Notebook 21: Viktor Makes Coffee

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

We’re continuing our look at Dave Sim’s 21st notebook used during the creation of Cerebus #164 to 187. We’ll be looking at this notebook, which there were 260 out of 300 pages scanned, until we’ve seen every single page of it. Well, the pages scanned. Got all excited last week with that Minds logo. . .and then just more Viktor Davis lamenting about how people want to know what he is thinking so he proceeds to ramble at length. . .which we’ll be getting more of. . .and so I got to thinking: just how much more?

Since we starting the “nothing but Notebook #21” last June (yes, it has been a year!), there are now 199 pages of this notebook posted to AMoC. That is 77% of the notebook. . .how much of that has been just over the last year? Yah, yah, ask me to do math. Ugh. Lets see. . .I dunno. It is more trying to separate out the prior stuff from the “since June of 2025” stuff and that is too much work. 

So lets just focus on the positives: only 23% of the notebook’s pages left to see here on the bloggity blog. That is 61 pages left to see and if we do 4 pages a day, than that is 16 more weeks of posts. 

I think I’ve. . .WE’VE got this. And this week’s four pages are more of Viktor rambling on about his audience some more:

Over on the Cerebus Facebook group, Tim Stoltzfus shared a rarity, he's got the original script to Spawn #10:

He tells his story:

The original script to Spawn #10, signed by Dave Sim, including a concept sketch for the splash page that was the first piece of art done for the book.
Been meaning to post this bit of Cerebus history in here for a while. Long story coming, but sharing here in part because I know people who can contact Dave Sim directly to verify this item is legit and because I think it is time I find a permanent archival home for it so it doesn't disappear.
The Long Story:
Back when I was much younger, I had a comic store in Southeast Pennsylvania and was a Cerebus fan. I met Dave many times at cons in the region, had a few letters printed back in the day, too.
It was May of 1993 when Heroes World Distribution held a retailer conference/gathering at their warehouse in New Jersey. (I think it was in Piscataway? It's been a while.)
One night was a charity casino night/auction. Everyone was given 1k in chips to play with, and then after several hours, you could use the chips to bid on auction items. Naturally, they wanted to raise as much money as possible, so you could bid above the chips you had, you just had to pay cash.
A side effect of this was that bidding prices were done in increments of $100 of "play money", but $100 in play chip money was actually $10 in real money. So an opening bid of $100 cost $100 in chips OR $10 in real money.
When this item came up to bid, hey, I wanted it. After a few rounds of bidding, it came down to me and one other person. Part of the auction was that Dave would sign the script for you and do a head sketch the next day.
I should be more specific, it came down to my Mom and one other person. While I was running the stores, she was the person who took care of most of the money, so she had final say in how much we spent on this item.
The reason the front page says "...and Forty-Five Hundred, Thanks!" is because the bidding got to $450 before the other person gave in.
The next day when I caught up with Dave to get it signed, Dave saw me and said "Oh, of course it is you that won it! But I can't give you just a head sketch, you already have a couple dozen of them." So he drew the full body sketch.
He also shared that he wasn't aware of the money system, so when he was in another part of the room and heard the amount being bid on the script, he was freaking out, "Who in their right mind is paying $4000 for this thing?" is the quote I recall.
I meant to post this a long time ago in here, but my mother passed away back in July of 2022 after an extended period of illness and I decided I didn't want to let this go just yet. It's one of the gems of my collection and I have her to thank for it.
But, I feel it is time I make sure it ends up in a safe place in case something happens to me. It's a piece of comic history now that should be preserved.
I'm hoping someone here who has the contact can share this with Dave and provide confirmation and then I figure we'll go from there. Anyone is free to PM me about this if they have ideas.

My question is about Archbishop Posey. Did you consciously decide not include him in the double page spread in issue 300? I ask because you've said the reason Rick isn't there is that he's one of the most devout monotheists in the story. I couldn't help but notice some similarities between the two characters. They were both devout in their respective faiths, they were both martyred (though, maybe they killed Posey for simply stepping out of line), and they were both not in the spread in #300. Put another way: If Cerebus had a thought bubble of Posey with a question mark instead of Rick as he jumped into the light, would he have had a similar reaction to his absence? (Maybe not since Cerebus might associate Rick with his faith in God and Posey with his faith in Tarim.)

There's also the fact that in #160 Suenteus Po said Posey "died happily and at peace." At peace with God perhaps?

In your fax to Matt on "24 August 22" you wrote, "do I have to change to take the wrist stress down to zero and get everyone the same level of sketch? By the time I hit #26 - MICHAEL R. :) of EASTON PA, IS ALWAYS #26!!! - I pretty much had it figured out." My question is: Now that you "pretty much figured it out" does this mean you found that sweet spot in your penciling and inking where you are feeling more comfortable to increase your artistic workload?

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I might have to change the copy on the Poison Elves panel, I forgot he was picked up by Siruis so wasn't self publishing at his death. I am thinking of adding some copy about online crowdfunding is making self publishing a viable option, for some. Drew Hayes was such a tragic figure, I remember meeting him in Seattle, it may have been Spirits, and how enthused he was over his goal of producing a page a day and more. The next time I saw, months later, he was a broken man. Very sad.

PS I am recovering from Covid but as I am fully vacced it's a mild case. Being vaccinated is no guarantee you won't catch Covid but most likely it won't kill you.

PSS I looked at faxing through my computer but I couldn't figure it out... besides being old I have learning disabilities.

Please explain. James: The name actually comes from a graphic novel series called Cerebus, a parody book featuring a barbarian aardvark. Tarim is the deity worshiped by Cerebus. We went with it to pay homage to the creator of the series, Dave Sim, but also because it just sounds cool.

Hello Marie,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but the blog post you mentioned (at least I THINK it's the post you meant,) was written by someone who is not associated with A Moment of Cerebus anymore.

My blog (well, I run the joint, but I didn't start it,) mostly deals with the comic book series Cerebus the Aardvark. Mental health isn't really a prominent topic on a regular basis.

I mean, I'd be willing to run something occasionally, if I could find a way, but I don't think it's very likely.

Half drawn from professional creators who volunteered their time and half drawn from open submissions, 24 PANELS is about community, hope, and (most of all) raising as much money as possible.

Travis sez: The Office meets D&D, from what I understand, it's a collection of the miniseries written by Plastic Farm's Rafer Roberts (a book Dave recommended before) and drawn by Henchgirl's Kristen Gudsnuk.  I expect it should be good.
