Heir to the throne Eddie Khanna sent me:

On my last night in Kitchener (Friday July 12), Dave and I had just finished having dinner around 9pm in the upstairs “Study section” of the Rich Uncle Tavern (highly recommended. Check it out if you ever have the opportunity: https://www.richuncletavern.ca)

(we had tried twice previously to have dinner in the study section of the restaurant upstairs, and both times been told to come back, as the study section wasn’t open, but would be the next time we came in. Finally, on Friday, one of the supervisors went the extra mile and opened it up just for us).

…and had just left the establishment when we coincidentally walked straight into the “Cruising on King” Annual Classic Car Show taking place in downtown Kitchener…

…three to four blocks of around 30? classic cars from different decades, all parked along both sides of the closed off streets of downtown Kitchener with people walking up and down checking them out. Dave and I had the same thought: “Wonder if there’s a ’56 Corvette?”

Dave had to go back to the hotel a few blocks down for his prayer time, while I went on to check out the cars, and we arranged to meet afterwards.

Walking up the street, there were a lot of nice looking vintage cars, definitely eye catching and head turning, but no ’56 Corvette (which I really wasn’t expecting to find. I mean, what would be the chances of that?). I got to the end of the exhibition and turned around and began to walk in the other direction.

I was almost at the other end of the show when I saw it.

A Convertible Corvette. Not only a Convertible Corvette, but a Convertible Corvette that looked like Stan Drake’s car.

It was definitely a very nice looking car, getting a lot attention from the crowd, more so than the other cars. I went up to the owner who was standing next to it:

“Is that a ’56?”
“No, it’s a ’58. But very similar to a ’56.”

I began to circle around it. Once, twice, three times. Took out the phone and started snapping pictures. Paused to talk to the owner and tell him that I’m helping research a story for someone writing something that involves a ’56 Corvette, and who (to put it mildly) would be very interested to see this up close, and I’m just going to go and get him, and even though it’s getting close to the end of the event, would he be here for a bit longer?

He said he would be.

I walked, no, pretty much ran back to the other end of the exhibition where Dave’s hotel was, and Dave turned the corner onto the street just as I got there.

“Dave! ’58 Corvette at the other end!”

We began to, I won’t say run, but let’s just say walk very, very quickly towards it, with me thinking the whole time, “I hope it’s still there. I hope it’s still there.”

It was still there.

Now it was Dave’s turn to start circling the car, and I began to take pictures. Dave started talking to the owner (“So you’re the guy writing the story?”).

Even though there was a sign saying not to touch the car, Dave got permission to sit in it, first the driver’s side, and then getting out and into the passenger side, all the while analyzing the car up close and asking questions.

I was trying to get as many pictures and video as possible, trying to focus and while Dave continued asking questions and getting a better sense of the car. The owner mentioned some upcoming Corvette shows in Ontario, and gave us the name of an organization called the “Canadian Council of Corvette Clubs”(or “Quad C”) that he suggested we check out, as they might have a ’56 Corvette.

The sun was setting, and people were packing up and getting ready to leave. This was one of the last cars left on the street. Dave asked for the owner’s name and number, and I took it down.

His name was Stan.

I’ll be posting more pics and video to the Patreon site later.

-Eddie
 Well thanks Eddie!

Highlights for Aardvarks

Hi, Everybody!

The "Manly" one returns with Kickstarter Highlights from Dave Sim:

(FROM DAVE SIM): Dave Sim, creator - This was typed into my CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER EIGHT Notes at the Walper Terrace Hotel 9 July 19, 8 am ET and posted by Eddie when he came in at 9:30 to continue work on STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND Volume Three.

Productive R Us.

Howdy, Kickstarter Supporters! It's really helping to do these shorter Kickstarters more frequently. I think one of the things we want to do either next time or soon is to post daily where we are relative to POSTCARD FROM HELL No.1 and No.2.

Why?

That ties in with my New Theory:

New Theory: We're all on the same 2019 financial roller-coaster ride, only some of us are in "bare subsistence" mode and some of us in "whoa! I have disposable income. How did THAT happen?" mode. Consequently, on any given campaign we're counting on the latter PLEDGE PARTNER HEROES (and HEROINES) -- people who, for whatever reason, are CRESTING and, consequently, feeling a little more secure financially HERE AND NOW i.e. just prior to July 20, 2019 -- to take up the slack for the PLEDGE PARTNER HEROES (and HEROINES) of campaigns past who are either "in a trough" or think they are. We have SOME people who NEVER go into a trough (and where would we be without them?) but most people, I think, are like me. I either FEEL wealthy or I FEEL poor in any given month. If you FEEL poor this month, please don't let the CIH? make it worse by FEELING you have to Pledge.

We're all trying to do better financially and for David Birdsong, Sean Robinson, Benjamin Hobbs and me that means making more money this time than we did last time. Doesn't really matter HOW much more, just as long as our income doesn't go DOWN (like our circulation keeps doing: THE IRON MANTICORE is now, officially, the rarest CEREBUS No.1 in existence at roughly 1,600 copies)

Sorry I missed opening weekend. Eddie Khanna and I are "workshopping" the succession after my death so everything has been in flux since he arrived last Wednesday.

Since the last campaign, I've finished my part of THE AMICABLE SPIDER-VARK No.1, our second 48-page annual scheduled for July 2020 (now, officially, David Birdsong's new favourite issue) and David's about 6 pages into finishing the final digital version. And I'm about 6 pages into the August 2020 SPIDER-WHORE in the mock-up stage and about page 10 in the rough scripting. As long as I'm a year ahead, I'm good. Being a year and part of a month ahead, I'm a little more than good.

And I just got David's THE VAULT OF CEREBUS No.1 parody cover mock-up along with a list of strips that could go in that one -- some leftover zombie strips from Benjamin's THE VARKING DEAD No.1, David's 4-page "Diamondback in Hell?" -- a perfect Halloween 2020 fit (and the last issue before the 2020 US election). He says he has CEREBUS: THE LAST AARDVARK IN HELL? No.1 (parody of KAMANDI No.1). So, we're almost through 2020.

Now we just need YOUR HELP to get us from here to there!

More soon!
And:
Dave Sim, creator - Four days left to go in the campaign! I apologize for having been "out of touch" while I get caught up on everything now that I'm actually back in residence at the Off-White House. Hopefully, we're at or close to (or, being wildly optimistic, HIGHER than) the revenues of POSTCARD FROM HELL No. 2 at the comparable "four days to go" point. I will definitely be posting the last hour or two on Saturday the 20th as we bring this one end for a landing.

Belated thanks to Sean Robinson for his HILARIOUS treatment of the IRON MANTICORE THEME and Ralph Bakshi-ca. 1966 "animation" which I got Eddie to show me on the WIFI at the hotel.

You know, looking at it, I think to myself "it would be great if the stores could use Sean's video to promote TALES OF SOPHISTICATION #1 and IRON MANTICORE #1." But I don't think there's any way to make that happen through the traditional channels, i.e. You can't just link TO the video, you have to provide the stores WITH the video and label it as being in the public domain. "PLEASE use this on your store website to generate sales."

That is, I think it might be one of those things that is only going to work through the CEREBUS LCS links which exist between individual CEREBUS fans -- YOU GUYS -- and your LCS. Show the video to the store owner on your phone and ask if he or she has a way of using it on the store website. Find out what format they need it in and ask Sean to provide that format for you or email it directly to the store.

I'm mentioning this here, because you're a core CEREBUS IN HELL? reader (by virtue of reading the COMMENTS section on the POSTCARD FROM HELL? Kickstarter). We all remain (perhaps foolishly) optimistic that SOMETHING will work to generate sales and either slow the drop in circulation, level it off or improve it, even though nothing has worked so far.
And:
DAVE SIM CREATOR to Chris Johnson!
Hi Chris! Okay, I think we're looking for the GOLDILOCKS SPOT here: We, Your Obedient CIH? WORKAHOLIC TEAM are trying not to take a CUT in pay on POSTCARD FROM HELL No.3 and we're about $300 shy of that (according to my ever-more-porous Grampaw memory, anyway), so if you can come UP from the $150 to $300, we'll give you as much space as you need to get the story told AND commit to tying your story into whatever-CIH?-issue you end up in...
(I have about 10 pages left to go on SPIDER-WHORE No.1 -- August 2020 -- and I'm hoping to have that wrapped up in the next week. The next one I'm working on -- I think -- is BATVARK PENIS No.1 -- September 2020 -- the parody of BATMAN DAMNED No.1 to 3. So far, I've sorted David Birdsong's Dore images into "comedy gold" and "not sure what I would do with this" piles. Another possibility is VAULT OF CEREBUS No.1 -- October 2020 -- which is looking like a bits 'n' pieces horror pastiche and might be easier to link directly to your story. Other possibilities are STRANGERS IN CEREBUS No.1 from Benjamin and Laura which is theoretically done but I haven't seen any of it yet.) (and David Birdsong's JIMMY CEREBUS NO.1 parody of JIMMY CORRIGAN which would tie in with the Chris Ware Typography Gone Mad motif)
CEREBUS IN HELL? is really about (or, rather, About) Creative Freedom -- the closest analogy being comedy club improvisation. Just Be As Funny As You Can. So, if you're interested in "playing" (and you can hit the $300 plateau either in a lump sum or $150 now and $150 over the next few weeks? Months? Goldilocks Spot again) what we would do is put you "in the loop" for the next while on the books that are in progress, e-mailing you our pages as they're finished and you would put us "in the loop" on your story.
We'll keep it confidential, but if we're going to "riff on it, the more we know about it and the farther ahead we know about it the better the link we can do WITH it and TO it.
Like I did with Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman and Frank Miller on SPAWN. Told Alan to throw in a panel or word balloon making Level 8 in Hell some kind of big HEEBIE JEEBIE Terrifying Deal and sent Neil and Frank my script as soon as it was done so they had it to "riff" on. It would have been NICE to SURPRISE all of them with SPAWN 10 but it was more SENSIBLE to help them tie the whole thing together (so we could at least PRETEND we were all worth our 6-figure UR-IMAGE paydays).
And:
DAVE SIM CREATOR

The following was originally sent as a private message to Chris but, on second thought, I think it's a
(maybe? For somebody?) GENERAL INTEREST UPDATE.

You can see the amounts we're dealing with at this point to try to keep the Team from taking a "Kickstarter" pay cut, so "Ask what CEREBUS IN HELL? can do for you AND what you can do for CEREBUS IN HELL?". WE think the CEREBUS IN HELL? No.1 s are really cool and funny. And we believe that [AAGH Dave has typed the following with a strikethrough but Kickstarter is dropping the formatting]2100, 1800, 1700, 1600 people agree with us (little “struck through" humour there: I always wanted to use that function on my MacBook for something). Look at it as "This is your chance to be a part of the RAREST CEREBUS No.1 in existence!". What are the sales going to be DOWN TO a year from now? I've been bumping up the orders for the Cerebus Archive from 1 o or so the first year to 20 to 45 and being VERY stingy about who I give them to. Even though that was the original idea: freebies to hand out to people in town when I try to explain to them what I do for a living. "Comics? Like ... in the newspaper?" Signing the Cerebus Archive copies of LGBTQETC. and FORNICATORS INC. only increased my stinginess to Scroogian Proportions: it felt like having a desktop full of X-MEN and FF #1 'sll MINE! ALL MINE!

Just as I was typing this Chris agreed to play in our sandbox and boost his pledge to $300! VERY COOL! Anybody else up?
And:
DAVE SIM CREATOR - I keep forgetting I have to type that.
Okay, here's a definitely weird/definitely interesting idea as the clock ticks down to "0".
WHAT IF the CIH? TEAM agreed to do a cross-over print with another Indy creator on Kickstarter (whose campaign is doing well and still has a couple of weeks to go)? What we'd be looking for is a Cerebus compatible character. 8.5 x 11 b&w print that we would all sign and the indy creator would make a stretch goal on his or her campaign. And the Cerebus fan who FOUND them and got them to agree to it, would get a cut and a copy of the #1 print.
On a "it doesn't hurt to ask" basis and in Your Official Capacity as Official Cerebus Fans. You're TELLING Dave Sim and Team that they NEED to do a print with (name of Indy creator, name of indy creation).
Anybody want to give it a try.
And Gary Boyarski asked:
Dave, now the the drawing hand is somewhat functional. How about a series of Kickstarters doing a single trading card?
And Dave replied:
Hi Gary! Not being a big trading card fan, I would be loathe to "use up" my EXTREMELY limited drawing capacity on them. It's starting to sink in exactly how little drawing I can do (a few hours at best) so I want to save it for things like a SPIDER-WHORE drawing I can get 24 pages of comics plus out of.
I'm glad you're here at the end again since I didn't get a chance to answer your question last time. I would LOVE to have you do more CIH? covers, but, given my druthers, I'd really prefer that you do more issues of JACK GRIMM instead. Your call, but...
So, 81 backers pledged $2,013 to help bring this project to life. (Yay us!)

Next time:
"Who wants to see my Alex Raymond impression?"
Dave! NO! We KNOW you CAN'T drive!!!

And as I teased yesterday:
What's in the box?
Good question...
It's a pretty big box. Like four or five inches thick...
OMG! It's a cardboard envelope!
But what's in the Cardboard? WHAT'S IN THE CARDBOARD?!?
My Green Dante/Green Virgil cover print
Neat right?

Ya know what else is neat? This:
Wait for it...
A signed Neal Adams print for Dave.
And since I got one for Dave, I figured I'd be a lamb and get one for Seiler too:
Which I'll mail out to him as soon as I figure out how...
Let's compare the two:
Dante/Virgil is 11 by 17, Neal's is bigger.

The Larry Shell auction (now with fixed link!) I found out what the deal is:
Longtime collector and comics professional, Larry Shell, is having a difficult time right now. Due to his being slightly disabled from two spinal surgeries over the past seven years, he is unable to work and earn a living anymore. This has caused his home of close to 45 years to fall into disrepair and the township he lives in has given him 30 days to make at least some of the repairs or face consequences which could ultimately lead to the house being condemned. It is livable and just needs a lot of exterior work.
To this end, Larry has contacted many of his comic book and strip cartoonist friends to donate a piece of Original Art for an auction to help pay for the repairs, starting with his roof, which has a large hole in it and is leaking into two rooms, one of which is his bedroom! This needs to be dealt with asap!
Among the artists and collectors who have generously donated an original to help Larry are: Neal Adams, Daniel Clowes, Rick Parker, Dave Sim, Michael W. Kaluta, Mark Schultz, Timothy Truman, Butch Guice, Mort Walker Studio, Joseph Michael Linsner, Art Spiegleman, Mark Newgarden, Thomas Yeates, Denis Kitchen, Rick Veitch, Tom Morgan, Mitch O'Connell, Ron Randall, Howard Chaykin, Rich Tommaso and many others!
The auctions are now live on the Heritage Auctions site and end on Sunday July 21st.
You can access the pieces here.

Rerun? Touch Not The Priestess

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

So I was wondering when I had written the first Dave Sim's Notebook column, so I looked and it was over five years ago. In June of 2014 in Hunters & Gatherers we looked at Dave's first notebook. I was going to rerun the column, but guess what I had already done. . .yeah, I reran it already. It looks like it was one of the few reruns. . .perhaps the only one. . .that I've done.

So I looked at the other earlier columns, and found this one from July of 2014. I can't believe I'm doing this for 5 years.

* ~ * ~ *

This week we're looking at issue #83, and in specific, pages 8 to 10 or if you're following along in the phonebook, CHURCH & STATE II page 642 to 644. Dave first sketched out some layouts for page 8 and 9 on page 28 of the notebook and added the punch line from page 9 (though it isn't per verbatim yet):

Notebook 6, page 28

We then skip a head to page 32 of notebook 6 for the dialogue for the pages. The notebook pages between page 28 and page 32 have some dialogue for the earlier pages in the issue, a blank notebook page, and a "Got Live If You Want It Tour '86" poster sketch. Perhaps just unused slogan for the UK Tour that happened in 1986?

Starting at the top of page 32 the dialogue for page 8 goes across for two lines of the Countess' dialogue, and the it goes down to the line at which time Dave starts numbering the bits of Michelle's soliloquy by which panel they appear in. He also crossed off some bits that didn't make the cut.

Notebook 6, page 32

It looks like Dave revised the dialogue at least three times that I can see. The first 'revision' was the addition of the words 'frankly' and 'I mean' in front of two pieces of the Countess' dialogue. Those pieces appear on the finished page just like they do in the notebook.

Then we can see some blue pencil crossing off dialogue and adding new dialogue. For example, the bit labeled '2' was "Of course I never ASKED. I didn't even know who he was until the end of my first year....". Dave crossed off 'Of course' and replaced it with "at the same time." The marked up text is the line that is in the finished art, page 644 of CHURCH & STATE.

There are a couple lines that weren't used "He never explained why I was an exception to the rule" and "The next day he told me that one day a woman would stand against him that her will (?) would ultimately prevail."

Was this unused dialogue from Weisshaupt about the United Feldwar States' defeat to the Cirinist forces? The revolution which happens while Cerebus is on the moon, from which he returns to a Cirinist held Iest. Or was he talking about Michelle, how she was the exception to his male only University? Yet he keeps her in an apartment with a job of which he controls the wages. Even then, she still helped him in the end, giving Cerebus his message.

The SUPER SECRET origins of ATTRACTIVE COUSINS

Benjamin Hobbs:

The Postcard From Hell No. 3 Kickstarter is going on now. A big THANK YOU to everyone who has already backed it! If you haven't backed it, now is the perfect time to do so!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1349357665/cerebus-postcard-from-hell-no-3/updates

Monday, in the Updates section of the Kickstarter, David Birdsong posted an extensive look at the Secret Origins of ATTRACTIVE COUSINS #1 (due out May 2020!)

What he DIDN'T show you, because he didn't know it existed, was the VERY FIRST draft of the cover, which appeared in my sketchbook, sometime in August of 2018:

The text reads:

Title: ATTRACTION COMICS
Super-Cerebus- Super-Cerebus is having a tingling feeling "down there" he's never had before!
Super-Cerebus Girl-It's SO exciting to finally meet my COUSIN!
Bottom Cover Blurb: LOVE in the Grand AV fashion!

At the bottom of the page the word "cousins" appears, possibly indicating that I had sorted out the title by then.  I have no idea why there's a line through the "O" of COUSINS.

The first design for Super-Cerebus Girl, in which she was an aardvark too, was quickly abandoned because the sight gag was too similar to the gag on GIANT SIZE JINGLES #1.

On the next page of my sketchbook is the first two passes at a human Super-Cerebus Girl.  By the second drawing she's in her now-classic Anti-Sexism costume.

Here's the original scan of the proposed cover for ATTRACTIVE COUSINS.

Finally, here's the cover without the images, but with some alternate cover text. There's some rough alternate dialog for Super-Cerebus and Super-Cerebus Girl. Also, I was trying to out-do the GIANT SIZE JINGLES cover with FIVE BIG FIRSTS for Overstreet to take note of... although there are only four BIG FIRSTS listed. That gag was dropped before the rough was sent to Dave.

Next Week: Hopefully you won't be having regrets for having missed the POSTCARD FROM HELL NO. 3.  The Kickstarter campaign ends soon... so hurry over to back it NOW!

Remastered Church and State II is coming...

Hi, Everybody!

Three things:
3: Sean did my post for today! (Everybody: "Thanks Sean!"):

Sean Michael Robinson:

This is just a quick message to let you know that... C & S II is coming!

Yes, the fully-restored Church and State II is at long-last available to order from Diamond Comics, in a special signed-and-numbered edition.

As usual, there are a few things you can help us with! Most pressing at the moment — do you have an idea for what image we should include on the signed bookplate at the front of the book?

Not only are we fielding suggestions, same as last time, we're making this a contest. The winning suggestion (suggested by you, and selected by Dave) will receive... something! Some Cerebus-related restoration goodie that I have hanging around my work space. A "dummy" Church and State I hardback? An unbound C + S I signature? A printed and unbound cover from C + S I or READS or GOING HOME? All of the above? We'll see!

So! Here's the last winner, none other than AMOC's own Benjamin Hobbs!

The book plate will be 3.5" x 5", so your best bet is to suggest something that will reproduce well at that small size!

Please either post your suggestions in the comments or email them to momentofcerebus@gmail.com! We will select a winner by the end of the week. Good luck!

As for the book itself... would you like a little preview?

I also wanted to highlight this comment from yesterday from AMOC regular Tony Dunlop. Thanks for the kind words, Tony, I'm really glad you're enjoying the new Jaka's Story printing!

 Tony Dunlop said...
Off topic - but my remastered "Jaka's Story" arrived Friday, and I had time to look it over yesterday.

Holy Mackerel. Superlatives escape me. I've been longing for years for the definitive, hardcover editions to come out, but this is as close as I'm going to see as long as Dave Sim is alive, and it was worth the wait.

I made it about halfway through the first issue (I can't help thinking of it that way, as that's the only way I'd ever read Cerebus before the remasters began) in an hour or so, as my eye kept drinking in the rich detail. The woodwork. The stone walls. The facial expressions. The sound effects. All of it as crisp and clear as if I were looking at the originals, straight out of Dave and Ger's workshop.

The restoration, the paper, the binding - man, this is a treasure. Take a bow, Sean & whoever else was involved.

Any questions about the books or the restoration in general? Hit me up in the comments!

Thanks again Sean!

Free Stuff! Just for you! (Minimal Restrictions Apply...)

Hi, Everybody!

I was gonna do more Cerebus in Hell reviews, but it's hot (here at Stately Dow Manor,) and I don't wanna sit at the computer and read comics just to write a pithy review.

I know that my "focus" has been a little less "Celebrating Cerebus" and more "Hey, who's got money!" lately.

(Like when I post links to Auctions, like the Larry Shell Auctions Dave has stuff in, that are going on this week.) (Or the latest Postcard From Hell? Kickstarter, which ends Saturday.)

But you guys and gals(?) do come through, like when I posted the link to Mike Battaglia's GoFundMe, and you guys gave him money. (Thank you.)

So, as an apology/Thank You, I've decided to thank each one of you for sticking around and putting up with my crap.

I'm gonna give everybody that is interested a free piece of art.

"DAVE SIM ART?!?" you anxiously ask.

No, my art:

"WOW! That sounds neat as @#$%, how do I get one?" I hope you're asking.

Well, all you got to do is comment "Thanks Matt!" on this post, and send an email to momentofcerebus@gmail.com titled: "I would like free stuff please" and include your name and address. Then I'll draw something, make a certificate of authenticity, and mail it to you in an envelope. Absolutely free. And yes, this offer is open to all you weirdos that live on the bottom of the Earth that somehow manage to not fall off (How do you people DO that?!?) Comment. Email. (Don't forget your address.)

As an added bonus, you'll even learn the "secret" location of the AMOC Cave in the return address.

And now, the Minimal Restrictions that do, unfortunately, Apply:
1: Ya gotta comment: "Thanks Matt!" on this post.
2: Ya gotta email: momentofcerebus@gmail.com with your name and address and title the email: "I would like free stuff please". (If you wanna include any additional information or comments, hey pal I live in a free country, if you wanna pretend you live there too, go nuts.)
3: Ya gotta wait til I'm ready to send it before ya get it, so don't be bugging me about where yer art is. It'll come, it'll come...
4: This offer ends at the end of August 2019. I don't wanna be getting emails in six years demanding Free Stuff.
5: One per customer Jeff...
6: If you wanna get something for somebody else, send THEIR name and address in the email (How'm I gonna know different?)
7: What you get is pretty much predicated on what I wanna draw. Meaning it's RANDOM. So, PLEASE no requests.
8: Unless you're a comics person who wants me to ruin your characters with my "drawings", then go ahead and include a picture of what they look like, so I can screw it up real good.
9: Number Nine. Number Nine. Number Nine. Number Nine. Number Nine. Number Nine. Number Nine. Number Nine. Number Nine.
10: And while you're emailing momentofcerebus@gmail.com, why not send pics of your @#$%ING Flimsy postcards From Hell? ? Most bent to @#$% postcard wins a valuable prize from Dave Sim!

Okay, thanks for reading, see you tomorrow when I post something Cerebus related (For reals this time!)
