Gene Day's Star Wars

(from Cerebus Bi-Weekly #1, December 1988)
The inside back cover of Cerebus 1 featured an ad for a Star Wars portfolio by Gene Day. When permission to do the portfolio was denied by Lucusfilms, all copies of the portfolio were destroyed except for Gene Day's personal copies which are in the possession of the Gene Day Estate.

Vader looks way wonky in the lightsaber duel pic. Otherwise... top notch black and white art here.

There's something very Gulacyish about his Han Solo face.

What I love about this art, despite the wonky-ness, is that they capture the spirit of a time when Star Wars was still fresh and *raw*. In the context of today's ultra-corporate media, it's easy easy to lose the sense of excitement the Star Wars universe can generate.

Actually some copies got out. I have 11 of them which I picked up around the late 80's/early 90's at Now and Then Books (his old stomping grounds)when looking for Dave Sim ephemera back in the day for around $5 each from some bin. They were numbered and my highest was #228. Still have them.
