Nobody Feeling Brave Today?

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

So “VGDC Maroro” had requested a couple items from the notebooks and we started looking at them a couple weeks ago in Chasing The Roach Up the Tower. One of those items was “how Dave created a sense of heart-pounding intensity with Cerebus and Roach's "chase" up Skull Mountain.”

That chase started in notebook 9 which we saw in that last notebook entry and continues in Dave’s 10th notebook. On page 8 we see some thumbnail layouts for page 18 and 19 of the roach coming towards the camera. Along with some dialogue for the Roach and his feelings for Astoria.

Notebook 10, page 8
On the next notebook page, we get another page layout, though larger and less complete. The roach reaching the top of the tower and Astoria watching him.
