Wow! What a nice surprise! It's incredible to think that Dave has a framed picture of me, David and Terry up on his wall (a Brits wall by the look of it!) alongside Lenny Henry, Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French. Please thank Dave from me for sending those photos.

I recently went on two mini tours (five gigs at the end of April and four gigs last week) with The Wedding Present - my first time touring with a band. David invited me along to get a taste of 'life on the road' in preparation for our book signing tour in November to promote the release of Volume Two of the Tales From The Wedding Present hardback books. I had a great time and sold and signed lots of copies of Volume One at the merchandise stall.

I've been working daily on new stories and I have ten more pages to draw before inking the final twenty pages.

British comedian, actor and writer Lenny Henry was awarded the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Special Award in recognition of his "outstanding creative contribution to television" at the British Academy Television Awards on 8 May 2016. Congratulations Lenny!

Visiting Lenny & Dawn: Part 2

MY NOVEMBER 2000 VISIT WITH LENNY HENRY & DAWN FRENCH
a true life Dave Sim adventure

[Continued from Part 1...] This was the reason that Lenny had invited me over: FRENCH & SAUNDERS UK or FSUK. They were touring for the first time in ten years. I suspect that part of Lenny's motivation was "Dawn liked Dave. I'm in the doghouse with Dawn so maybe I can get out of the doghouse by asking Dave to come over." Probably not the best of moves since it was on the trip he had been returning home from when I met him that the cheating incident took place.

The event program was VERY funny: a send-up of HELLO magazine with Dawn and Jennifer Saunders pretending to be a famous lesbian couple adopting their first child: TINY SISSY TEARS. Dusting around the house while wearing an opera gown and tiara. That kind of thing. VERY droll bits, like Dawn with her finger sticking in the doll's eye. Reading between the lines, you realize that the reason they've adopted a child is publicity -- like a world exclusive in HELLO magazine. I'm sure HELLO magazine wasn't terribly amused. I actually "liberated" a copy of HELLO magazine from the guest flat so I could explain the joke to North Americans.

Dawn said to me, "You should have been here last night. SURE was here." Who? She had to repeat it a few times. Oh, CHER! Wow. I was impressed. Here I was breathing the same air that Cher had been breathing the night before!

I got the program signed by both of them backstage. When I was introduced to Jennifer Saunders she said, "Oh, yes. You're Lenny's hero." Which, obviously, had something more of an edge to it than it had when I had been there for his 40th birthday party two years before.

My VIP backstage lanyard. Never having been backstage before, I didn't know what to expect. We basically sat around and ate stuff and watched television. What did we watch on television? Whatever Jennifer Saunders' kids WANTED to watch on television. Lenny and I chatted about this and that, but there was no question that it was a bit awkward. "I'm With Lenny" wasn't the best credential to have backstage at a French & Saunders show in November of 2000. I mean, I was also there because of Dawn. I was glad she signed the program "Your chum".

I did take the two of them out for dinner one night. It didn't seem strained (to me), but then they're actor and actress -- part of their job is acting one way when they're actually feeling another way. I remember saying to them at one point, "I wish you could see how people react to you. People just light up when they see it's you. Just by walking past them you've given them a memorable moment." Obviously a double-edged sword and I didn't "get" how sharp the other edge can be.


a) The playbill for Jerry Hall who was playing in THE GRADUATE just around the corner from Lenny and Dawn's guest flat in Soho where I was staying. b) Me doing my best Mick Jagger impression for Dawn French at Lenny's 40th birthday party and...

I guess b) was on her mind when Dawn said to me, early in the 2000 visit, "Do you want me to fix you up with Jerry Hall while you're over here? She isn't seeing anyone right now." This tied in weirdly with Lenny saying to me at one point when I first got there, "But! You're like a rock star!" I don't even remember the context. All I could do was laugh. "I'm glad I had YOU fooled. I was never a rock star. I may have had more than my share of girlfriends and one-night stands, but… that's all over now." I had just fasted in Ramadan for the second time. Having "split hairs" over fornication and adultery in RICK'S STORY, I had decided they were in the same general box and needed to be kicked out to my personal curb.

It was weird, because I thought, "Actually it would be fun to have dinner with a beautiful Texas woman in London and talk about Texas. Who ELSE is going to talk to her about Texas in the UK?"

But. When a woman asks if you want to be "fixed up" with another woman when both you and the woman in question are there temporarily, that's not usually what she's talking about. I pictured Jerry Hall saying "I thought you said this guy was FUN! All he wanted to do was to talk about God and Texas -- in that order!"


This, to me, was the best thing about the flat in Soho -- it was just down the street from St. Patrick's Church. Which was open all day. I mean, you could just walk in and pray whenever you wanted to. You can't do that in Canada for the most part. Our churches are locked up tight as a drum except for a few hours on Sunday. I thought all churches were like that, worldwide!

Once I got over the sense that I was "getting away with something" going into a church and praying without -- you know -- "clearing" my prayer with whomever was in charge, I noticed they had a brochure about West End Catholic Churches. So I picked one up and then entertained myself by going out and finding them all and praying in each one. Sort of like the reverse of all the landmarks Gull goes to in FROM HELL. Maybe they describe a lop-sided triangle or half a Star of David or something.

Visiting Lenny & Dawn: Part 1

"I Followed Him To School One Day". Lenny Henry couldn't believe that I actually wanted to spend his entire working day with him. TV taping IS boring, but only if you never get to see it. This is really the only taping part that I got to see: the titles sequence for his BBC special LENNY HENRY: IN PIECES. This is the very rough storyboard they were working from. Lenny's basically interacting with an old-fashioned countdown clock and here he's trying to "escape" by running to the back of the frame and attempting to break out.



I had purchased a disposable camera for the occasion. This is Lenny, having rehearsed the shot a few times, ready for the "squashing his face up against the screen" shot. They had this whole rig with a giant sheet of acetate that two guys were going to hold as Lenny ran full tilt into it, the camera on the other side of the acetate. He was NOT HAPPY (as you can see) that someone was breaching his creative space. Until he saw it was me. And then he had to pretend it was okay because, you know, he's a CEREBUS fan!

[on the right: this is how we started the day: in the costume department where Lenny was getting fitted with his Little Orphan Annie wig. One of the skits was about Lenny, making use of Affirmative Action, demanding that he be allowed to play the lead in ANNIE. I'd like to have seen that one!]



That's the director of LENNY HENRY: IN PIECES on the right there. This is while they were still working on the shot, so he was a little tense. I have to admit that I couldn't understand why Lenny kept doing it. They had the shot, why not move on? Then he did a take and while we were watching it everyone was laughing. Lenny came back to have a look at that one. As he watched it, HE laughed. That's the shot he was waiting for.



One of the nights I was there, Lenny took me to see JOOLS HOLLAND not too far from his and Dawn's place in Reading. I'm not really a jazz fan, per se, but it was certainly much better jazz than I was used to hearing. It was only later that I found out that he was, you know, JOOLS HOLLAND! We went backstage at the intermission and I got this "All Access" badge to wear (Lenny didn't need one: he was one of the reasons that us ordinary folks want backstage passes: "And guess who I saw back there? LENNY HENRY!") (There's a downside to that: Lenny was -- apart from Jools Holland -- the only famous person back there, so we did a quick sweep, said hello to Jools Holland -- and then went back to our seats). I stuck my AAA backstage pass onto the back of one of my theatre tickets to keep it in "mint".



The sad part of all this was that when I arrived and the cab driver picking me up at Heathrow asked "You're over from America are you? Visiting relatives?" I decided to show off and said actually I was visiting a friend, Lenny Henry. And he said with a voice dripping malice "Your friend Lenny has been a Very. Naughty. Boy." This was the first I heard of the News of the World scandal -- Lenny caught cheating on Dawn French. YI! And I was walking into the middle of this? [Continued in Part 2...]

I Was Lenny Henry's 40th Birthday Present

I WAS LENNY HENRY'S 40TH BIRTHDAY PRESENT:
a true-life Dave Sim adventure

It really started with a phone call from Neil Gaiman. Did I remember the English comedian that he told me about who was a huge CEREBUS fan? Um, yeah. The one with the Cerebus rug. (There was this English outfit that used to do tapestries and rugs of comics characters. Didn't ask permission or pay royalties but just did these really, you know, nice rugs and tapestries). That's the one, says Neil. I had a call from his wife Dawn and she wants to get him something Cerebus-related for his 40th birthday which is coming up and she wanted to know how to contact you. Is it okay if I give her your number?  Uh, sure!

So Dawn calls and she's very nice.  And right away, I wanted to turn it into a photorealism thing (as I did just about everything from the mid-90s on). Can you tell him you need a picture of him looking REALLY SURPRISED? Don't tell him what it's for, just tell him you need him looking REALLY SURPRISED. And then send me the pictures.

(Wow. You know how long ago this was? they were POLAROIDS! I know! Back when the earth was still cooling!)

So, she did.  No problem.  Life with a comedian, I figured. "Lenny! Look Really Surprised!"  He probably didn't give it a second thought let alone ask what it was for.

So my idea was that I would do this portrait of him looking surprised and give Dawn a good price on the two-page spread in MINDS pages 188-189 and then she could get them framed together so he's looking at this multi-levelled story point of everyone being surprised -- at the ancient aardvark's suicide -- and LENNY would be surprised and there would be a PICTURE of him looking surprised looking back at him.

Well, Dawn thought it was a good idea, so like I said, I gave her a good price and got the address from her to ship it to.  I figured if Lenny was as famous as Neil said he was, he would be the one paying for it, so let's not put too big a dent in his wallet, right?  He's a Cerebus fan.  So, I'm talking about this to...someone.  In Kitchener. I forget who. Oh, wait. It was Lynn, Chris's wife.  Chris is the guy who looks like Lionel Richie on the cover of CHURCH & STATE I pointing.  That was his nickname: Richie. Lynn's English. That's why I thought, hey, she's probably heard of Lenny. So I said, "Have you ever heard of Lenny Henry, the English comedian?"  And she says, Oh, yeah, he's good.  And I said, "Well, guess what? His wife is getting me to do a picture of him for his birthday and matting it with a two-page Cerebus spread."  And Lynn goes, "DAWN FRENCH?"  And I go [blink blink] Yeah. How did you know Lenny's wife's name? Well, I got an SW1 earful for that one. Vicar of Dibley, French & Saunders, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.  And slunk home.  Where the next thing I had to do was to type a cover letter to go with the two pieces of, um, art and send them to Lenny's, uh, you know...wife.  Who -- as it turns out -- from what Lynn said, uh, and it seemed to me as well that...uh, she was ... well, it was pretty much sure that she would be um, paying for the, uh, birthday present, you know...

Hoo boy. Well, I made a clean breast of it. EXACTLY how wrong I had gotten it. Picturing her as some leggy supermodel trophy wife.  Hoo boy.  I mean, it's one of those things that you CAN pretend it didn't happen, but... you could never really see yourself as an honest person again.  How do you make amends for that? Well, what I thought was: tell you what.  Instead of just giving Lenny the pictures as a birthday present, how about if I fly over there and you can surprise Lenny with ME?  I'll pay half my airfare and -- even if you don't go for it -- you'll always have this letter to show anyone who wants a good laugh at my expense anytime Lenny mentions me (which, if he was a Cerebus fan, was likely to be WAY too often).

Well, she decided to go for it. So over I flew. Conveniently they had a flat in Soho they used for guests so I got to stay there and I met Dawn at the Groucho Club where they were both members.  I had still never seen any of her work but she was definitely funny.  So, the plan was: she would take Lenny to a really nice restaurant with the present and I'd be in the back hiding. By the way, she says, what kind of food do you like? French, oddly enough. Umm. French. That would take a little research.
So anyway, she finds this, like 5-Star French restaurant called L'Ortolan.  And arranged for a driver to pick me up and drive me over there for brunch.  So I get dropped by this lounge and everyone is (this was funny) LOOKING at me.  The staff.  Um. Is it okay if I smoke? (it was my last year of smoking) Boom ashtray. Boom matches. More LOOKING.  It's just by association. So this is LENNY HENRY's birthday present!!  I'm thinking, oh, right. They don't actually come here.  She's had to rustle up a French restaurant for ME. So I sat there and smoked and...was looked at.  And finally someone says, "Mr. Sim? It's time."  So I get up and walk around the corner into the dining room a few feet from the table where Lenny has just opened the package.  And he stands up in the middle of this incredibly POSH restaurant, knocking over his chair in the process and goes "Oh My God! It's DAVE SIM!"

So it was a very funny moment and a very funny brunch.  Because the place was reasonably crowded, right?  But it's all these incredibly POSH English people.  And I can FEEL them in the room, going "THAT's Lenny Henry.  THAT's Dawn French.  But WHO IN THE HELL IS DAVE SIM?"  And because they're incredibly posh English people, NO ONE CAN ask or so much as look over at us.

I'd have to say that was one of the major highlights of my life: being WHO THE HELL IS DAVE SIM? In an incredibly POSH -- and suitably 5-star rated -- French restaurant.

Well, I've seen a great deal of both of their work since (obviously). They're both brilliant, funny people.
Lenny Henry is a British actor, writer and comedian. He is currently receiving rave reviews for his role in Fences at The Duchess Theatre in London's West End. His 40th birthday was in 1998.

Dawn French is an British actress, writer, and comedian best known for starring in French & Saunders and The Vicar of Dibley. Dawn was married to Lenny Henry between 1984 and 2010.

I'm reading Cerebus, at the moment, we're coming up to episode 300 now and its building to the big finale. Dave Sim the writer creator of Cerebus the Aardvark, has crafted an immensely dense, challenging and at times hilarious study of a very eventful life. He started writing it in the seventies, so I should think when he's finished he'll want a good lie down.

Cerebus is over! He’s finally dead and gone, and now Dave Sim can lie down after 30 years of graft, and not have to worry about meeting deadlines or being quite so obsessive. He’s finished his masterwork. Perhaps, now Dave will be able to have some fun and relax a little.

Thanks for your fax of May 25 and the congratulations on the conclusion of Cerebus. Very much appreciated, especially the "Big respect" part. I've stood next to you, you know. As big goes, you're right up there.

A few years ago, I did a revised version of a movie script that Lenny Henry had written, basically for the experience of writing a film script in the way that I did the Animated Cerebus Portfolio - to get it out of my system if I could. Which it did in both cases. Got animation and movies out of my system. Okay, I now know what that is, now I don't have to go after a deal to do animation or to write a movie script. I could cheerfully do it again, under the same terms: give me the script and I'll write my own version of it but not on a collaborative basis. I'll just redo it and give it back and you can throw all of it out, keep some of it, keep all of it. If someone offered me money to do that - to be a script doctor - I would probably do it. Only one version, though, no meetings, no revisions. My agreement with Lenny was: if the movie gets made, I don't want any of the money or my name on the film. I just want to know what it's like to do this. Nothing ever happened with it, that I know of.

...I was actually very impressed with what he had come up with - the script read like a really good all-ages Hollywood film and it was a great experience to see how a movie is built and how condensed the writing needs to be. But I'm a terrible collaborator, I'm afraid, and, according to Neil Gaiman - who read my version of the script at Lenny's place - I used way too many explicit directions to the actors and actresses. Complete control freak, that's me.
