Seeing Sound #6: Breaking Bones

Cerebus #136 (July 1990)
Art by Dave Sim & Gerhard
C. W. MARSHALL:
(from 'Seeing Sound' in Cerebus The Barbarian Messiah, 2012)
Sim shows the momentary sound of a thumb being broken with fragmented skeletal lettering. As with the snap of Gwen Stacy's neck [in Amazing Spider-Man #121], its size indicates importance, rather than actual volume. In contrast, the lingering scream just continues to grow, stretching out beyond the panel itself, as Mrs Thatcher quietly walks away down a shadowed alley.

Do you have a favourite example of Dave Sim's innovative lettering in Cerebus that you'd like to see featured here on A Moment Of Cerebus? Send in your selection (the issue and page number will do), together with a brief explanation of its appeal/impact on you, to: momentofcerebus [at] gmail [dot] com
