Thumbnails for Cerebus #99 Part 3

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

For the last couple of weeks we’ve been seeing some of Dave Sim’s thumbnails for Cerebus #99 taken from his eleventh notebook he used in the production of Cerebus: Thumbnails for Cerebus #99 and then in part two. So when I continued looking at the notebook and saw thumbnails for the next couple of pages of Cerebus #99 I thought, sure, lets take a look at them as well.

The next page in the notebook, page 76, is some text for pages 14 through 18 of Cerebus #99. The backside of the page are the thumbnails for pages 12 & 13 which we saw last week (page 75):

Notebook #11, page 76

The dialogue for pages #14 and 15 doesn’t quite match up to the finished pages.

The next page in the notebook has the page thumbnails for pages 14 and 15. The dialogue from the previous notebook page was slightly tweaked, and is on the bottom of page 77 of the notebook:

Notebook #11, page 77

The dialogue along the bottom of this page matches the finished pages. The page thumbnails are pretty closed to the finished pages as well. Including Ger getting the activity in the courtyard of Great Andrena on the pile of wood while someone reads something and the pope figure watches with the guard standing nearby.

Page 14 matches panel for panel, including word balloon placement. Page 15 is close to the thumbnail in the notebook, but the sequence of the final two panels is reversed.

Cerebus #99 pages 14 & 15, aka Church & State II pages 970 & 971

Twenty twenty twenty four(-ish) hours to go!!!

Hi, Everybody!

And if you've backed The Remastered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 Featuring Cerebus Kickstarter from Aardvark-Vanaheim and The Waverly Press, you got the newest Update with what's happening in the home stretch.

But, because THIS AIN'T MY 1ST RODEO, I'ma post on MY DAY OFF (mainly because I was asked to, but mostly because DAMNIT BIRDSONG did one of his minimal information posts, and I F***ING hate those...)!

Anyway, the Last Day of the Kickstarter brings us Dave's recreation of the cover of Turtles #1:

Nah, that's a cover I did using images Dave sent me. Here's Dave's REAL cover:

Quote: This final T8 cover (D) by Dave Sim is priced at $15, or get a bundle of 10 copies for $100!

And then there're TWO more covers from Samuel G. Wolfe and Al Gofa, who got them in late:

Quote: Both covers will be strictly limited to 250 copies, but only 190 will be available to collectors, priced at $20 each.
I know:
"If they're printing 250 covers why are only 190 covers available for purchase?"
Again, not a Rodeo Virgin. They hold back, in this case 60, covers in case any get damaged in shipping, or in case of printing errors during the run, etc. You'll see some of them 60 get offered over on CerebusOverload at some point, OR as part of the 2024 Holiday Bundles.

I ger-own-tee it...

Continuing.

And then there's the Zombies (ALWAYS with the Fakakta zombies...):

Quote: If you were following the campaign closely, you know about the 7 flash sale zombie variants by Dave Sim, each offered on a different day for only 24 hours. Many of you missed out on random days and have contacted us about acquiring those missing books. Each of the 7 covers are strictly limited to 100 copies but only 85 are being offered to collectors...

We JUST covered the "why Matt?". Literally. Printing errors/damaged in shipping...
Continuing quote: We counted the sales for each Z-variant and offering the last few remainders during this home stretch, priced at $20 each. At 100 copies, these are among the rarest variants for this release. We are offering a set of all seven Zombie covers in a trading card set. Just like the books, we are only offering 100 sets, priced at $20.

And the:
Quote: If missed out on the first batch of Dave Sim’s original hand drawn trading cards, we have added more which are affordably priced from $75-$150 each!

And then the last thing on offer is...well, read on McDuff:
Our final offering is something a bit more unique.

For $500, you can have an hour on the phone with Cerebus creator Dave Sim. Want to talk about comics in the 80s? How about working with Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird on Turtles #8, or Todd McFarlane on Spawn #10? Dave will happily discuss whatever you like for one full hour! As a bonus, Dave will record the conversation and email it to you upon request. In addition to the phone call, we will mail you a mystery package filled with cool Cerebus swag (books, cards, stickers and pins) courtesy of Waverly Comics!
Basically your very own Please Hold For Dave Sim. I was asked if I had a photo of Dave on the phone to be used to help sell this (and as a guy who gets his $1500 phone calls for free, and has been getting them for free since back when they was $900 an hour for a call, I can say $500 and you don't even have to deal with [name withheld]? That's a steal...) and I came up with this:

It was funnier when I made it during Week 3 last week...

And:

And last quote:
Finally, do you have a burning question for Dave about the creation of T8 or anything else related to Cerebus? Post your questions in the comments section and we will pass them along to Dave. We will post his answers in the comments section for everyone to read (if he answers).
It ALL ends tomorrow 10am Eastern (Kitchener) time, 9AM here at the ol' AMOC Cave. (Next week Wednesday down in Australia where Dion Turner lives...time zones are WEIRD man...)

AND THEN ON FRIDAY: The Kevin Eastman Turtles auctions start on Heritage. Including the second to last page of Turtles #8:
And Dave's Turtles covers:

You can hear Dave and Mr. Eastman talking about art in the auction...RIGHT HERE:

SDOAR 2023 GoFundMe #13: Ashcans Unlocked! More Emo Dave!

"Deft and truly illuminating rumination on the aesthetics of comics in their historic context ... brilliantly injects a whining Charlie Brown into the history as Schulz’s aesthetic counterforce to the short-lived photo-realist era of American comics."

- Steve Smith, Panels and Prose

How could I resist a reference to Charlie Brown and, by extension, Emo Dave?

I must thank everyone who sent emails claiming to enjoy the first Emo Dave strip. Sometimes you put stuff out there to deafening silence, and other times you get chants of "More Emo Dave!" Let's see if I can't dampen your enthusiasm with strip #2.
TMI, Emo Dave! TMI.

Since the tote board didn't make it into this week's strip, let's get an up-to-the-minute SDOAR 2023 GoFundMe campaign update here:
  • $4,285 raised from 68 donations
  • 25 new pages released as mocked up by Dave Sim from June 11 to August 18, 2021
  • 46 total pages available on Dropbox, including Dave's 2019 mocked-up pages
  • Only $115 away from unlocking fantastic page 47
  • SDOAR 2023 Ashcans Vol. 0 & Vol. 1 are now unlocked
Speaking of which...

Jen's Non-Stressful Ashcan(s) Update

Emo Dave might be exaggerating just a bit, but putting together two ashcans is a bit daunting. That said, here is where we stand as of today.

I emailed Alfonso at Preney at StudioComix Press with details on the ashcans and asked what he needs from me and in what format to get started. No word back yet, but it's still early days. I will likely run through several proofs before sharing with Dave. I will also likely test out two versions, one comic book size and one California Test Edition size, to gauge the difference in readability. Dave is dubious that comic book size is going to readable.

NO pricing decisions have been made. I need to confirm costs with Alfonso based on a limited print run. Based on feedback so far, my gut says with we go with the larger size, first edition is available for GoFundMe donors only, then open it up after delivery to a broader audience. But let's not put the cart before horse until I have more information.

Since this is my first go at this, I don't have a date for release, but will provide weekly updates here on my progress. On the bright side, Alfonso knows what he is doing, so hopefully he'll guide me through the rough patches. And let's face it, I opted for the term "Ashcan" just in case I suck at this.

Issue details as of this moment are...

Ashcan #0: 28 pages including cover. Pages 1-21 from Dropbox, plus three SDOAR 2023 strips (maybe?), front cover mocked up by me (based on lengthy fax discussions with Dave), inside front cover letter from the Interim Head of SDOAR Division (probably?), inside back cover ads for GFM & Ashcans (probably?); back cover black with review quote. Still working on where the list of donors will be, either inside front cover, back cover, or in a hologram on the front cover for the special deluxe collector's edition.

Ashcan #1: 28 pages including cover. Pages 22 - 45 from Dropbox, front cover mocked up by me, inside front cover letter from the Interim Head of SDOAR Division (probably?), inside back cover ads for GFM & Ashcans (probably?); back cover black with review quote. Still working on where the list of donors will be (come on, it's only been a few seconds!), either inside front cover, back cover, or in a hologram on the front cover for the special deluxe collector's edition (that's a joke).

Now back to how one can donate and get another ashcan added to my to-do list.

Just the Facts, Ma'am
  • If you have not donated >> $5+ donation grants access to all 46 pages and all pages moving forward!
  • If you have donated (thanks!!) >> GoFundMe does not have an option for monthly subscriptions. So... if you want to donate on a monthly basis, please do so as we are on the final days of month #3.
  • GoFundMe is a dreadful communication platform -- if you haven't heard back from me, gotten access to the new pages, etc., please email me at jen@typingmonkeys.com

Lower-Priced Pledge Items!

This week I have a few Cerebus in Hell? duplicates available, including Swords of Cerebus in Hell? #1 (signed) *and* Hell o' Dali with cover and a few strips by yours truly (fine! Dave and David might have helped a bit) one signed by Dave and one unsigned by Dave. Happy to add my John Hancock or not as the case may be.

Make me an offer for any items that tickle fancy -- and we'll see if we can move the GFM numbers a bit in the process!
Interested? Email me at jen@typingmonkeys.com and make me an offer that I can't refuse.

Just the Fax, Ma'am

Turns out we did have one piece of production art mailed out during the TMNT #8 madness for donor David Beale who unlocked a page. And fear not, I supplied Dave with the Elrod Bunny details.

News on the Remastered The Last Day, and another TMNT Card entry.

Hi, Everybody!

It's Ramamdan. No Monday for you.

So, Eddie Khanna, you remember Eddie, right?
Yeah, him.

Anyway, Eddie let me know that the Remastered The Last Day

has been shipped to Diamond, and should be on their way to the stores that ordered them.

"What about the hardcover version from the Waverly Press Matt?"

Ya DO know that they're up to their tits in The Remastered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 Featuring Cerebus Kickstarter right?

But yes, Virginia, there WILL BE a Deluxe Hardcover from The Waverly Press. At some point. Not yet. When I know, you'll know. (So don't start sending in the emails. We're all busy with the Turtles. I WILL tell ya. Chill ya tits...)

Next Time: JenBenMags! End of the TMNT 8 KS! Dave! I return with me bullshit on Saturday...

Sunday 26 March 2023

I took a field trip with my family. Wanna see the slides? (And NEW Dave Art!)

Hi, Everybody!

So, yesterday, I went to the "You-see-'em" with the family. And even on my time off, the little grey bastard haunts me...
(I got photo evidence.)

This dude talked at me for twenty-five minutes about how I could save 15% on my car insurance by switching. TWENTY-FIVE minutes!

This is a model of Jerusalem. I took it to send Dave. Forgot to take a picture of what the little flags meant...

Egypt. From The Last Day. SEE? SEE?!? THE LIL' BAS'ARD STALKS ME!!!

I saw Paul McCartney and John Lennon...

Meep-Meep!

When I read this, I thought of this:

And Ger's background in the last panels looked like this thing:
It's a replica of a map of a Sumerian City. Wasn't Conan Sumerian?

Don't believe the sign there. This stuff's from Wakanada...

The "Treasures of Tattooine" exhibit was great...

Donnie. Sticking to the shadows...like a Ninja!

Leo.

Mikey.

Raph...

...wasn't takin' crap from anybody.

"Okay, you saw some turtles. Big deal. Calm down Matt..."
NO! YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! It wasn't just some turtles and tortoises (they're different. I saw a sign explaining it...) IT WAS TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES! EIGHT!!!
SEE!?! SEE!?!?!
I can't get away! I can't!

(It's okay, I'ma come back with some "ooze" and start my own franchise:

"Irradiated Juvenile Ju-jitsu Iguanas"
I'ma gonna be SO rich...

That's what I did during my spring break. Thanks for coming to my presentation.
