Feldan Flagg Roach

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

This past April in On Governing Part Who Knows, where we saw a bit of Cerebus book that didn’t make it to an issue of Cerebus, was the most recent time we looked at notebook #7. That notebook covers Cerebus issues #59 through 70 and had 160 pages scanned.

Notebook 7, page 53
The bottom of page 53 has a list of things that happen in Church & State, a few things that didn’t happen:
“Cerebus Messiah”
- Bran Mak Mufin returns – prophecies matched with Weisshaupt
- Feldan Flagg Roach
- Invasion of Lower Felda by Upper Felda
- Cerebus nominated for Pope
- Cerebus rebels against Weisshaupt
- Elf and Cerebus make ‘boom’ together
- Elf refuses to cooperate
- Charles X. Claremont is behind it all
- Countess returns
- Priestess cards explained Theresa gives Weisshaupt a scepter
- Cannons don’t stop invasion
- Mind Game IV Cerebus sees black tower
On page 56 of the notebook we see Dave’s schedule for May 1984. Two pages a day for many days. The weekends crossed out – need a weekend off! What is odd is May 1 – 7th show pages 1 to 10 being done, but then on May 8th through 10th it says “layout plan #63” and the numbers start back up on May 11th. He then goes to do a 20-page comic plus cover in 11 days. 11 days.  I wonder what the other 8 pages were for.

Notebook 7, page 56
The cover sketch is for ‘Appointment’, issue #62. The only resemblance it has to the actual cover of #62 is that Weisshaupt is on it.
