Since this is A Moment of Cerebus, people will send in all sorts of Cerebus related stuff. Like my pal Steve who sent in:
On eBay:
Vintage Cerebus #91 Original Comic Art Dave Sim Appears in 4 Panels! | eBay![]()
Page is approx. Item is in great condition. See pictures for more details. This item is a must have addition to any collection.
This is the message I sent the seller:
FYI, while this art is amazingly similar to what Dave Sim and Gerhard drew years ago, it does not match what was published.
The differences are subtle (the look of the three 'stomps' for example, position of the stars, thickness of the bricks Cerebus is on).
Also the Cerebus figures themselves would've had a 20% screen overlay and there was a type of border tape used between the panels.
For reference: page 811 of the "Church & State Vol. 2" phonebook.
Best -
Steve
Seen here:
Well, I was gonna use it in a post, but I was on vacation, and then Dave had sent a bunch of stuff, and yadda yadda yadda, when I got a Facebookee messenger message from noted Filthy Hippie (and Yahoo Group Moderator/former Dave's eBitch) Jeff Tundis
| Seen here in need of a haircut at the Ye Bookees of Cerebus show in Olean NY |
Who said:
My boss recently picked up the page on the left, which is obviously not the published work. You know if this is a Sim recreation? Or some fan fake? I can't contact Dave obviously. It's on ebay right now.
Well, I asked Dave as part of the 44 page Faux I sent with the 11/2025 Please Hold For Dave Sim questions, but I won't get an answer for a week or two, but then I remember I can email Gerhard:
Hi Ger!
I hope retirement is still agreeing with you.
Question: Does this look like something you've seen before?
Tundis's boss got it, and he asked me if it was a recreation by Dave (which I'm asking Dave), but then I thought this might be another of those photocopied pages from the crazy 80s, like that not the cover to issue 80 I got sent to me. Like, maybe you at some point (possibly with alcohol or cannabis involved) mounted the copy on a piece of board and finished it?
It's a long shot, but if I don't ask, the world will never know...
Say "hey" to Shelley for me, and for God's sake don't expend too much energy on this!
Thanks in advance,

And sure enough, Ger responded:
Hey Matt!It sold on eBay for $9.99USD. I hope whoever got it didn't think they got a steal.
Retirement is GREAT. I think I've finally found my true calling.
I have my To Do list. Each morning I look through it and say, "I don't feel like doing ANY of that."
And then I don't.
I just saw that "art" for the first time a few days ago. Charles Costas (my Art Guy) sent me a heads-up about it being a counterfeit page.
As I said to him:
It's far too poorly executed to be considered a forgery
but if somebody is trying to pass off fan-art as a genuine page
then it's definitely fraud.
While it KINDA looks like page 15 from issue 91 there are glaringly obvious differences.
Not the least of which (and I didn't see the back of this before) is that we NEVER would have used Bainbridge 80 illustration board. It's too textured and is meant for pencil or pastel work. We used Bainbridge 172; smooth surface for inking.
If somebody did this just for fun and because they liked the page, then it's great.
If they, or someone else later is trying to pass this off as genuine Sim/Gerhard art, then rot in hell, pal.
I hope Tundis's boss didn't pay too much for it.
Hope you and the family are doing well.
Best,
Ger
And now we know what to look for in the future.
Here's a better look for those of you who are fascinated with this kinda stuff:
Thanks to Steve, Jeff, and most especially Gerhard.

Our very own Jen DiGiacomo is part of a film production titled The Day Elvis Died. She'll never ask anybody here, but they're crowdfunding to finish the post production on the movie. (It's set in 1977, will a certain obscure Canadian cartoon aardvark make a cameo? (No. Elvis died in August. Cerebus wasn't published until December. Any appearance in the flick would be an anachronism that would ruin the movie for everybody. EVERYBODY!).) Here's the first trailer.

Cerebus' screen tone is 30%. I don't mean to be a know-it-all, but that information is carved into my brain. The solid grey Cerebus is 30% black. After 86 issues of Cerebus In Hell? I see the little jerk in my sleep sometimes.
My apologies on the double post.
I don't remember how much it went for with the original auction (Tundis could find out) but it was more than $10. I'd say the $$ was refunded when the 'forgery' was revealed.
The seller via eBay states:
"Yes, it certainly fooled me when I bought it. I don't get fooled often but this one got me! It came in an estate so I know the person who sold it to me didn't know either."
So probably now a mystery forever about who and why this was made.
Steve
During the previous ebay auction listing, this art page was bid up to several hundred dollars. Then suddenly, the auction had ended early. It was pretty obvious that it was not work done by the creators. Perhaps somebody informed the seller of this mid-auction and they did the right thing.
It's like the dam duck statchoo.
If I squint, I can SORTA see retirement off on the horizon - and:
"I have my To Do list. Each morning I look through it and say, "I don't feel like doing ANY of that."
And then I don't."
is pretty much what I hope mine is like. Ger's got the right idea.
Do they give out Pulitzer Prizes to blogs? Excellent work. This is actually investigative journalism here. You helped get to the bottom of a real-life mystery. Love it.
