MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.
We've already seen a bit from Dave's notebook #17 - see "Po's monologue about Bran" and then the a three column series on "The Good and Bad of Comics in the Early 90s". As this notebook covers issues 153 to 164 in the early 1990s, there is a bit more in it I'd like to show you. A tour diary of sorts, from his US Tour 1992.
On the notebook's page 55 and 56 Dave was writing some dialogue for Suenteus Po, and the on page 57 we see he must've been at his hotel as he jolts down "Oops, Mitch just got here for the Midnight Comics signing."

Then on the next page we see Dave writing about how Mitch wasn't coming to pick him up for another half hour for the Midnight Comics signing? This is actually part of the Note From the President for issue #160. Though it is way down the bottom of the note.

This starting out at the back of the notebook would also explain why on the next page - page 60 - we see what becomes the start of the NFtP for Cerebus #160, a bit about the Kansas City tour stop on May 31, 1992.

The first time I ever met Dave in person was at Clint's Comics in Kansas City, MO, at that stop on the tour. Stood in line for a long time, only to stammer out something about loving his comic and then getting an autograph on God-knows-what.
Then, I went out and grabbed a six-pack of the local beer, Boulevard (still a going business that does very well locally and can be found now all over the Midwest). Trying to be funny, but really just being an asshole, I kept one of the beers for myself and set the six-pack holder of bottles down next to him and said that it was for later back at the hotel, for him. Or something like that.
My then girlfriend was with me throughout and thought I was bug-fuck nuts.
It would be another 13 years before I would see Dave again. But we had some nice letters exchanged in between, including six of them that he printed in Aardvark Comment.
And then we went on to the ten year correspondence, excerpts of which you've been reading at Twitter (you have been reading them, right?), but which you can start reading here on this Saturday (God-willing), and then subsequent Saturdays thereafter.
Tune in for insightful comments and occasional funny bits (tee-hees, that is).
Mmmm, Boulevard….(Homer Simpson voice)
Brewed and bottled on Southwest Boulevard, just steps east of the Kansas/Missouri border!
They make an unfiltered wheat beer that's just perfect for a lazy Midwestern summer's day. There's one in my fridge right now. Mmmm-MM.
Dave was in the Twin Cities on the '92 tour the weekend of a good friend's wedding (I was an usher); his bridal suite was in the same hotel as the tour signing. (It was also the weekend Genesis were in town on the We Can't Dance tour.)
