Death's Dark Tread

Hi, Everybody!

Well here's an interesting little item:
Coming soon to Heritage Auctions:
As they describe it:
Dave Sim Cerebus #4 Complete 22-Page Story and Cover Re-Creation Original Art Group of 23 (Aardvark-Vanaheim, 1978/2005). All 22 story pages are the original art from the story that first introduced Elrod of Melvinbone! His first appearance, that is. Elrod is a satire, a parody that is, of Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock by way of Warner Brother's Studios own Foghorn Leghorn. The large chicken (the cartoon character, not Elric) was himself a parody of a radio character "Senator Claghorn" from Fred Allen's 1940s radio program. Elrod is proof that "Two wrongs don't make it right". (That boy is about as sharp as a bag o' wet mice.)
The cover is a 2005 re-creation of Sim's original cover produced by Dave Sim himself. This cover is in mixed media on illustration board and signed/dated just above the 9.25" x 13" image area. The 1978 story pages were created in ink and Zipatone over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 10" x 15". They are toned with handling wear.
The cover re-creation is in Excellent condition, and the story pages are in Very Good condition. The cover comes with a letter from Sim as provenance.

All this was Imaged by Heritage Auctions. I trimmed that off the pages. Click for Bigger, like lots bigger. For the detail.

The recreated cover from 2005.

J. Michael Straczynski used to have that last panel posted to his office door.

I put it on a T-Shirt.

Schluk. Schluck. Schluck.

MARGARET LISS:

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Dave Sim’s first notebook used in the production of Cerebus started with notes for Cerebus #20. The 194 pages out of 200 pages scanned covered up through Cerebus #28. We last saw this first albatross just this past January in Captain Cockroach Sketches.

Page 112 of the first notebook made me chuckle. Schluk. Schluck. I can just year it. The pained look on Cerebus face as he lies in bed. It makes me chuckle.

Notebook #1, page 112

The top of the page has some note. “outtakes”? Have we seen the pigeon scene from #21? Skulls from #15.

 Schluk. Schluck. Schluck.

SPEAKING of things you can spend your hard earned money on, I got this feeling that on the NEXT Please Hold For Dave Sim, 5/5/2022, Dave's gonna announce Pieces of Turtles 8 #2 (or 8.2, depends who you ask...). Which might be subject to an INSANE short sale (as we learned in THIS month's Please Hold:)
So, I'ma Fax Dave everybody's questions and concerns so he'll know that The Money thinks a short sale is a bad idea. Or a good idea. Or whatever.

But, we need to have that conversation BEFORE I fax him.

So, for the A/V challenged, Dave's thinking of selling POT8 #2 for TWO hours at CerebusDownloads.com. TWO.

The question to you: THE MONEY, how short is TOO short, and how long is TOO long?

Sound off like ya got a pair?

I do:

"Eggs? EGGS!?!" (I got a signed copy of Batvark: A Poet In The Family for the first person to get that reference...)

Hi, Everybody!

How was your Easter?

I worked. Then I posted about Turtles 8.

John Glismann had an EGGcellent "Iest-er":
As he says:
HAPPY IEST-er !!!
Yeah, this happened.

As he says:
HIGH SOCIETY…
…as an egg. Follow my logic here. While coloring Easter eggs the other day, it occurred to me that if you say “Gerhard” backwards, it (sort of) sounds like “Draw egg.” Thus, I felt that I had to draw his famous cover to High Society... on an egg. Make sense? You may notice that Gerhard is possibly slightly more talented than I am.

And again:
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES # 8…
…but they’re eggs.
