(Un)Collected Letters: Dave Sim? PART TWO!!

Hi, Everybody!

Remember yesterday, when I ran Dave's letter to the Phantom Stranger? (Ya know, F***ING yesterday!?!)

Well friend to the blog and Superman's frenemy, David Birdsong sent in this:
January 1967

See, you KNOW David is Superman's Frenemy, because David won't let Superman forget the time he killed his friends...
Wow, Jeopardy forgot Red Kryptonite? Ya learn something new everyday...

THIS is the moment (heh. "Moment".) when "David Sim" became "Dave". True story. Swear to God. You could look it up.
Okay, tomorrow we WON'T be seeing Dave's letter from Batman #235. I swear.

Next Time: They're Cerebus and Hobbs. Cerebus and Hobbs. One is an aardvark, the other one is Hobbs. To prove their vark-y worth. They'll photoshop the Earth. They're dinky. They're Cerebus and Hobbs, Hobbs, Hobbs, Hobbs, Hobbs!

"Gratification Is A Dish Best Savoured Cold"

'Shadow Of The Axe!' from Creepy #79 (Warren, May 1976)
Story by Dave Sims, Art by Russ Heath

24 September 04

Dear Mr. Morrow:

I’ve just received a letter from Janine Bielski, the Development Director at ACTOR [now The Hero Initiative] notifying me that a "generous donation" had been made in my honour, by you, on March 1 of this year. The letter itself is dated August 11 and was mailed to me September 16. Fortunately, at one time I dated the Executive Director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, so I know better than to take these progressively slow "turnaround times" at a charitable organization personally. The staff members are usually dancing as fast as they can.

I’m assuming that the date of your donation links it to the publication of issue 300 (now receding into the distant past of our mostly "here today, gone later today" environment) and I appreciate the gesture on your part.

Oddly enough, I just picked up the latest Alter Ego last night and, as I told Roy Thomas when I had dinner with him and Dann in Toronto (along with Michael T. Gilbert and his wife Janet and a "hanger on" named Will Eisner), I was again amazed that it was possible to read an entire magazine about comic books without once having to wince or get doubled over by a body shot. I was particularly glad to see Russ Heath's splash page for Shadow of the Axe, but then I’m glad to see that page anytime it doesn’t have my name spelled as "Dave Sims" at the bottom, as it did in Creepy 79 ['Shadow of the Axe' was my second sale of a professional script to Louise Simonson at Warren when she was still Louise Jones].

Thanks again. Gratification, like revenge, is a dish best savoured cold.

Sincerely,

Dave

Collecting 'Following Cerebus'

JEFF SEILER:
Today’s entry is certainly a little different. The first is a handwritten fax from Dave to me that is dated October 2, 2008, with a copy sent to Craig Miller (former publisher of “Following Cerebus”), which addresses my fax to Dave regarding the lengthy delay in Craig putting out the 12th issue “Following Cerebus”. In my fax to Dave, I told him that I would be willing to help him get the articles laid out and printed:

Hi Jeff--
Craig has pretty much sole custody/sole responsibility for Jennifer... My best guess is that it’s pretty much futile (for that reason) to discuss FC until Jennifer starts kindergarten (which I think is another year or two away)... Until then, Craig isn’t going to have time for anything else besides rearing (not raising) Jennifer.

You could suggest doing the Collected FC #1-11 -- that is, doing all the work on it with a team of volunteers but that decision is up to Craig and John. FC is their magazine and has been from the beginning.

Putting the magazine together is the fun part so I doubt Craig would be interested, after doing all of the heavy lifting on #12, to let someone else put the last three pieces in the jigsaw puzzle.

Best,
Dave

The second is a handwritten fax from Dave to Craig, with a copy sent to me, dated October 10, 2008:

Hi Craig--
The way the direct market is set up the only sales you are going to get is on "fresh meat", i.e., what you’ve solicited in this month’s PREVIEWS. There is virtually no back issue market anymore. Over a decade or so, once you have something on the STAR system, you can get on the retailers’ short list of perennial sellers they constantly reorder, but to get on that list you have to be reliable, which FC hasn’t been. Issues 1 to 10 or issues 1 to 11 as an omnibus collection might get on that list, as I say, over the course of a decade or so.

The only permissions you would need to get is for material you paid for: Joe Bob Briggs, period. It’s the Internet Age, Craig, and FC is a fanzine. No one is going to cause a stink and if they do you cut them a cheque when they come whining.

It isn’t complicated at all and I’m sure the Yahoo volunteers would be glad to provide assistance to make it happen.

Dave

Krazy Instructions

JEFF SEILER:
Today's entry is a reply from Dave after I sent him an article about Great Britain granting Shariat courts jurisdiction over Muslims in Great Britain, followed by a London Times editorial saying that "jurisdiction" was going a bit far but that the Shariat courts nevertheless exercise great pressure in the lives of Muslim citizens of Great Britain, such as pressuring Muslim women in one case to withdraw their complaint about not receiving an equal share as their brothers in their inheritance.

In the same letter to Dave, I mentioned that Edward Howard was doing a blog about the most important American comic strips in history. I mentioned that Howard had blogged about Krazy Kat and asked Dave where it was in Cerebus that he had done an homage to Krazy Kat.

His handwritten reply by fax came on September 23, 2008:

--First, we have to figure out if there's a uniformity to Shariat law -- I'd be willing to guess there's a wide variety (Persian, Indonesian, Saudi, Shiite, Sunni, etc.)

--The Koran is very specific on inheritance but perplexing in its specificity (i.e., parents inherit from deceased children in priority over the deceased’s children -- from what I understand, this has been "glossed" in Islam in the same way that the Talmud "glosses" the Torah. If it's a crazy instruction then the entrenched priesthood finds a circuitous crazy argument to get around the specificity and the question is never revisited -- i.e., Shariat law specifies that children inherit from parents in direct contravention of what the Koran specifically says.

--My own view is that crazy instructions (in Christianity "Sell all that thou hast and give the money to the poor", if you would follow the Synoptic Jesus -- in Judaism "Stone to death someone caught gathering sticks on the Sabbath") are YHWH-inspired tests to prove men are evil allowed by God for that reason and that God is winning his point: You can't make men do something wrong over the long term just by telling them it's a direct instruction from God.

Dave

[Dave also noted that his Krazy Kat homage was page 122 of Going Home.]

And then Dave included a photocopy of pages 45 and 46 of (presumably) his copy of the Koran, noting: Hi Jeff -- The relevant texts from Sura IV "Women". Dave He bracketed verses 12, 13, 14, and 15.

With regard to your children, God commandeth you to give the male the portion of two females; and if they be females more than two, then they shall have two-thirds of that which their father hath left: but if she be an only daughter, she shall have the half; and the father and mother of the deceased shall each of them have a sixth part of what he hath left, if he have a child; but if he have no child, and his parents be his heirs, then his mother shall have the third: and if he have brethren, his mother shall have the sixth, after paying the bequests he shall have bequeathed, and his debts. As to your fathers, or your children, ye know not which of them is the most advantageous to you. This is the law of God. Verily, God is knowing, wise!

Half of what your wives leave shall be yours, if they have no issue; but if ye have issue, then a fourth of what they leave shall be yours, after paying the bequests they shall bequeath, and debts.

And your wives shall have a fourth part of what ye leave, if ye have no issue; but if ye have issue, then they shall have an eighth part of what ye leave, after paying the bequests ye shall bequeath, and debts.

If a man or a woman make a distant relation their heir, and he or she have a brother of a sister, each of these two shall have a sixth; but if there are more than this, then shall they be sharers in a third, after payment of the bequests he shall have bequeathed, and debts, [and it finishes in verse 16:]

Without loss to any one. This is the ordinance of God, and God is knowing, gracious!

People Who Haven't Signed The Petition...

JEFF SEILER:
Two letters (both faxes, both handwritten) for today's entry, since they're both short. The first one, dated September 16, 2008, is pretty self-evidently to answer a couple of questions I had asked of him. The second letter, dated September 19, 2008, refers to my having notified Dave of a post at the old Yahoo Group, put up by Nate, regarding his having visited a comics store in New York, where he saw that they had a copy of one of the Gold Editions of glamourpuss #1 that Dave had signed "To Jim Hanley's Universe, 1/1 Edition" for sale for $100. Nate had thought that since Dave had sent this as a gift to the store, Dave should know that it was for sale. I now have a vague recollection of having gone to the hospital on an outpatient basis for a blood test back then, but clearly I didn't have anything seriously wrong with me as, eight years later, I'm still kicking and still as ornery as heck.

16 Sept, 08

Hi Jeff--

I open mail from people who haven't signed the petition all the time... I just either a) don't answer it or b) send them a copy of the form letter.

Dave

P.S. No, I don't usually have an Eid [Al Fitr] feast at the end of Ramadan but then I also don't feast at the end of each day of Ramadan (which, I gather, is customary), sticking strictly to a) salad, b) vegetable juice, c) bread, d) canned pineapple for all 30 days.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

19 Sept, 08

Hi Jeff--

Actually, that was my intention with the Gold Seal Premium copies -- that the store do something attention-getting with them... some of the stores raffled them off... I'd say putting $100 on it is pretty attention-getting! What I wanted to avoid was stores giving them to their best Cerebus customer and therefore have it vanish without a promotional trace.

Tell Nate thanks for his concern, though, and I appreciate him relaying word through you.

You take care as well... don’t forget to call about your blood tests... and say hi to K.

"What Does That Mean?"

JEFF SEILER:
Today's entry was a handwritten letter that Dave faxed to me on September 9, 2008, regarding the Hort and Westcott Translation of John's Gospel. It being, now, eight years and three months later, I don’t have much recollection of having asked about the H&W Translation or what my "health woes" were, but I clearly got better:

Hi Jeff,

Forgot to answer your question re: writing commentaries on the Hort and Westcott Translation of John's Gospel. It wouldn't be necessary. It reads just fine on its own... In fact, I read it aloud in its entirety over Christmas and Easter. There are a couple of interesting points in the narrative I might jot a few remarks on (and I might do that this Christmas) but basically it's just a cleaner and more direct form of the King James version.

It was the fact that I couldn't read the H&W synoptic gospels aloud...

(Well, I could but I had to stop every five words to go... "What does that mean?" or, more often, "There are five different things that could mean")

...that led me to start writing commentaries on them.

If you can get ahold of a copy or get Billy [B.] to send you one, give it a try... I think you’ll see what I mean.

Good luck with your health woes.

"Grow Up, Son."

JEFF SEILER:
This week’s letter from Dave makes reference to a couple of things that I had written to him: First was a visit to the doctor to see what was wrong with my gut (IBS and drinking too much) and the second reference was when I told him that Senator (Candidate) McCain’s pick for his vice-presidential candidate was one Sarah Palin and that she bore a striking resemblance to Tina Fey. I had added that Senator McCain bore a passing resemblance to a certain earth-pig born whenever he (McCain) puffed out his left cheek, as he was prone to do. I then asked if Dave could do me a sketch of Cerebus as McCain, and asked for a hint about the upcoming Secret Project #3, which (IIRC) was Cerebus Archive (the comic book).

05 Sept., 2008

Hi Jeff--

Yes, let's give Rich the exclusive [of posting images from glamourpuss #4] for a week on all images and see what that does and then do a post-op at the end of this month on whether to keep doing it or try something else.

Alcohol is always a bad idea, so I'm with the female Indian doctor on this one. As the doctor of a Scottish retailer said to him in his late 50s, "Grow up, son."

Tina Fey I wouldn't know if I tripped over her... SNL, right? All I know is what I read in the papers. I'll see about the sketch, but no promises until Gerhard is paid off.

No hints on Secret Project #3... yet.

Writing Off Everyone Alive Today...

JEFF SEILER:
This week’s entry was hand-written and dated 03 SEP 08. Merry Christmas, everybody!

Hi Jeff--

Out of typewriter ribbon so this is going to be brief: The Luke Commentaries have joined the Matthew and Mark Commentaries in safety deposit box #692 at the CIBC corner of King and Queen... Sandeep will be signed up for power of attorney sometime in the next while.

I’ve left a phone message with Claude F. -- who has the so-far finished Mark commentaries on his computer -- to dump them onto the Cerebus Newsgroup message board.

In the unlikely event that the response to them is anything besides “Dave Sim is crazy”, “Dave Sim is an asshole”, “Dave Sim doesn’t know what he’s talking about” (coupled with my so-called supporters standing around with their thumbs up their asses and silly grins on their faces serving to tacitly endorse the vituperation) then I’ll be glad to reconsider what seems to me to be the only sensible course of action: Write off everyone alive today as a complete waste of time and stake everything on some future individual or group long after I’m dead.

I put the odds at about 98:2 in favour of the latter situation.

"One Hell Of A Chess Move"

JEFF SEILER:
Returning now to the letters from Dave to me, we pick up where we left off, in August of 2008. This week’s entry is dated 29 August, 08, and addresses YHWH:

Hi Jeff:

Actually, I think YHWH IS modern technology -- at least to the extent that YHWH is the light/day, etc. and is, consequently, incarnated in the form of seminal energy. To a large extent that’s what makes television so addictive and computers so devouring. The world is basically transfixed by YHWH’s purest energy form incarnations. And I think YHWH has a huge amount of control over anything that’s basically another form of her. Particularly with people who don’t inoculate themselves with faith in God, prayer, etc.

Hope everything goes okay with your tests. [Ed: I don’t really recall to what Dave was referring here, but I guess everything went okay.]

I’ve said all along that no woman should ever be ruled out for any position automatically because of her gender. I’ll look forward to reading what I would imagine will be reams of copy about Governor Palin (hopefully some of it about her political views) and that she turns out to be more Margaret Thatcher than Geraldine Ferraro.

But, no question, that’s one hell of a chess move.

Best,

Dave

"The Truth Is No Defence"

JEFF SEILER:
I’m going to break with tradition today and include the letter from Dave to me, from Rick S. to me, and my response to Dave. My letter, Rick’s, and Dave’s, sent by fax, were all dated August 15, 2008:

15 August 08

Hi Jeff:

Well, yes, that certainly makes sense to me. I’m a little leery of making unreasonable demands on people’s time but if Nate and Maggs and Dominick and Rick, etc., are willing to stretch the process out -- and coordinate what they’re doing -- it sounds as if that will give this whole experiment a bit more of a fighting chance. We’re all just guessing and my guess would be that there isn’t that much “crossover” viewing: that the average comics fan has his or her favourite comics website and whatever they see there exists and whatever they don’t see there doesn’t exist.

As to Maggs’ later email: I’m loathe to communicate publicly, given the present political climate (i.e., only 130 people not believing I’m a misogynist/being willing to publicly state that opinion). When you exist in a totalitarian context where Heidi MacDonald is basically saying no one should buy my work -- including a work like Judenhass -- because I haven’t and won’t capitulate to feminism and this has (pretty clearly) been accepted as sane and reasonable by 99.99% of the comic-book field: unless and until I can rack up something more than anecdotal numbers of support, I’m more than willing to accept this as the comic-book field’s final verdict. In the same way that I finally accepted it as the final verdict of the female gender in toto ten years ago and banished all thoughts of a romantic relationship with any woman -- in perpetuity -- until and unless THAT political climate changed (which it shows no signs of doing, a decade later). I offer my work to the free marketplace through intermediaries in the case of the comic-book stores who choose to order it and the volunteers who choose to promote it. Basically, this is as shunned as I’m willing to be until you people (the field in general) change your minds. It certainly makes my life a lot easier -- and in exactly the same way -- being banned from Wonderland means my life makes sense 24/7 and I’m probably the only person on Starship Earth who can say that, at this point.

Glamourpuss doesn’t have a Star code -- that’s only for items on the Diamond Star System. It does have a Diamond Order Code, which is available in PREVIEWS, along with the capsule description at the beginning of the month of solicitation in pretty much all comic-book stores. I get my PREVIEWS late, as a publisher, and since neither LOOKIN’ FOR HEROES [nor] CARRY ON BOOKS, here in town, have signed the petition (unless John Brenner or Andy have decided to do so recently), PARADISE COMICS in Toronto is still the only comic store in North America that I can walk into (i.e., the only store whose owner and staff have signed the petition) that lets me out as a source for these. You should be able to get them online at the Diamond website or in a copy of PREVIEWS at your local store.

Re: Rick/TM Talon...

...well, you know, given that I live in a Marxist country where at any time of the day or night any Canadian resident could swear out a Human Rights complaint against me and have me dragged before the Ontario Human Rights Commission, a quasi-judicial (read: Star Chamber) Marxist thought police vehicle for crushing dissent from Marxist-feminist orthodoxy in this country (a carry-over from 13 years of Marxist Liberal rule). The only requirement is that the person swearing out a complaint fears that what I’ve said could cause them to be held up to public ridicule or contempt. Get this: the truth is no defence. Google search Ezra Levant/Western Standard and/or Mark Steyn/MacLeans magazine for two recent attempts by Muslim groups to silence anyone attempting to discuss Islam or Muslims in a way that radical Muslim groups find discomfiting. Average cost for these two infidels to defend themselves: $100,000 and three years...

Given that, I tend to think it sensible to answer questions that Rick puts to me and to give him my blessing to relay them -- again, the intermediary -- to draw a line in the sand as far over in my ostracism as possible, given that Marxist-feminists don’t tend to extend basic human considerations to anyone not sharing their ideologies and prejudices... and given that Rick is one of a handful of people willing to defend my viewpoints, I’m somewhat disinclined to indict him here on Cinderella Liberty (metaphorically speaking).

However, if Rick/Talon has said or done anything that has caused anyone who has signed the petition to get his or her panties in a bunch and they want me to make a public declaration denouncing Rick/Talon and disassociating myself from whatever he’s said, I’ll be more than happy to look at any indictment on its own merits, to accept that it will probably be taken out of context, but to take any excerpt at face value and even preserve the anonymity of whomever wishes me to denounce Comrade Rick/Comrade Talon for running dog anti-Marxist/feminist views detrimental to the good working order of the Glorious Comic Book Nation’s Shining Path of Goodness and Decency...

But, let me state for the record that I REALLY don’t think Rick/Talon is the problem here and that I appreciate his support for me and my views and his willingness to see the facts as they are and to defend the facts from the thought police, no matter what the consequences. And that, given that I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of people I have known in this field over the course of the last thirty years (thirty YEARS) who are willing to do so... that I count that support and courage on a much higher scale than whatever he might have said that got the aforementioned panties in a bunch...

...So help me God.

Thanks always for your support and counsel and assistance, Jeff (and Maggs and Rick, who I am cc’ing with this).

Onward and upward.

Dave

==================================================

Next: Rick’s response to me:

Jeff,

As far as my functioning memory allows, I have never stated that I’m a Troll. I did admit that I’ve used the Talon moniker as a mirror aimed at those who mock Sim and conservatives (including me) and I’ve turned that mockery around on them many times before. But I have NEVER posted with the sole intention of trolling or riling up a group or desiring to wreak chaos (which is what I’ve witnessed genuine “trolls” do), but almost always as an attempt to expose the ad hominem attacks that are being used to move the discussion offtopic (using sarcasm, wit and flamboyance) in an attempt to redirect back to the truth of the issues being discussed. Dave doesn’t think that it’s a good idea to use those techniques and I can’t disagree with him there. Now, if you can find anywhere that I’ve stated that I’m a troll or “Talon is a troll”, please share the link and I’ll repudiate it asap.

Now, I’ve been “called” a troll for so long that people just assume that I am, almost like they assume Dave is a sexist or misogynist (for the same reasons).

I’m just trying to figure out your motivation here. Are you trying to protect Dave? I just don’t get it. I’m not in partnership with him, I just have a column where I ask him some questions and hopefully he answers. I don’t represent him nor am I his Mouthpiece. Yes, I’m a huge CEREBUS fan and Dave’s ideas and ideals have always made a huge impression on me. We agree on many, many things about gender, politics, and religion. And we disagree on some things. But we’re not attached.

What I want to know is this... why is it that every time I start discussing Dave’s ideas, the conversation turns to either talking about Dave Sim’s deficiencies or talking about my shortcomings? Did you ever think about why that is? And now, you’re doing it!

Dave’s a great teacher... stay on topic.

Rick

==============================================
Lastly, me:

Hi Dave,

I got your fax from early this morning. Funny what God wakes you up for in the middle of the night, eh?

Anyway, I appreciate you sending a copy of it to Margaret and to Rick. As Margaret is so shy about some things and didn’t post it to the others who are putting up the images, I went ahead and did so.

I also sent a copy of what I wrote about Rick to you, to him, so that he could understand what your response was all about. I suspect that he will want to include our faxes in his next Form & Void, so I will discuss this with him.

Understand that I don’t wish him any ill will. I think that what he is doing for you (or with you, whichever) in his column is admirable and I especially admire him for stepping up and filling that void that I might otherwise be filling were it not for my appallingly inconsistent access to a computer and the Internet. Yeah, I know, I could do it like you, with a typewriter and a fax machine, but even regular (let alone free) access to a fax machine is not a done deal for me.

Anyway, your fax does not require much else of a response, so I’m going to return to your baseball analogy of the previous fax, in which you said that if it doesn’t work out past issue #4 [of glamourpuss], then that will be an example of you “running the bases because, well, that’s what a pro ball player is expected to do.”

It reminded me of three incidents from the real world of baseball that I think are also analogous.

First, in 1991 (I think), the great Hall-of-Famer, George Brett, upon nearing the 3,000 hit milestone, was sidelined by a recurring injury until the last few days, sitting at 2,996 hits. Upon his return, many doubted his ability to reach the milestone that season. In his first game back, however, he had not one, not two, but four base hits in the game, to reach 3,000.

A couple of years later, in 1993, as he approached his final game, he was asked how he envisioned his final at-bat. Many other greats envisioned a home run or some great feat, in their cases. But, Brett just said, “I see it as a ground ball to second that I’ll run out the whole way.” As he always did. For the record, it was a hot grounder that went off the second-baseman’s glove for a single. Number 3,154.

Lastly, there’s Hall-of-Famer Carlton Fisk, who once slightly fractured my hand when I shook hands with him after the 1991 All Star Game in Toronto. Late in his career, when he was with the White Sox, he was behind the plate when a rookie phenom popped up to second base, trotted a few steps toward first base, and then peeled off towards the dugout. Fisk ran up behind the phenom, who later credited Fisk with changing his attitude towards the game, and Fisk yelled in the kid’s right ear, “Run!”

I am proud to say that I know that no one has ever had to admonish you thusly, Dave.

So, just wanted to say thanks for the past, present, and ongoing Hall-of-Fame effort.

Respectfully,

Jeff
