Swords Of Cerebus Vol 6: The Supplement

The first printing of Swords Of Cerebus Vol 6 contained a printing error. Swords 6 was intended to reprint 5 Cerebus issues (#21-25) instead of the usual four issues per volume, however, in the first printing, #25 was omitted in error. A 24-page supplement was printed in an attempt to rectify the problem, as explained in Deni Loubert's inside cover 'A Note To Our Readers' reproduced below.

The thing that amazes me is that I've owned a first printing of Swords 6 for over 30 years now and read it many times, but never noticed there was anything wrong with it till Tim told me about this supplement a few weeks ago. How dozy can you get?

You're not the only one. It's because we never re-read these in full, just the intros, and hit the phone book up for the stories...

So how did this work? Was the supplement free? Or did patrons have to bring in a copy of their Sword Vol. 6 as proof-of-purchase in order to get one?

I was a very regular visitor to London's biggest comics shop in those days and I never heard nor saw anything about the supplement. How did you get hold of yours, Tim?

Tony,
I'm not really sure. I purchased my copy of Swords Vol 6 by mail order and was surprised some weeks later to receive the Supplement in the post. Quite how Dave and Deni expected other readers to claim their copy I really don't know, especially as it wasn't publicised in the Cerebus monthly (IIRC). That said, it was pretty decent of them to at least try and resolve the problem.

Ok, that is pretty cool. I bought all of the phone books in the early 80's, but i bought them from my local comic book store. I never heard of this supplement

I purchased Swords #6 with the supplement when it came out and I can't remember if Swords #6 was released without the supplement (issue#25). I'm thinking future reprints were published with issue #25 included.

The first printing definitely went out to some comics shops without the supplement, at least here in London where I bought my Swords 6 at Forbidden Planet in Denmark Street. US copies may have been treated differently, I guess.

I agree with Tim in applauding Dave & Deni's attempt to put the problem right in so far as it was practical to do so.

I bought the truncated version, not knowing any different, at a comic shop when I was on vacation in Panama City, FL. Discovered much later that it was missing an issue, and took it back to that shop ("The Money Haven"--it was originally a coin collector store), probably a year afterward buying it. The owner said he'd received the supplemental fill-in copy described here, and had meant to hang on to it for whomever (me, as it turned out) had bought that copy of Swords, but by that time he no longer knew where it was.

He gave me a copy of the updated complete version for free. Nice guy. We had a fun conversation when he retired and sold off his shop many years later, not long after I moved into that town as an adult.
