Cerebus Around the World and Web #70 by Oliver Simonsen

Hi, Everybody!

As we do on Sundays, sometimes click for bigger, sometimes click for nothing, it's a gamble!

Oliver Simonsen:

Can an aardvark get a little privacy as he trades his "Northern Barbarian Helmet" for a "Merchant Vest"?
As usual this week's wrap up covers from Saturday morning to Saturday morning.

European Cerebus, Asterix, NetFlix announcement - will it do for Franco-Belgian comics in the US what Sailor Moon did for Manga?
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/netflix-animation-series-asterix-obelix

Asterix was very popular in Canada - afterall French is their national language...and here from early 1970s there's a storyline where the barbarians become acclimated to high society:). They recently did a very good movie based on it too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSOIp4aAWPc

While having fun speculating on the wide array of influences (aside from the well known like Barry Windsor Smith)...howabout Dick Van Dyke? In a recent episode of WandaVision much was made of the seminal “It May Look Like a Walnut" Dick Van Dyke episode. The episode is "...one of the series’ best-remembered and most highly regarded entries".
"Rob wakes up the morning after watching this movie to find its facets overtaking his reality. His wife and child gorge themselves on walnuts; his friends gradually develop strange behavior and robotic cadence; he discovers a glowing gem inside a walnut shell; a British-accented Danny Thomas refers to Rob as the last remaining Earth human. And then Rob himself, through a manner of visual effect rivaled by the MCU itself, loses his thumbs; this solidifies his fate as “one of them.”"

If i remember correctly Dave Sim said he was a Dick Van Dyke fan - hence why maybe "The Flame Jewel" transforms into a walnut, of all things, at the end of issue 1?

Italian review of Cerebus Church and State 2: "Taken in the entirety of its sixty chapters, Church & State represents perhaps the highest point of the series" "...also important for the experiments that the author carries out..." "Church & State II proves that Cerebus, in particular, and comics, in general, are an effective vehicle for telling something deeply personal and with an intensity and continuity rarely seen later in North American comics."
