Gerhard Backgrounds Foregrounded, Centralia by Miel Vandepitte, and more

 Sean Michael Robinson:

Well hello fellow aadvarkians!

It's been a while directly writing you all. But our gracious host Matt Blogger suggested I write an update about some of the Cerebus-adjacent things I've been up to!

First off, I got Gerhard-ized. Here's how I described this on the FaceBooks.

"How wild was this week? This'll give you some idea. This piece is currently on my drawing board, temporarily, but it's about to head back to its owner. The portrait was drawn by me many months ago, with a large brush, rather wildly. And the background was entirely created and drawn by the legendary Gerhard. Details included to get an idea of the stunning level of detail on this. Quite an experience to have this arrive in the mail!"

This was really quite the thing to receive in the mail, and quite the experience to view the transformation.

Weirdly enough, I actually drew the central image twice, the first time on camera (where it was promptly destroyed by some type of spill immediately after filming). Here's a video of the first pass at the image.

In a way  I'm glad the first version was destroyed, as the second has a lot more verve and attention to shadow etc, and I ended up giving Gerhard a lot more white space to work with.

Second big item —Living the Line just launched a Kickstarter presale for the graphic novel debut of Flemish cartoonist Miel Vandepitte. He's got a wild style—very stylized clean-line characters wandering in a highly-detailed, architecturally wild world that's been stricken by environmental disaster. Miel is really into pro wrestling, which I think comes through in the anything-goes environments and characters, as well as the heightened drama of the various conflicts. An incredible debut, and one I can't be prouder to be bringing into English.

Currently available for preorder at your local comic store, book store, or through our Kickstarter, which just launched!

Lastly, I've been working on a lot of Cerebus stuff too... but you're probably hearing about most of it through Waverly Press/Dagon. :) Be sure to follow them on Instagram so you can follow along too!

Hope you all are doing well.

Thanks, Sean.  And it's Monday:

Mrs Snatcher

MARGARET LISS:

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

So here we are again. Another look at Dave Sim’s seventh notebook used in the production of Cerebus. We’ve been looking at this same notebook for months. Really. Since like the start of September. For eleven entries. And while it has been interesting and fun, we aren’t looking at Dave’s seventh notebook. This time. It is time to look at notebook #17, which covers Cerebus #127 through 135 and only had seventy-two pages scanned. The last time we saw any pages of notebook #7 was way back in February of 2021 in Jaka Finds Fred’s Note.

A couple of the 72 pages of notebook #17 had sketches of Mrs Snatcher without her mask. Kind of.

Notebook #17, page 15

I thought the 128 with a five underneath of it refereed to Cerebus #128 page 5, or page 297 of Jaka’s Story. If it does, there is nothing on this page that goes along with it. . .

The interesting thing about that page, is you can see something underneath it? Kind of? Well, flip it to the other side and you can see Mrs Snatcher with her mask on, and kind of see her face under it, from the other side.

Notebook #17, page 16

Aardvarkian Splendor Cover Progression Part 5

Benjamin Hobbs:

When last we saw the cover of Aardvarkian Splendor #1 (Due out August 2023!) Chad "I wrote the issue" Lambert's drawings had been added to the cover of the issue:

Dave had suggested that the Cerebus figures head could be funnier and suggested these changes:

This is the drawing I came up with:

It was added to the cover (shown with color flats):

Then it was decided that the thought balloon should be a word balloon.  Some color variation was added to Cerebus and his drop shadow was changed from cross hatching to a continuous blue tone:

Next Week: BTVRK! It's at your LCS! See what all the fuss is about!
