On a side note regarding Cerebus eschewing episodic stories as mentioned in the above article: you could argue that since Cerebus inspired the structure of Babylon 5, which in turn has been said to have influenced the structure of TV shows since....that Cerebus defacto inspired the modern TV golden age cultural landscape:).

This mathematical equation based on Wikipedia:

Showrunner Straczynski has claimed that the multi-year story arc, now a feature of most mainstream televised drama, is the lasting legacy of the series. And has acknowledged Cerebus as his inspiration for the structure of Babylon 5. (There is also a Earth Forces Cerebus Station in the show).

I don't see there possibly being any contention on this and so it is hereby decreed and forever remembered in the annals of history: Dave caused the current golden age of tv!!:)

The ol' AMOC Mailbag got some items from David Birdsong.

He says:

Hey Matt,

So I came across a HUGE file of Fantagraphics publications while looking around online for Cerebus bootlegs. I haven't found any in about a year so maybe I've tracked them all down. There is a bootleg of the first four Cerebus In Hell? issues, the mini-series, but not one of issue 0.

Anyway, in the Fantgraphics file is a bunch of complete and incomplete titles including a smattering of Amazing Heroes issues. After looking through them and remembering the early 80s I only found a few things about Cerebus which I will include here.

From Amazing Heroes: The first issue cover with an ad on the back mentioning Cerebus (no big deal, but...).

Oooh, "goopy" Byrne... (I'm not a fan...)

There was a brief mention of Cerebus in a story about funny animal comics, but nothing more that just a mention that it was still going strong after 35 issues. And finally from issue 158 (February 98) is a review of Cerebus 114, a really nice review actually.

And from that same issue about 3D comics is an unfinished version of the AV in 3D cover which I wish was better quality.

They Brought Back Ektachrome

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Way back in September of 2015 we saw some bits from Dave Sim's 26th notebook in They Give Us Those Nice Bright Colors. The notebook, now numbered 29 due to changing the notebooks labeled Albatross to notebook to keep all of the notebooks in sequential order. But I digress. Notebook #29 covers Cerebus #240 through 250 and had the front cover said there was 300 pages in the notebook. It only had 150 pages scanned, had 134 blank pages and the rest were missing.

That entry from September of 2015 showed us some bits of pages #208 and 209 notebook pages where Dave put the issue number and a quick blurb of what the cover looked like. This continues on page 10. Though this time I looked closer at the page. It appears as if the description of the slides used for the cover where written down on another page and then ripped out and glued to the page with the issue #.

Yeah, I don't know how slide #81 turns into the cover for issue 256. In the Cerebus Cover Art Treasury book Gerhard called this slide "Camp Woolner, Kitchener, Ontario". Camp Woolner being the name given to Gerhard's "little cottage".

At the bottom of page 210 is the description of slide #82 which is supposed to be for the cover for issue 257.

Dr. Strangevark

Benjamin Hobbs:

Awhile ago, Laura McFarland and myself discussed the possibility of doing a Dr. Strange parody "Dr. Strangevark: Or How I Learned To Love Something and Stop Something." The two "Somethings" were filler words, because we didn't really have a plot, just the vaguest idea that The Un-Beddable Vark with mystical powers would be HILARIOUS. (All of my CIH? ideas start out as "It would be funny if the Un-Beddable Vark was doing..." Some of them eventually change from that premise.)

This drawing is one of the few things that came of that conversation:

If the comic ever DOES happen, I suspect Dr. Strangevark would look entirely different.

Will there ever be a Dr. Strangevark comic? Only time will tell. Leave a comment below if you DEMAND that there be one.

Hey look at that, F. Paul Wilson is selling his Cerebus #1.

As he says in the auction description:

Cerebus the Aardvark 1 -SIGNED. Shipped with USPS Priority - This is a true #1 (authenticated by Dave Sim himself when he signed it). A few tiny spine creases, upper right corner crease. (see photos) A nice bright copy. Probably in the 7.0-7.5 range. I'm starting the bidding at $100 with no reserve beyond that.

I wish I had the money to bid.

I LOVE the film adaptation of The Keep. So getting F. Paul's personal copy of #1 would be awesome. Alas, I'm broke.
