Fascination & Fruition

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

The last time we looked at Dave Sim's notebook #8 I had just gotten back from a trip to Ottawa to watch the Bruins take on the Senators way in March of last year and I had stayed at the Regency. So of course, the entry was entitled A Stay at the Regency.  Dave's 8th Cerebus notebook covers issues #70 through 79 and had 86 pages scanned.

On page 36 of the notebook, we see a small preliminary sketch of Cerebus #73 pages one through three.

Notebook 8, page 36
As you can see by comparing the thumbnails to the final pages, pretty close:

Cerebus #73, pages 1 through 3
We also see some of Mrs Henrot-Gutch yelling at Boobah. That woman's blood pressure must be astronomical.
