A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.
A quick one this - as my Cerebus collection is packed up for the big move. This week we'll be looking at Dave's notebook #21. We've looked at it once before, back at the start of this year in "Joanne and Fred (not that Fred)". Notebook #21 covers issues #197 to 211. It started out with 200 pages, but only 138 were scanned and there were 17 blank pages, leaving 62 missing pages.
The pages I grabbed from notebook #21 were of Cerebus' call to Aardvark-Vanaheim. Not that Dave picks up the phone any more - it always goes to the answering machine as far as I know. Cerebus tries to make up in his own way, and asks Dave to put him at the Tavern at the wall of T'si.
