High Society 'Bookplate Idea' Competition

Submitted by Paul McKenzie

DAVE SIM:
(from Weekly Update #65, 9 January 2015)
...Oh, and I've decided to do the signing and numbering on bookplates that Bang Printing will be putting in the inside front cover [of the Diamond Signed & Numbered Edition of High Society]. Let's try that GOAT TRICK again and ask for submissions of what people think the book plate should look like. Most Excellent Prize for the one that's chosen...

SEAN MICHAEL ROBINSON:
(from How High Society?, 14 January 2015)
...Although he hasn't explicitly said so, I think it's very unlikely that Dave will want to draw anything new for this, for a variety of reasons. So for those of you interested in participating-- take a tour through your older High Society editions, or the original Cerebus 26-50. What images best represent the book? In what sequence? Feel free to pick and choose from anything available in that time period-- interior art, covers, letter page doodles. If you'd rather not make a mock-up yourself, then leave a text description here as a comment, along with a description of where I can find the art you're referring to. If we get any comments here along those lines, I'll make some mockups of the suggested ideas, and use next week's blog post to share the current contenders...

Submit your bookplate ideas in the 'comments' or email them to: momentofcerebus [at] gmail [dot] com

A drawing of Cerebus smoking a joint. "High" Society. Eh? Eh?

I await my prize...

I think cerebus, Washington wig on, head on the table, bottle in one hand looking miserable as possible, with head shots of Moon Roach, Astoria and Weishaupt above him. The limited space of a book plate would not allow for much more.

Alternatively cerebus same pose sans wig but with Bran, Sophia and Mrs Henrot Gutch hovering over.

Cerebus at the debate doing sketches of rocks and trees with the persons name on his sketch somewhere. Alternatively elrod doing the same thing.

I really like Anthony's marijuana idea.

Nice design Paul! Looking snazzy!

The image posted here is just about perfect; two scenes which "bookend" our anti-hero's adventure in Iest. From "thoughtfully sipping from his fingerbowl" to...well, whatever it is, it's the polar opposite of "thoughtful." From contemplating the possibilities that lie before him to trying to escape the carnage he has created.

While thinking about a book plate idea and I got to thinking I would love to see the Regency as a pop-up book with The Regency Elf giving a tour through the book. Sounds like a new kickstarter project Dave or Ger (hint, hint).

1. An ode to House of Cards- http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140106180212/house-of-cards/images/1/15/House-of-cards-season-2-poster2.jpg - Cerebus dressed up and looking very serious and statesman like sitting in a chair that's too big for him, Regency Elf behind him doing a silly overly-serious face. (or doing the Glamourpuss style tongue sticking-out face).

2. Cerebus standing in the lower corner, looking angrily ashamed, hands coming out of nowhere to point and laugh at him (a recreation of the panel where Cerebus is imagining losing the election).

3. Regency Elf, just floating by looking bored (maybe picking at her fingernails or something like that).

4. 4 panel re-creation of GWB's 'one fingered victory salute' ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0IJkD0znCQ )

5. A Cerebus version of Obama's 'Hope' image- http://www.wehustle.co.uk/components/com_eshop/osx/image/cache/data/upload/POSTER%20OBAMA%20HOPE2-800x800.jpg (I admit that it's a little hacky and obvious at this point, but what the hell, it's apropos)

I like something like what Ethan Burns said: a pic of Cerebus or Elrod signing/drawing the rocks and trees, so it looks like Cerebus is the one who signed the bookplate (which is where Dave's going to be signing it, right?).

The picture here is pretty good, too.
