies for the California Sales Tour, to be shown at Comic Shops. Since that won’t be happening, I thought it best to contribute some of the left-over promo copies to the YDKJ! Kickstarter.

I will be sending the FE copies once they are ready, and Carson will be sending out the KS ones.

Let me know if you have any questions, or if you would like a refund.
Thanks!
Eddie
And Speaking of You Don't Know Jack, the latest update over there:
Hello Jackians! (Hm. I don't know about that. Jackobians? Jackophiles? Okay, that one's DEFINITELY out!)

Thanks to your support, we are now closing in on $11,000, after only five days of campaign! Thank you so much!

Due to the interest we've seen and questions we've had, we wanted to throw it open to the floor for a discussion or comment. What would YOU like to see added to this campaign, either as a add-on tier, or as a stretch goal that all backers would receive at a certain amount of money raised? So far we've had suggestions of

--offering a pdf package of all of Dave Sim's photocopy layouts for the book, and/or the "Dave Sim Version" of the book!

-- offering personalized signing options

-- offering print copies of the Hermitage Awesomes catalog

Do you have any interest in any of these items? Wish we would add something else to the campaign? Now's the time to let us know!
And in the meanwhile, here are two new Carson Grubaugh Google Grab-bag sketches! First one is from Eddie, and the prompt was "Spice Girls".

And the second was prompted by Lou Valenti: "Frank Miller's Sin City"

There's videos over on the update if you wanna watch Carson be amazing...

Over on the Faceybooks: Gabe McCann asked:
Who can find the Cerebus image of this?
“ And that’s it for life in this solar system...”

Margaret posted them (page 1209 & 1210 of Church & State Volume II, aka Cerebus #111 page 9 & 10)

But since I need a Moment, here's the whole bit:

So, for those playing along at home, Cerebus' first Ascension ended six thousand and fifty-one years ago today...(that, that might be how many pages Cerebus is...)

Next Time: Six pages from High Society with my commentary. Or something else...

Astoria and Cerebus sitting in a tree...

Hi, Everybody!

House of Cerebus.

And Dave's calling on Thursday, get your questions in to momentofcerebus@gmail.com, or else Dave and I will be spending Way Too Long talking about:

It starts with Margaret (and she wants a raise!), continues with me, and then again.

(Ya'll caught up?) ((Did ya read the comments?))

Okay, Jeff's position is that Astoria was manipulating Cerebus when he raped her.

My counter is that Astoria hadn't been able to manipulate Cerebus since the third time Jaka showed up and said:

As evidenced by the last time he saw Astoria before the rape:

But going back to earlier in High Society, there's this bit:

Which is just weird. (I trimmed the bit where Astoria really was high.)

And then there's:

Like, how many times did Cerebus have sex with Astoria?

And bonus: What was this?:
I mean, what was the play here?

Next Time: I dunno, less of this kind of thing?
