I look forward to all the constructive criticism in the comments.

Next Week: I've run out of AI images! We'll have to look at real art...Unless David sends me more AI!

New Contest: Fill out the word search, send a copy of your completed entry to momentofcerebus@gmail.com by October first, and you'll be entered into a drawing for a Little Orphan Aardvark prize back! (What's in the prize back? I dunno. I haven't figured that out yet, but it's GURANTEED to have at least one piece of paper with Daddy Varkbucks signature on it (it'll say "Dave Sim", not "Daddy Varkbucks", but you get the idea...) (The piece of paper could be anything. A vintage Cerebus comic, a promotional postcard, original art, anything! Ya know...that Dave has sent me and is in the AMOC Prize drawer...). Plus a L.O.A.S.S. entry kit for those not in the wordsearch. Maybe FIVE American dollars... The possibilities are nearly endless (the actualities are not.). )

RULES (Read these carefully, ya don't want to be a Seiler and end up disqualified...):
  1. Fill out the wordsearch.
  2. Send it to momentofcerebus@gmail.com
  3. 1 (one) point each for each name on the list found
  4. 5 (five) points for any word NOT on the list found. (MINIMUM THREE LETTERS! "BE" won't get you shit. Ya gotta put in a little effort. ALSO: Real verifiable words only. (Although ya may get extra points if you find "Kwyjibo"...)
  5. Bonus 50 (fifty) points if you can identify WHO these people actually are (10 (ten) points for a partial list since you guys probably will never guess who Empennage and Sundrop are, I don't even think THEY know...)
  6. Get your entry in by October (10) 1st (first)
  7. After that I'ma take the entries, calculate the points, and highest point total wins the Big Prize, everybody else gets entered into a drawing for a 2nd (second) place prize. Depending on turnout, EVERYBODY might get a prize. Or, if this one actually takes off and more than Zipper and Dodger enter, there might only be 3 (three) prizes.
  8. My decisions are final.
Good luck! And Remember" Aardvark is counting on YOU!

Spore Batvark- Behind the scenes part 1

Benjamin Hobbs:

First off, Aardvarkian Splendor should be in stores today, if it wasn't last week.  If anyone out there receives copy # 1-105, Dave would like to know.  Typically, these are sent to him, but this time they weren't.  So if they exist, let me know in the comments!

Regular AMOC reader Michael R. contacted me last week and had this to say:

"Hi Benjamin!
In today's post on AMOC the Diamond Preview of CIH? Spore Barvark is up and ready to order.

"You probably know by now that ill be in the issue. :)

"I have an idea, if you want, I can send you the email from Dave through Birdsong wanting to be in the issue, my photos posing for Dave and any thoughts I may have had when this was all happening a year ago.

"If you give me some time, I can get some stuff together before the issue comes out and maybe we can bump sales a bit for your Wednesday's posts on AMOC.

"Michael R"

Of course I told him to send everything he had, so I could milk it for WEEKS here on the Wednesday column.

He wrote this overview of the events that transpired:

"I’m not sure why I was chosen by Dave Sim to appear (guest star) in CIH? Spore Batvark (You can preorder CIH? SPORE BATVARK right now) other than being voted LEAST TRIGGERING INTERVIEWER. :)

"I received a fax from Dave via email from David Birdsong September 13,  2022. Dave had an idea to have me asking questions for an upcoming issue of CIH? and if I was game.

"I needed to be in specific poses behind a white sheet. As luck would have it, the following day, while at work, I was delivering 2 Coke double door coolers for amateur golf tournament in Bethlehem,PA. Well, a lot of these special events the coolers usually go underneath a white tent. So, I asked my co worker, Jordan, if he was game. He was.

"Reading and rereading Dave’s specific instructions, I was being posed by co worker to raise my hand , lower my hand , tilt my head, etc. I hoped after we were done that would be sufficient enough. No telling when I would get another opportunity to be on the position I was as that day.

"I sent the photos to David Birdsong and he was sure that Dave would like them. He did.

"After that nothing happened. Then, during one of the PHFDS, Dave mentioned that David Birdsong should send me the mock ups. Soon after that I received them. This was around the time in March of 2023. None of the mock ups were of the photos I sent. I believe that Dave just used a “stand in” until the photos I sent Birdsong were used. At least I think they were used. I only received the mock ups.

"I'm pretty sure that the final pages will a bit different than the ones I’ve seen. I'm pretty sure the dialogue will be tweaked, as well. I'm not going to give anything away , so you have find out yourself what questions Dave will have me asking and BUY THE COMIC when it comes out.
Who knows if sales are REAL good , I may reappear again next year!! OR!!!! IT MAY BE YOU!!!"

And because I'm milking this for as many weeks as I can, you'll have to wait until next week to see the faxes and emails.

Batvark Spore One Shot is available to order NOW from Diamond. In both Signed and Unsigned:

Next Week: A Fax from Dave Sim and emails from David Birdsong.

Saturday, 26 August 2023

Okay, so Dave explains all these photos...

Hi, Everybody!

So I got a fax from Dave:
Lot going on in this one, but part the first is what I'm focusing on now. Because Dave has sent me A. Lot. of photos.
"PHOTO OF ME BY CHESTER BROWN MARKHAM ST. TORONTO NEAR 'THE BEGUILING'."

"CONRAD FELBER PHOTO SO THIS IS NORTHERN ONTARIO"

"JEFF 'EL JEFFE' BOUNCER AND DOORMAN HAMMING IT UP WITH HOLLY WOOD'S (HER REAL NAME) TIARA AT A PETER'S PLACE HALLOWEEN PARTY"

"WATCHING MONIQUE 'RAMONA' PLAY MS. PAC MAN. SHE WAS THE OFFICIAL GIRLFRIEND OF JOHN BRENT WHO WROTE 'THE CEREBUS THEME'"

"LAST DAYS OF THE POST-HARRY NOW & THEN BOOKS LEFT TO RIGHT: ROB WALTON, DAVE KOSTIS (OWNER), DAVE SIM"

"DAVE SIM UK COMIC ART CONVENTION AS HUNGOVER AS I LOOK"

I don't wanna run the backs of the photos with Dave notes, but this one struck me as particularly funny:

"ONE OF THE 'MEET DANNY OCEAN VERY VICKY' TWINS"

Look. At. ALL! Those Diamondback. Decks!!!

These next ones were labeled "THE LAST SIGNING" except one of the sketch ones which was labeled "STOO METZ THE LAST SIGNING STRANGE ADVENTURES HALIFAX NS SEPT. 2010". I don't know if that's supposed to be for the photo of Dave with the other fella, or if it's supposed to go to one of the sketch ones...

More of these are a'comin'...

Spore Batvark is #380 if you add all the Cerebus in Hell? issues to the 300 Cerebus issues. (Hey, if Marvel can do it...) (It's really Cerebus in Hell? #80.

Still a few days to order: Cerebus in Hell? Presents: WildP.I.G.S. or Signed.

New Dave Art! Weird CiH? issue! New Dave Art! I'ma go to bed!

Hi, Everybody!

I'ma tired. SIM:

I asked the team, and Hobbs said:
My guess is 1-105 were damaged in binding. The book was late due to something with binding.
Sim was having none of that, but that's a "Not NOW, I'ma tired" post for later...

Anyway:

And Page 6: (Clicky for biggie)

And I said New Dave Art! twice: (Click for Unorthodox Sizing Revenge (IE: Biggie).)
Dave says:

Hi Todd!  Fortunately the Triptych will be wider than it is tall, so you might have room for some or all of this on the page.  LOL.   Dave

Dave Sim Cerebus No.54/55/56 cover art recreation triptych (Aardvark-Vanaheim 1983) Just in time for the 40th anniversary of Wolverroach. "I had collaborated with Joe Rubinstein on the 'The Morning After' back-up story in Swords of Cerebus Vol.2 and had noted that Joe used a highly polished but more conventional Marvel brush inking technique on the story rather than his Neal Adams-style inks I knew from his collaboration with John Byrne on Captain America.  So, this was 'none of my business' unspoken questioning of artistic choices.  Frank Miller had obviously been doing his best Neal Adams riffs pencilling the covers for the Wolverine mini-series (1982), so why hadn't Joe used Adams-style inks on those covers?  You know, like this?"  That is, "pen-heavy" rather than "brush heavy"? i.e. I was "doing" Neal in the pencils, but then inventing a cross-hatch heavy pen and simplified brush style on my parody covers. No way to ask Joe that without being rude and I literally never saw Joe at another convention after that (to this day). It's worth noting, I think, that this was three years before The Dark Knight Returns where Frank made the artistic choice to go with Klaus Jansen who opted for a very "pen dominant" look.

It certainly pushed the boundaries of what constituted a parody: Marvel's Core-of-the-Franchise Intellectual Property and the only difference was the little antennae balls on the points of his mask.  Which was part of what I was making fun of since the Wolverine mask was really a "riff" on Batman's bat-ears. How do you do Batman without actually doing Batman?  Also it was just Wolverroach on the three covers, "riffing" on three of the four Wolverine covers. It's parody, but it's also, arguably, actionable misappropriation. Jim Shooter had a word with me before a convention panel.  "If you ever decide to do that again, call me first." Which I said I would do, but knew I wouldn't since I knew he would just say "No".  Which I assume was him covering his own bases with the Marvel Legal Department. If I did do it again, he could then let Legal "Loose the hounds" and I'd have only myself to blame. I never did it again mostly because the occasion never came up again. Leaving open the question: how many solo covers is too many solo covers, legally?  Which has never been tested in the subsequent forty years.  Happy Birthday, Wolverroach!

Both these are coming to Heritage eventually...
