OFF-WHITE HOUSE BULLETIN 1800 hrs 2/13/17

Owing to the (latest) controversy surrounding the "I Don't Believe Dave Sim Is a Misogynist" petition (of which I wasn't aware until earlier today) which has effectively (as I'm sure it was intended to do) undermined a lot of hard work over the last nine years on the part of many people on my behalf, beginning tomorrow, I will no longer be answering comments and questions on A MOMENT OF CEREBUS unless they are prefaced with the words I DON'T BELIEVE DAVE SIM IS A MISOGYNIST (preferably all in caps).

This policy will be in effect until such time as there is, once more, a "hard number" of signatories (re)-attached to the Petition box to the right of this page (at which time, I will reassess the level of my participation on AMOC based on what that number turns out to be).

I wish there was some other recourse but since this situation has the appearance of "wishing the Petition away" I've had to come up with something that will make it plain that that's not going to happen.

Ever.

I look forward to hearing from and exchanging thoughts with my (many!) I DON'T BELIEVE DAVE SIM IS A MISOGYNIST supporters in the coming days.

I just did a google search... and the petition page is not there!???

Did someone deleted the page???
Is that even possible???

If so, I submit to have a PETITION PAGE on CEREBUSDOWNLOADS.com
all anyone has to do is send an email with their full name to:
CerebusTech@gmail.com
with the subject line having ONLY:
"I DON'T BELIEVE DAVE SIM IS A MISOGYNIST"
and at the end of every week, I'll update the page.

Thoughts?

I DON'T BELIEVE DAVE SIM IS A MISOGYNIST, but really, isn't this veering into the "self-parody lane?"

I will resign the petition when a solution arrises but I'm not typing that every time. Maybe I won't ask a question unless someone types I KNOW JAKE CAPPS IS A LOYAL FAN. I know Dave will never get rid of the petition. I once asked him to please let it go...on my birthday...I was quickly educated on why he would never.

Just, you know, for the record.

Can't believe I've been working for Dave long enough to not be surprised by something like this.

I'll talk to Alfonso and see about giving him a hand re-entering the names he has collected over the past year. If this is some sort of test or a challenge, well, some of us don't give up so easy.

I DO BELIEVE DAVE SIM IS A MISOGYNIST and I've had my fill of self-aggrandizing horseshit for one lifetime. (And I do mean lifetime - since TMNT #8, in fact, and indeed, as I've related a few times, my big gift for my 13th birthday 31 gotdamb years ago was the then brand spanking new HIGH SOCIETY phonebook)

Tim, great blog, but I'm done.

Everyone enjoy yourselves. And the one or two I've actually written to in real life, I'll catch you in email.

Dave is, of course, free to do anything he wants for any reason he wants. I think a predictable result of this action is to further his reputation as a joke and a petulant child.

It's very like Dave to lash out at a third party (AMOC) without knowing what's going on (did anyone figure out what's with the iPetition?) when his little fee-fees are hurt. You're quite the special snowflake, aren't you, Dave? (Not that he'll answer me.) But thanks for the biggest laugh you've given me in a while.

Sometimes Dave is his own worst enemy. But, as I said, his choice. And if he skips reading every comment that doesn't begin with his Loyalty Oath, he might have more free time to work on SDoAR.

Wow, the iPetition is gone. Did the site delete it?

I think Margret Liss mentioned she has a mastercopy of all the names, plus if Alfonso and Sandeep have copies of all the new ones in the last year and a half, well, at last it hasn't been all for nothing.

Truth be told, that site wasn't very user friendly. Maybe there's a different way to keep it to Dave's standard, but on an easier format.

For those asking what happened with the iPetition, as much as is known is in the comment thread of the "Horned Warrior" post: https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=2837001751311078781&postID=7970860117625598672&isPopup=true.

From what I've gathered the online petition got axed by the website gurus running the thing when some mendicant complained that his email was used to sign it without his knowledge. Just goes to show you how quickly one bad apple can spoil the lot in today's day and age of "pandering to the minority lest they be offended".

Hopefully it'll get reinstated in some form, it was finally starting to get some traction thanks to the tireless efforts of Alfonso and his crew.

Dave, I really enjoyed reading the commentary on issue 5 from the Swords introduction.

I find myself at that exact same point as I work on issue five of my own comic book series. There is a constant struggle between trying to "Fudge" the art, just for convenience sake and trying to make it look good. It all depends for me, on how soon the kids got to bed that night, and how tired I am. Some days are finger lickin' good, and some are just arse wipin' bad. But I'm learning as I go and that's all that matters. Eventually I'll formulate my own "Artist's Bag of Tricks" and be able to breeze through an issue without too much mental torment. It is comforting to know that you were once in that place as well.

On the upside, of things. I did get the 3rd issue of Jack Grimm printed, and a copy is on its way to you as you read this. Let me know when it gets there.

Unfortunately, there is a general mentality that "petitions don't work". Despite the fact that clearly something is promised to happen if enough people sign, whereas "Bring back (favorite canceled TV show)" never gets anywhere even if they get a million people signing it. That's why I took so long to sign it, so I know it's probably another reason why some people who don't believe Dave is a misogynist haven't signed it. Petitions, in the digital age especially, are seen as powerless.

(I do find it interesting, in rereading Cerebus, that the first time the M-word comes up in the series was, to my knowledge, when a Fake Michael Moorcock called Dave that in a letter posted in the Note from the President circa Melmoth.)

Anyway, the whole reason I came here today was to tell Dave that they're remaking "The Beguiled"! There's a trailer for it and everything. It's truly a movie I only even know about because of Cerebus.

I DON'T CARE IF DAVE SIM IS A MISOGYNIST.

Really, really don't.

He's not a neighbor, not my boss, isn't hitting on my wife or daughters.
He created a comic I've enjoyed for decades, but that's it.

In the end, it's only a comic book.

I guess fans giving $200,000+ in Kickstarter money to support Dave & his archive over the years means less than signing an online petition. Strange.

Dave is also overestimating fans desire to debate politics on "A Moment of Cerebus" when they mostly come here to discuss Cerebus and comics in general.

Looks like the petition's back up...

I signed the petition years ago. I did so for two reasons:

1. I don't believe Dave Sim is a misogynist.
2. Maybe Dave would would consider appearing in public at some point if the petition received enough signatures.

Dave has commented on and answered direct questions I've posted here on occasion. Was he cross-referencing my name to a master list of petition signers before doing so? If so does that master list exist in hard copy form or backed up digitally somewhere other then the iPetition servers? If he wasn't cross-referencing my name with a master list of petition signers then why should this change the way he deals with me (us) now?

I don't mind publicly declaring that I don't think Dave's a misogynist. I publicly encourage people to read his work, online and otherwise. When I hear the misogynist label applied I'll put forth my reasons for disagreeing with that assessment, but I don't cut those people who are not convinced of my arguments out of my life. I support the kickstarters to the best of my ability. I do all of this while being actively opposed to most of Dave's sociopolitical views.

But having to state this belief at the head of any comment I may post at AMOC? Or, rather, any post I'm hoping Dave will read or comment on? Nah. I've said it publicly and it's on the record. If that's not enough for Dave then that's his business. But I find it difficult to understand his reasoning in this matter.

Actually I recently watched the "extra features" in the Star Trek original series DVD box set, and there's a segment discussing one time that actually *did* work: in 1969, it got a third season for Trek. Just think, without that petition, the "space hippies" episode would never have been made!

Jeff Seiler said...

Tony, I have that box set, too, and I remember that petition and that episode. Talk about 60-year-old writers, producers, and director trying to be "hip"! It's amazing, when you watch the original series, that it became a franchise.

"Franchise." Now there's an ugly word. "Star Trek" had two good runs: 1966-69, and "Next Generatioon," 1987-94 or whatever it was. And a small handful of the movies. All the rest of the crap carrying the Star Trek "brand" (shudder) is so much Hollywood tripe.

Jeff Seiler said...

Tony--I actually think that the new run of Star Trek movies are very good. I haven't seen the Star Wars: Rogue One movie yet, but I think that both franchises have upped their games.

Aaaaand, here we go, back to the old Yahoo days...

Ugh.
