The Wolveroach Triptych Revisited

The Wolveroach Triptych (2005)
By Dave Sim

DAVE SIM:
(from Following Cerebus #7, February 2006)
A series of three colour-proof reproductions of my ink and watercolour "revisitings" of the covers of Cerebus issues 54, 55 and 56 (which were originally done in black and white with mechanical colour separations back in 1983)... Although most cover recreations attempt to reproduce the original version with pin-point accuracy, I've adopted a slightly different approach of attempting to get a little closer to what I had pictured in my head but which the limits of my ability as well as the constraints of a monthly schedule at the time kept me from achieving...

Hadn't seen these before. Very cool. Would make good bonus prints in a future Cerebus Archive. They come across as a bit more cartoony than the originals, a la Jack Davis or Don Simpson (Megaton Man) and have a bit more movement. I might prefer the originals, but the fresh take is fun.

I second that emotion! Bonus prints 1, 2, and 3 for CANF.

If whomever owns the originals for these would oblige us with a scan, we'd be happy (thrilled) to make them available for bonus prints. As it is, all I have is a digital print of the third one (56). We're trying to make the bonus prints outstanding technically as well as artistically, which means a direct scan from the original, ideally. Sooo... do you own one of these? Want to contribute a scan? Write to cerebusarthunt at gmail dot com.

On the subject of CANF, why not have an artist's/fan's selection of pages instead of remaining glued to the earliest pages of C&SII from the Archive.

I think we saw from the one-offs that were sold in CANT, which were taken from the point of high crisis in the storyline (Bran killing himself and the Giant Stone Thrunk smashing the hotel), there is likely a demand for pages at more interesting points of the story.

Offering more interesting pages might slow or reverse some of the attrition that we have seen in each Cerebus Archive.

I suggest pages 743 to 752 of C&SII. In this 10 page sequence, Cerebus makes Astoria vanish, races to the Canons, blows the Giant Stone Thrunk's legs and head off and forces the crowd to remain still on pain of eternal damnation.

Quite a dramatic sequence, which even Dave has identified as focal to C&S. It's also to my eyes fine visual storytelling.

If for some reason these pages are not available, there are a number of other more interesting sequences to choose from. How about pages 1010 to 1016 where Cerebus jumps out of the window at the trial of Astoria. Or how about an assortment of pages? A Mick & Keith page, a Fred & Ethel (& Henrot) page, a judge page, a Weisshaupt & Michelle page (653), a Roach & Albino page, an Astoria page, etc.

It would be a shame, and probably bad business to simply not use so many good pages.

Holy Slippery Slopes, Reginald! Whose ten favo(u)rite pages would make the cut? I can't imagine a worse, needless headache for the Funkmaster than having to deal with rabid Cerebus fans trying to lobby him to include their personal choices. No, stick with the program. Your pages, if they're in the Archive, will show up sooner or later.

I still like my version of the cover to 55 better...

Aside from some detail in the shading I can't see much of a difference with 54 or 56, but 55's got a completely different facial expression. I guess Dave had a different idea for that one.

*Your* version, Matt?

He reluctantly, but perfunctorily, asked...
