Playing Diamondback with Onliu Freelancers

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

With 194 pages scanned covering Cerebus #20 to 28, notebook #1 is one of Dave’s largest Cerebus notebooks. We last saw it in November of 2019 in The Way to Sannozay. Yes, I do know the way. Kind of.

There was a couple of later pages in it that had some pretty cool looking pen and marker sketches. Like on page 168:

Notebook 1, page 168
Oh, and I can think of plenty of things more entertaining than playing diamondback with anyone, even Onliu freelancers.

Notebook 1, page 170
Some sketches of Dirty Drew and Fleagle, our Onliu freelancers. The money won from these two chumps while playing diamondback against them can’t make up for playing that game.

We've seen that sketch before - or one like it - and I'm not the only one who thinks she looks like Marianne Faithfull.
